Are there boundaries to declaring the next "American Idol" champ early? Apparently, nothing can contain the likes of Adam Lambert _ not even a difficult new ballad co-written by Kara DioGuardi.

Simon Cowell all but crowned the California glam rocker the winner of Tuesday night's final performance show over Kris Allen, the acoustic guitar player who struggled mightily to stay in tune on "No Boundaries," co-written by the fourth "Idol" judge.

Lambert had no such trouble with the upper-register pop ballad, and Cowell said he genuinely believed the show had found a true star in the 27-year-old theater actor.

The judges were visibly deflated following Allen's version of "No Boundaries" _ each was noncommittal, choosing to sound as if saying farewell to the 23-year-old heartthrob from Conway, Ark., rather than criticize his less-than-pitch-perfect performance.

"You have thoroughly, thoroughly deserved to be standing on this stage tonight," Cowell told Allen, who wore a slightly pained expression, as if he realized he'd missed the mark on that song.

Allen, a college student who has worked as a worship leader at his hometown church, told host Ryan Seacrest that he and Lambert aimed to forget competition and put on a good show. Still, that didn't keep Lambert from bringing his A-game, making Allen pale in comparison.

The two performed three songs apiece: a favorite past performance from this season; a tune selected by "Idol" creator Simon Fuller; and last but not least, DioGuardi's "No Boundaries."

For his first song, Lambert sang one of his greatest "Idol" hits, wearing a long, dark coat during the brooding arrangement of "Mad World" featured in the cult movie "Donnie Darko." While generally well-received, Cowell declared his goth getup to be too much, and a more conservatively dressed Allen followed up strong, reprising his rendition of "Ain't No Sunshine" on piano.

Cowell unequivocally declared Allen the "winner" of the first round.

"When your name was announced last week, I wasn't sure that America had made the right choice," Cowell said. "I absolutely take all that back now after that performance."

But Lambert easily bounced back for Round Two. He replaced his gloomy frock with a suit and tie for the second round of the sing-off and performed the Sam Cooke classic "A Change Is Gonna Come." The effect was soulful and propulsive, flaunting Lambert's vocal range and theatrical delivery.

"That was the best I've ever heard you sing _ ever!" crowed Paula Abdul.

Next up, Allen turned to his trusty guitar for the Marvin Gaye tune "What's Going On."

Cowell dismissed the interpretation as lightweight, saying it sounded like "three friends in their bedroom strumming along to Marvin Gaye. ... I thought it was too laid-back for a night like this." He then gave Round Two to Lambert.

Both singers had rough spots in the swelling ballad co-written by DioGuardi, but where Lambert capably rose to the high notes, Allen failed and fell flat; it was clear from the look on his face that he knew he'd been beaten.

Though Cowell made no declaration of a winner for the final round, it was clear from the entire panel's concessionary remarks that they knew it, too.

But this is "American Idol," and America decides.

The winner will be named on Wednesday night's final results show.

I loved Adam,I think that I will never watch Idol again ,and I have been a fan since day one.I watched as folks crowned the likes of Taylor Hicks ,voted down Daughtry ,but this year was the last straw.I dont understand ,either America is tone deaf,or the thing is rigged.Adam was light years ahead of the others.I heard talk of him screaming and facial contortions.Apparently these folks never watched any rock music, certainly not kiss or Ozzy .They were unable to judge anything not country sounding. What hurt Adam I fear was his flair his sexuality .I see many similarities to the comments made about Adam and the comments that many of the old folks made re Elvis when he first came on the musi scene .The same type of folks are now making the same kinds of comments ,as they did about Elvis .I guess that this means Adam is going to see a phenomenal success. That in itself will be payback for all those who think he is just to flashy or to different .His beautiful voice will show them ,and then they will realize that they were just like the old folks back in Elvis day.

Actually, it may have worked better for Adam Lambert that he didn't get stuck with an AI contract. It's apparent to me that everyone in the music business knows that Adam is the IT Boy. There is tremendous buzz about who he'll sign with. A lot of the speculation goes with Queen. For those who don't, know being compared to Freddie Mercury is a monumentally, huge compliment. Freddie Mercury is considered one of the greatest vocalist in music history.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddie_Mercury#Singer

I guarantee any band that is looking for a front man with the pipes and the performance are looking at Adam. Slash and Queen might duke it out. Adam Lambert has a tremendous upper register for a fellow with his testicles still intact. Of course, the Christian Right's efforts against Adam gave Kris the victory, but will they buy his records? However, it should do nothing to impede Adam's career.

