MANILA, Philippines — Alec Baldwin's joke about getting a Filipino mail-order bride provoked a sharp response in the Philippines, with one senator saying Monday that the "30 Rock" star faces violence if he ever visits.

Baldwin, 51, who is divorced with a teenage daughter, said in a May 12 interview on "The Late Show" with David Letterman that he would love to have more children.

The Emmy-winning actor quipped that he was "thinking about getting a Filipino mail-order bride at this point ... or a Russian one."

Baldwin has been involved in a bitter dispute with his ex-wife, Oscar-winning actress Kim Basinger, over custody of their 13-year-old daughter, Ireland.

Philippine Sen. Ramon Revilla said Monday that Baldwin's comment was "insensitive and uncalled for" and an insult to millions of Filipinos.

He called the actor "arrogant" and said he is apparently unaware that the Philippines has a law against mail-order brides.

"Let him try to come here in the Philippines and he'll see mayhem," Revilla said, using a local idiom that implies the speaker will personally administer a beating.

The senator is a former action-movie star who occasionally still appears on Philippine TV.

They like to blame their colonizers, Spain and the US for their malaise and yet they're proud of their Catholic heritage even if it prevents them from practicing effective artificial family planning that cause their population to boom and their people to look employment in other countries

I used to watch Ramon Revilla movies when I was a kid and he was the least imposing action actor of that era -- Alec Baldwin could probably kill Revilla just by tripping and landing on him.

Well, at least we now now that humorless pseudomalists are not ALL privy to an amyrican passport.

And talking about insensitivity: I am right now looking at an ad for finding my filipino match today right under this box.

Ok, that has nothing to do with Alec Baldwin, but it sure made MY day :o).

Have you been to the Philippines lately? These politicians DO NOT take care of their country, they have not provided the basic women's rights, animal rights, environmental policies to protect their people. I am Pinay and I have seen first hand what these corrupt policiticans have NOT done to the country over the past decade. It is widely known what Pilipino women will do almost anything to come to America (my cousin is one of them), so it's not too far fetched that any woman in poverty there would be glad to be a mail-order-bride. Get over yourself Senator and start taking care of your constituents and provide better opportunities for your people before you start acting like you're Manny Pacquiao...at least PacMan has invested millions in General Santos City....What have you done to make your province better? Anyway, it was a joke...

Stop being so sensitive and it was a joke Sen. Ramon Revilla and this tells your sense of humor is DRY. But in reality, made mail to order bride is really happening in the Philippines in which the government is unaware of it. For instance, since the BAN for nurses to get a working visa or sponsorship coming to US due to the scandal a few years ago triggered other women to marry in order to flee the country. So what's the harm for having a dose of what's going on? Life is not perfect as we often desire. It's our country FLAW. Maybe you should do something about it.

Here's a copy of my emai to Senator Legarda, another Senator who demands an apology from Alec Baldwin:

Dear Senator Legarda:

As a Filipino living in the States, I was offended by your demand of apology from Alec Baldwin. Mr. Baldwin was "clearly" joking and you don't have to be a rocket scientist or a cryptographer to know that his joke about Mail Order Filipina bride meant no harm nor insult towards Filipino women.

With all due respect, why do many filipino politicians display such thin skins when some foreign celebrity/politician makes reference about the Philippines in a humurous yet innocent gesture? While these same politicians also display such "thick skins" in their corruptness?

Where are your priorities, Senator? How could you possibly spare some of your time demanding an apology from an actor when our country has so much problems and illnesses?

IMail Order bride is not a form of prostitution, however, if you still think it is, I must say that elected government officials in the philippines are a bunch of whores and prostitutes. The only difference is they don't sell their bodies; they only sell their souls through the expense of the Filipino Taxpayers.

Don't make the Filipinos look humorless, Senator. You do not represent us. Just do your job, please

Respectfully,

Renel C.

San Francisco, CA

Huh -- Alec’s joke was really wrong. It doesn't matter if the politicians are riding on it, what was wrong was the joke that meant for a group of women who could be a victim of this disgusting business owned by most of Americans themselves even though they also have the regulations on this. On the other hand, the Philippine government should try their best to prevent and discourage this business.

Whatever kind of remarks you uttered is your own accountability. To say you are sorry or declare your apology is an act of honour and later in your life you will receive respect from people instead of disgust. Think about it.

Check the true to life movie -TRADE (2007). The victims, yes the victims are mostly from the poorer countries of Latin America, Asia and even Europe. Human trafficking or the issue of Modern Slavery is NOT a joke and must not be a joke. Women and children are mostly the victims here not to mention that IN THIS country – USA, human trafficking is already an industry.

the problem with the Philippines is-- they love to blame everyone else for their malaise except themselves for placing themselves in that situation.

goodness! they still mostly blame Spain & America for colonising them..

If you really thought about it you would realize and perhaps become compassionate about the extreme poverty that many Filipinos face - poverty like you have never seen before but nonetheless is rather common in countries like the Philippines. You might also recognize that when faced with such poverty, many will do whatever they can to better their situation. There are many ways they can do that. For centuries, individuals have married in order to better their situation, from royalty to the very poorest of the poor.

If you took the time to read any literature that speaks of those who colonized the Philippines, from Spain to the United States, you would also note that while they brought many improvements to the Philippines, they also brought destruction. Again, no one is at fault. It is just what happens during colonization.

Sexy Rexy.

Applying your logic and to borrow your words of "wisdom," could one then argue that "the problem with BLACK people is they love to blame everyone else for their malaise except themselves for placing themselves in that situation. Goodness: they still mostly blame Whites and America for enslaving them."

i hardly doubt it. For everyone's loud rants about tolerance and racial harmony now that Obama is president, there seems to be a whole lot of xenophobic sentiments expressed here.

Senator Revilla is an embarassment to the Filipino people. We Filipinos do have a sense of humor, and the likes of Senator Revilla should not reflect upon the majority of Filipinos. Just like Michelle Bachman, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, et al do not represent the majority of americans. There are idiotic nincompoops all over.

I think Filipinas deserve respect and compassion. They really bear the cross for their families, and are willing to sacrifice their own happiness out of devotion to their parents and siblings. They can take the jokes at their expense because they are people of quality and recognize what is truly important and what isn't.

Preposterous!

99% of Filipinas are screeching nags (Hi, Mom!) and those who aren't must be autistic.

Maybe he is, I don't a opinion about him in that regard. But AB had the right to say what he said. It's that whole "freedom of speech" thing we have here in America...the one ReTHUGs try denying to others unless of course, you're saying only what they want you to say or only what they agree with.
