Angering people doesn't really work well as a political strategy. Good luck with that next year.

Just a drop in the bucket for Bloomberg--he earns more than that a day just on interest alone.

I doubt that the framers of the Constitution had buying your way into political office in mind when they were talking about the "free speech" provisions of the First Amendment.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:23 AM on 05/16/2009

"the framers" are not saints. and the constitution is not the unalterable word of god. I always thought term limits were crude hack on a broken system and I don't like them. That said I really support referendums, and the people decided this issue in 93. They could change it for Bloomberg, if they wanted, but he wouldn't take that chance. Bloomberg as mayor, has been a bland, nonthreatening caretaker who has done nothing, and has no vision, for the long term future of NYC. NY needs somebody else, but there is no one who is ready to step up to the plate.

But why?

After two terms as Mayor of NY with all those problems and so little relative power, why more? Go run a foundation. Go do something useful instead of being a politician. He can't be a Republican any more because Cantor won't have him. He can't run for Pres as a Republican because he can't win any primaries with all those anti-abortion, anti-gay, anti-anything-reasonable nuts controlling the nut house.

So why?

$18.7+ MILLION INVESTMENT FOR RE-ELECTION ?
Makes one wonder how much is being gained in return.
Mayor Bloomberg is a successful businessman for valid reasons.
He understands 'Return-on-Investment (ROI)'.
He is also a POLITICIAN.
I find it hard to believe his motives are entirely altruistic, but one can only hope.
Altruism aside, ROI NOW, or ROI LATER - that is the question.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:17 AM on 05/16/2009

BINGO.

And not one New York "journalist" or Democratic politician, even, dares ask the question about his ROI.

Could be a quest for power. After all, money only gets you so far. After that it's al about the power that money can buy.

Power sure is getting expensive.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:29 AM on 05/16/2009

I agree. I've been asking my NYC neighbors ...

Why does he want this job anyway? Managing homeless shelters, recycing, fire departments.

With all that money, he could be traveling the globe, like Bill Clinton and Bill Gates, shelling out humanitarian money, having fun.

Something doesn't add up.

And that money came from millions of donors across the nation. Bloomy is a billionaire putting his own money in to buy the election. Big difference between beholden th the country and buying yourself power.

If Bernie Madoff had shelled-out this kind of cash for a mayoral campaign, he could have convinced New York that he was Abe Lincoln, too.

Has so much as ONE pundit speculated on why the kind of money Bloomberg spends to be Mayor is WORTH IT to him? Yeah, I know... "civic duty". Yeah. All billionaires got that way out of a sense of altruism.

This whole thing is so loaded. And my fellow New Yorkers will once again prove themselves to be Rubes With Attitude.

P.S. to the Heartland: potholes are not a joke (ask my mechanic).

He already has power (evident by the gobs of money he has and the things he can buy). I think he is after control, which can only be obtained by being powerful. Absolute control to push his own ideology down the throats of others.

I am becoming increasingly concerned that many more people who run for public office tend to be the richest 1%'ers who can put in huge amounts of their own money to win. Bloomberg is a classic example. Real citizens, those of more modest means can't even considering running or to be able to run a decent campign unless they accept money from the rich and do their bidding and ignore the real needs of the masses. Until we look at the 1st Amendment freedom of speech in a different way, to say that money does not buy access, then we will see the richest control us to their and fellow rich people's benefit, not of the masses.