I felt for Kris when Randy criticized him for singing the Marvin Gaye song that SIMON FULLER PICKED FOR HIM. Geez! What was he supposed to do? Turn it into a rock opera? Then, Simon acted as if it was an exact replica of Marvin Gaye's version - I thought it had a much more fun beat to it. In any case, either could win as they are so different. Both are talented and I wish Adam and Kris well!

The good thing about the competition this year is that millions of people are getting exposed to the type of talent involved in the professional musical world. Adam is a fine performer in that genre but without the visual theatrics, I am not sure how memorable he is.

Gokey is a better singer than Kris. Period.

And Adam is miles ahead of both of them.

That song they were forced to sing, UGH. That is a terrible song. No other way to describe it.

I always wish that Adam will not come to the end of a song. I want to hear him keep singing. I haven't felt this way since Jane Olivor.

Unlike Kelly Clarkson I don't see Adam's voice on top 40 radio. It's too dare I say it...theatrical!! I could be wrong though

I don't agree, I hear Freddie Mercury and Queen on the radio all the time and who was more theatrical than him??? Bohemian Rhapsody is practically an opera in itself. Although I do think seeing him in person is the best, he's the most charismatic American Idol contestant ever, I don't think he'll win, he's too good and too far ahead of the people who vote on that show, but it doesn't matter, he'll be the success story.

Here's a video comparing Kelly's and Adam's voices and range - they both hit em up there!

I agree.

Adam is the male-KD Lang-gone-Las-Vegas.

He'll probably be a great entertainer, long-term, but his audience will be those who love over-the-top Broadway.

That's one big audience, but it's not everyone.

He could have won Eurovision.

But he'll never be rock and roll, or R&B.

I think the judges swayed the public y praising Adam and pretty much saying goodbye and goodluck to Chriss, they should watch how they speek, people value there oppions and are swayed by there take on a performance Heres a great review and recap of the Idol finale, next year I hope that only 3 judges will share there so called knowlege mand leave the judging up to the publics vote.http://movies09.com/american-idol-recap-adam-lambert-vs-kris-allen.php

If a person is so ill-informed that they're unable to make their own decisions, but they still feel qualified to vote (go figure) then maybe having music business experts as "judges" can help them make an informed decision - as opposed to an emotional one.

I really doubt most people are swayed by the judges tho.

A NOTE to arsphidius - not all people who have an opinion are Americans, sometimes tolerance is preferable to constructive criticism.

Last year Simon Cowell pretty well trashed David Cook and praised David Archuletta. I thought Archuletta should have won but I thought David Cook's vocals were a lot better than Simon gave him credit. for At the beginning of the finale results show Simon apologized to Cook, saying that he had listened again and that David's performance was better than he gave him credit for. Basically he acted like it was a toss up between the Davids. The thing I didn't know about until yesterday, was dialidol. It predicted that Cook would win by a massive amount of votes. I think Simon knew and didn't want to appear foolish. I don't have that problem, I still think Archuletta should have won.

http://www.dialidol.com/

In AI Season, Cowell did a similar about face with Katherine McPhee. When McPhee sang I Have Nothing, Cowell trashed her and said that she should have never attempted the Whitney Houston song, I thought Cowell was crazy. To my ears, McPhee's rendition was the closest thing to perfect outside of Whitney herself. At the beginning of the results, show he apologized to McPhee - the first time he had ever apologized to a contestant. He said that he had listen to the recording again, Now I wonder if he didn't access dialidol info.

Adam is nothing to get excited about. He cannot hold a note, that is why the screaming and the theatrics. Supposed style over substance.

Kris should win.

If Adam does win, I would like to see him invite his boyfriend up and give him a kiss onstage.
Take that, America!

Kris will have a great musical career ahead of him whether he wins or loses; Adam will be forgotten in a year, unless he lands a gig in Vegas, which is where he belongs.

Kris is the height of mediocrity, a dime a dozen, he makes me fall asleep. He will go the route of the other wrongly voted winners, there are quite a few of them. Adam will be around after I'm gone.

OMG, Adam held some of those notes incredibly long. It kinda shows the constraints of a 2 minute time limit.

You must be a very immature individual if you feel that the only way to praise someone (in your case Kris) is to smear someone else (in your case Adam).

They both sing very well. Where's the hate coming from?

I watched Idol for the first time this year last night. As an "Idol Junkie" previous seasons I decided this year I did not have the hours to devote to a tv show. Damn DVR's and the season pass! It is plain and clear that Adam Lambert will be the winner. Now I am bummed I didn't watch the whole season. What a talent.
