WASHINGTON -- Members of Congress have been told in confidential briefings that Pakistan is rapidly adding to its nuclear arsenal even while racked by insurgency, raising questions on Capitol Hill about whether billions of dollars in proposed military aid might be diverted to Pakistan's nuclear program.

Why is pakistan doing so?
1) To exhert more pressure on USA and milk billions of more $$
2) To prevent takeover of nuclear sites by surprise commando raids by spreading it to different locations
3) To tilt some balance to match India with unconventional method

Who could encourage pakistan to do this, and who could pump in billions to pakistanis even
if the USA dry up all the aid by proving them material goods, instead of money?

ITS CHINA
clearly China has strategic and geo-political interest in this.
Reasons:
1) Keep USA mired in problems, to china can siletly grow itself into a unchallengable military power
2) Keep India encircled so that there is no one to challenge or balance chinas overwhelming military growth, because only India can be a huge road block to china, if India were relatively free of these issues.

So from backgroud, with massive convergence of interests between pakistan and china and china covertly backing pakistan.

CHINA does not give a damn about world peace, it is only concerned about its own interest.
So if you want to deal with pakistan, best way is to first close the link between china and pakistan, both economic and military. This will ensure the goals to denuke or protect pakistans nuke from falling into wrong hands.

If situation worsens, there will be a day when pakistan might give multiple wounds to India, before it is cleansed off the world map.

US should just give india the location of all of Pakistan's nuclear weapons and a few hundred cruise missles, problem solved

Yeah, nuclear war. That is an intelligent solution.

I used to think most people were intelligent and well meaning.

My time on the internet has disabused me of that notion.

cruise missles aren't necessarily nuclear tipped, i'm talking conventional ordanance to destroy the nuke sites before they can launch

I have to wonder if this isn't more about the US securing Pakistan's nuclear arsenal and tamping down the production of nuclear materials to US satisfaction than guarding against any feasible threat to Pakistan's arsenal from the Taliban; there just isn't much evidence to support the MSM panic attitude.

And the overall tone of it smacks of NeoCon spin-doctoring, but in an effort to accomplish what exactly I'm not quite clear on--more military-driven world domination madness, I suspect....

As someone from India, I am in full support of the US gaining full control of Pakistan's nuclear weapons. Remeber this is the country that has invaded India on four seperate occiasions and is allied with another enemy of India, China, which invaded in 1965

The USA will never gain control of Pakistan's nuclear weapons.

Because Pakistan HAS nuclear weapons.

I'm sure you do, but the question would then be...who should get control of India's arsenal? Given the history between Pakistan and India, it would be foolish of me not to assume there is a built-in bias to your POV....

Its going to be very interesting to see how Pakistan is going to nuke the Taliban.

Probably a smart move for them

There seems to be a lot of Americans who want to invade their country

Pakistan: BushCo's biggest mistake.

Why 100 nukes?

Won't 2 do it?

Ask that exact same question of the US, Israel, the UK, France, China, Russia and India.

True.

So military planners think 100 nukes is the minimum deterrent?

Both the US and Pakistan governments are to blame for the massive displacement of Pakistanis. The Taliban should have been rooted out long ago when they were less entrenched and had fewer numbers. Now there will be more social and economic instability in Pakistan, and more poverty, a sure-fire way of gaining recruits for the Taleban. The US is so stupid. All we do is pump money into poor countries with the hope of a Democratic success. Much of the time, we don't know where the money ends up. Then Congress will authorize more money. What a cycle of failure! Accountability seems to be incidental. You can put any positive spin on it as you wish. Pakistan is an unstable country politically and economically, and although the Taliban are few in apparent numbers, they are very focused are can creeate great instability in the future. Loyalty within government ranks is suspect.

As Juan Cole said on Bill Moyers: The Taliban are about 5000 in Pakistan. The Pakistan military is 550,000. The threat is WAY overblown.

Exactly - AND most of the Pakistanis can't stand the Taliban. Women are relatively politically powerful in Pakistan - compared to other predominantly Muslim nations - and women detest the Taliban.

And India is building it's military for a war with Pakistan. And there is no longer a nuclear non-proliferation treaty. Bush pulled the U.S. out and that was the end of it. Many said his actions would result in a new nuclear arms race but Bush didn't listen, ever!!!

And since both sides have nuclear weapons the possibility of war has decreased tremendously.

If it wasn't for the Nukes India would have invaded in 2001 or 2002.

So no matter what your opinion of nuclear weapons might be (and I think they are the spawn of Satan) it is a factt that both sides possessing them has already prevented war in some of the most densely populated places on earth.
