UPDATE: Extra! talked to Nixon at Sunday's event about her engagement:

We're hoping to do it in New York. We're not going to wait forever, but we're hoping it's just around the corner...Sometime I think before the end of next summer, but we don't have a date."

Nixon showed "Extra" her gorgeous ring but reveals Marinoni is going bling-less. "She did not get a ring. She will have a wedding ring but she does not want an engagement ring."

PREVIOUSLY:
Sunday Cynthia Nixon announced her engagement to longtime partner Christine Marinoni during an Action=Marriage Equality rally in midtown New York to fight for same-sex marriages.

Nixon was joined at the rally not by her fiancee, to whom she became engaged last month, but by her "Sex and the City" costar Kristin Davis, David Hyde Pierce and New York Governor David Paterson.

Below is a photo of Nixon as she shows of her new engagement ring during the rally, and below that Nixon's hand Friday night.

The pair have been dating since 2003. Nixon has a son and a daughter from a previous relationship.

I remember her saying she didn't want to get married when she was with the father of her children.

Seems odd to me.

I guess she found someone that changed her mind.

Having children should change your mind.

Good for Cynthia and Christine, I wish them a lifetime of happiness and excitement. I hope marriage equality is right around the corner for you in New York. I hope you get married on the Intrepid with 1000 bridesmen in sailor suits.

Not true, I hope I get married on the Intrepid with 1000 bridesmen in sailor suits.

Live long, love strong, thanks for standing up.

Paleeze,
I don't care if it is two finches, same sex, whatever. Celebrity engagement or marriage, it has less than the national average of 50/50 of working out.

the more public the relationship, the less likely it will work out.

the more I see this stuff the less I care.

I am bisexual and don't really care what others do.

When you are considered alternative, I am transgender, you soon understand just how fragile your "freedom" is.

Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness extends to everyone, of every color and every sexual orientation. I have made it easier for those who are young and just starting their journey, and hopefully they will do the same as they grow and learn.

The bottom line is, make all the jokes you care to make, but we will NOT be stopped or turned around. We will have the same freedoms as you, come hell or high water.

Congratulations ladies.

Amen. Finally, a spot of cheerful news this week. Best of luck to them.

lol....transgender. You said you are alternative. You can go anywhere, do anything, and say anything in this country. If you were really on a cause you'd be "protesting" in the areas of the world were this alternative (as you put it) lifestyle get's one killed. You are free and accepted in America so stop whining.

it's interesting that the most controversial thing about this article (after reading through poster comments) is not that two women are marrying, but that one of the women does not have a conventional gender expression. B utch women (if that's even how she identifies) are a part of our world. They always have been. And they always will be. As visible members of the LGBT community, they often take the brunt of homophobic comments and actions. Making snide comments about her gender expression is not funny--it's homophobic, disrespectful and superficial.

I commend the huff for keeping this image, and this article on the front page for as long as it did. The "problem" with people who are homophobic - is that they usually don't (think they ) know any gay people. I would love huff to have more news about gay people who are in the news. I think it puts a face and a story to who gay people are and allows people to realize that seeing Cynthia and her girlfriend isn't something to be overly freaked out about; it's a picture of Cynthia and her girlfriend - big deal. Bottom line, people are people - who desire to share love and affection ; in this world - finding that love, weather it comes in a male or female body- is still bottom line - love.

I posted this at Lincoln Mitchell's article too, but thought I would share a post that was forwarded to me by a friend that I think gets it right: marriage should be about love between two committed people, not sexual orientation.

Well written, funny, thought provoking. Enjoy!
