UPDATE: Extra! talked to Nixon at Sunday's event about her engagement:

We're hoping to do it in New York. We're not going to wait forever, but we're hoping it's just around the corner...Sometime I think before the end of next summer, but we don't have a date."

Nixon showed "Extra" her gorgeous ring but reveals Marinoni is going bling-less. "She did not get a ring. She will have a wedding ring but she does not want an engagement ring."

PREVIOUSLY:
Sunday Cynthia Nixon announced her engagement to longtime partner Christine Marinoni during an Action=Marriage Equality rally in midtown New York to fight for same-sex marriages.

Nixon was joined at the rally not by her fiancee, to whom she became engaged last month, but by her "Sex and the City" costar Kristin Davis, David Hyde Pierce and New York Governor David Paterson.

Below is a photo of Nixon as she shows of her new engagement ring during the rally, and below that Nixon's hand Friday night.

The pair have been dating since 2003. Nixon has a son and a daughter from a previous relationship.

All this talk about lesbian stereotypes is very annoying. And I guess it's especially so for me because when I came out at the tender age of 46, I started out dating women who were decidedly... more >>

Pat Robertson is afraid they will now start to molest children and want to have sex with dogs. getting married is the first step, then the children then the dogs, right Pat?

She already has kids, so do you think Pat would prefer to have those kids taken away or just stop her from having new kids (and pets, of course)?

What an actress she is, she made those sex scenes on Sex and the City, look like she enjoyed being with a man.

You know, your comment shows no understanding at all of women's sexuality. Just because she prefers her partner, doesn't mean she is repulsed by men. You have to get some knowledge here!

Truly not just women's sexuality, but human sexuality. Both men and women can be quite fluid in their preferences. It's just that it's more socially acceptable for women.

Chillax! It was a joke. Everyone is being so sickeningly PC here that I felt compelled to be a bit naughty.

Even in the gay world I guess opposites attract. Cynthia is beautiful and polished and yet her significant-other is errrrr well hhhmmm...............NOT. But I'm happy for them and wish them well. Now Cynthia, take her out and get her some nice clothes.

But I wish them the best!

They are both beautiful, just in different ways. We don't all look like the "lesbians" on The L-Word. But that doesn't mean we aren't just as beautiful.

The women on the L-Word are mostly straight. It is a soap opera with beautiful women, beautiful clothes. drama and the rest of the soap opera stuff. It's just hype and high camp.

Yeah, I was kinda thinking the same thing. You say you're gay, yet you're partner looks rather masculine. When I see women like Ellen and Rachel Maddow, off screen in the natural, they are very boyish looking - even dressing more masculine than other women. It for me begs the question for some, not all gays, whether the issue is that they are attracted to the opposite sex, or whether they themselves have tendencies towards the opposite of their sex - i.e., a woman physically, is a man psychologically, and a man physically, is a feminine psychologically. Almost as if a man is trapped in a woman's body and vice versa. . You seem to have 2 types of gay/lesbian - those who favor their own tendencies(I've heard the term - "lipstick lesbians" for example), or those who favor opposite sex ones(like the gay man who walks, talks, and sounds feminine - almost to the point caricature. Seems like 2 different paths to the same attraction to the same sex. A different set of issues with both.

Stop thinking so much. What you're doing is just another type of stereotyping, even if you're doing it without malice.

Just as in the straight world, there are a plethora of "types." And a plethora of preferences. And you can not have seen or experienced the true diversity of the lesbian community if you think there are just "two types."

Most definitely. There were two rally's yesterday--one equal marriage rights for all and the other marriage for staights only. It's all coming to a head in NYS and people announcing weddings is all part of the process for equal marriage rights for everybody.

Wow, what a cold thing to say. People can't help how they were born. And stupid: if Christine were standing with a man you'd have no problem at all identifying her as female.

I am a democrat, and unlike the myth the GOP puts out, all democrats are not pro-abortion, in fact I am anti-abortion, anti-death penalty since being for one and against the other seems hypocritical to me, but that being said, I am not of the view anyone has the right to tell a woman not to have a abortion, even though my religious beliefs tell me the woman is destine for gods condemnation for getting a abortion, I also believe in separation of state and religion, therefore a womans free choice will be between her and god, same with gay marriage, its a abomination before god, biblically, but again that being said being not a advocate for gay marriage feel its a moral, religious issue and god gave man and woman freedom of choice to sin or not, who am I to act as god and tell them I have the right to say no to their free choice, therefore any law prohibiting them from marrying is contrary to my view of gods freedom he gave every man/woman! And as a twice divorced man, father of two sons, whom I am very proud of, and love dearly, feel let the gay folks get married and enjoy marital bliss if they can, as to whether their sin, again that is between them and god! And also let them to enjoy the miseries of divorce, alimony, child support if they adopt of cocieve via artifical means!

Good coment leatherneck, thank you. But every time a Christian says "Gay" and "abomination" in the same sentence, I have to ask; what's your take on pork and lobster? Seriously, because God is VERY clear that eating those are also abominations. If you do enjoy thos dietary items and others like cheesburgers, how do you justify ignoring Gods timeless word?
No disrespect, sincere question.

Try to remember not everyone is a christian. Try not to project your religion onto others and you'll be happier and so will they.

God knows it is difficult enough to find the right person for you (still looking...), so it is always a joy if you hear or read about two persons, regardless their sex, who have found their true love.

I wish them both joy, happiness and the right to marry!

Well, not to split semantic hairs, but I think she ids as bisexual. I'm not sure.

As for the not-knowing part, perhaps - she's been out about her relationship with Mariononi for years. :-)

I think you may be. It's been in all the tabloids for years. People magazine has featured them and even believe she's been on talk shows talking about her relationship with Christine. At that time it was a big deal since Cynthia was recently divorced from her husband Danny at that time.

Statistically, many women middle aged and older are seeing the "other side" in themselves and are developing loving relationships with other women. This is not a new phenomenon just becoming more obvious as gay relationships are now more mainstream. As a psychologist. I've been seeing this for years.
