John Roberts

New Yorker:

When John G. Roberts, Jr., emerges from behind the red curtains and takes his place in the middle of the Supreme Court bench, he usually wears a pair of reading glasses, which he peers over to see the lawyers arguing before him. It's an old-fashioned look for the Chief Justice of the United States, who is fifty-four, but, even with the glasses, there's no mistaking that Roberts is the youngest person on the Court. (John Paul Stevens, the senior Associate Justice, who sits to Roberts's right, is thirty-five years older.) Roberts's face is unlined, his shoulders are broad and athletic, and only a few wisps of gray hair mark him as changed in any way from the judge

lhe's the same guy as limbaugh and cheney and hannity and... or, as tom cruise said in ‘the firm': THEY'RE ALL THE SAME GUY. hasn't scalia and the high tech lynching guy with the curly hair on his pop can voted the same as roberts? These people stole the election for a rat in 2000. it shouldn't be hard to deduce that they are working for something other than the u.s. constitution. i don’t know if it's saudi arabia or china or the new world order but i do know its not America.

I think that liberals are afraid of loosing any type of grip on the SC due to Souter retiring. This is why all the Robert's bashing is going on. Sounds like sour grapes to me.

The whole Supreme court should be fired and sent home and we should abolish it. Right or left - this is nothing but a political group.

This and Alito are the faces of ACTIVIST judges.
Do not allow the GOP to pretend activism in judges means liberal. The most activist judges we have had are the Right wing conservative judges.

One could say the same thing about the left leaning justices (Souter, Gingsberg, et al)

No more win.gnu.tts; attitudes and values of the 1600's are not in style again.

We've had enough of those to last us a lifetime.

Roberts does seem polite, even charming. At the joint session, I noticed that Roberts greeted Obama warmly compared to Alito, who was unable to mask his discomfort. But behind a charming veneer, is an unwavering conservative who was trying to dismantle civil rights legislation in 1980, a mere 15 years after passage in 1965. Because I have some years, I see now that 15 years is not a long time, but in 1980 it seemed as if that were long enough. So, it is no surprise that the Roberts court overturned Brown v Board two years ago, because 50 years is long enough, I guess. But Brown (1954) overturned Plessy (1896), which ushered in legalized racism for six decades. In other words, Supreme Court decisions matter. Plessy was a step backwards towards slavery; the Roberts court took one step back towards Plessy. Oh dear. But racism is dead, right? So is sexism. Everything is fine. No need to worry.

Obama and Roberts are like Gemini, the Twins, except one leans left and the other right. Obama's pick for the Supreme Court will firmly establish, in my mind, who Obama is. Obama backwards, Amabo, is Latin for "I shall love"; well, I don't love Obama, but I hope that I will.

All the more reason to seat liberal judges. This man makes his decisions based on politics, not good law.

When even our Supreme Court justices have become a part of the corportocracy it's time for a Revolution in America.

When banks get free money from the government (at taxpayer expense) and lend it back to credit card holders at 20+%, It's time for a Revolution in America.

When GM gets a bailout while planning to further outsource parts and vehicle manufacture to countries besides America, it's time for a Revolution.

When war criminals who engaged in an illegal, unprovoked war of aggression (Bush, Cheney, Condi) go unprosecuted, it's time for a revolution in America.

When billions of dollars are wasted on earmarks and taxpayers CANT EVEN GET AN ACCOUNTING of all of the money spent, it's time for a revolution in America.

When millions of homeowners are being foreclosed upon while the financial institutions that CAUSED the market collapse get financial bailouts, it's TIME for a revolution in America.

When the financial geniuses who GAMBLED, not invested, but GAMBLED on derivatives and CDS's go unprosecuted, (and meanwhile a financial crusader is prosecuted for having sex with a hooker) it's Time for a Revolution in America.

It's time for a Revolution in America, folks. Quit whining, quit bitching, quit blogging, and lets get rid of the crooks, criminals, and corporations ruining this country.

Good question. I don't think pitchforks or a guillotine would work.

I guess it's got to start with grass roots, not re-electing a single incumbent.

I don't know how we get good, honest, non-rich or powerful folks to run, people who CARE about the rest and not just rich contributors.

I think it's going to take protests in Washington DC of 5 million or more, the unemployed, the foreclosed, and the rest of those who are suffering while the rich get richer.

maybe you have some ideas. You seem to be a compassionate sort.
