Mountaintop Mining

thedailygreen.com:

Just stop and consider this: Across Appalachia, companies are blowing entire mountaintops to smithereens to get at the thin coal seams below. The communities of the region are paying the cost in their health, their culture and their natural heritage.

I'm sure a lot of you have already signed petitions and looked up the following websites but to those who are too lazy to do anything I say: Get active or kiss it all good-bye!

I fervently hope Lisa Jackson will reconsider . . . this is abominable.

That's right fvck up the mountains, the valleys, the rivers, and streams... just so the coalmen can save a few bucks. I've had it with centrists.

This is really bad. Obama should know giving these permits, or any of them, for mountain top removal is bad. This is enormous destruction.

He is becoming very disappointing, and will have a very hard time getting strong re-election support from a lot of Democrats, progressives, and even Republicans. Those republicans who bit their tongues and crossed out to vote for him will have an easy time going back.

Also, this report should be back on the front page.

We must have, like 50 thousand mountaintops, so if we blow off a few to get power and light, that is a good thing. Most mountaintops just sit there, no one sees them and no one cares about them. Do you think they blow them up for fun? No...they blow them up to provide power and light so you can get your abortions in a clean situation. People living near these so-called mountaintops are pretty already albino and they read poorly, and they should have moved long ago, see B Hillbiilies for further details. Out.

Give me a break. How many of you have been on a mountaintop? We don't need no mountaintops. Get real, we rule. I want my toys, and I do not care about a mountaintop. Go live in a cave, worship the mountaintop, leaf me alone.

I've never been on a glacier - does that mean what happens to the glaciers doesn't affect me? If you were trying to be sarcastic (which I SINCERELY hope you were), you really need to work on that...

Sounded to me like the article was inconclusive about whether the permits will be issued, there is still another phase of the process. That said, it's a bummer that they don't just stop MTR all together. Lump it in with the fallacy of "clean coal": http://www.dasolar.com/alternative-energy/clean-coal

Another Friday night release. More permits given at once then under Bush.

Underground mining is more dangerous but hires more workers and is less destructive to the environment and people. In the long run , moutain top removal is worse for the country and even the people of those areas. It also provides for less jobs.

Change we can believe in ! I wonder if they considered they true impact of this.

The educated OB man just had his Nobel Chu man strip the Department of Energy of all of its funding for hydrogen fuel cell development projects: http://fuelcellsworks.com/news/2009/05/10/proposal-to-cut-doe-hydrogen-and-fuel-cell-vehicle-programs-must-be-reconsidered/ .

Now the OB man will scorch the landscape to back up his brilliant CLEAN COAL concept.

And all the while, the corporate controlled media will bury this and nary show a picture of this environmental degradation.

Add to this the dedicated pipelines pulling DIRTY OIL out of the Alberta tarsands which yields massive production pollution and large lakes of tailing pond pollutants just to feed the glutenous American energy consumers, the OB man does not represent change!

If this is really true, it's the end of hope.
