I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Wired has a fascinating article detailing some of the revolutionary advancements in high-speed cameras. The article details a new show called "Time Warp," "whose premise is to make the ordinary extraordinary with one trick: slowing it down." The high-speed cameras used for this are incredibly expensive, costing more than $100,000, but they can stretch a few seconds of action into several minutes, allowing us to see details within the action that were previously unknown to us.

Wired has several great videos illustrating this powerful technology, including a video utilizing the high-speed camera underwater to capture beautiful images of a surfer riding a powerful wave. That video is below, but be sure to check out the rest of them here.

Great, great, now all we need is a copy of "Dark Side of the Moon," a coupla lasers and some blunts.

If I had the guts to get into those waves, I certainly wouldn't have the guts to bring a $100,000 camera in with me. That, potentially, gives a new meaning to wipe-out!

The "money shot" at the end is one of the more generic surf shots out there, its only distinguishing feature being that its shot in slow motion. The problem is that slow motion cameras aren't new, and they've been put to much better use in the past. Planet Earth puts this to shame, for example.

"The article details a new show called "Time Warp,""

I think you meant to say the article ADVERTISES a new show called "Time Warp". Let's cut the BS.

Does anyone else think the name Dylan Longbottom was both utterly ridiculous and hilarious at the same time?

Plenty of good "in the tube" movies out there. See Greorge Greenoughs vintage classic "Crystal Voyager" with Pink Floyd soundtrack. Also newer, "My Eyes Won't Dry 1+2"

Exactly right, George Greenough invented in the wave and behind the wave photography in the early 1970's. Prior to that he had also invented using fins on surfboards during the 1960's. People don't realize that they have seen his photography over the years in multiple Hollywood films and TV shows.

We have the power to slow down our lives and see more. But, sadly, in our hurry-up world we choose not to. We need to remember the the immortal words of the philosopher Yogi Berra: "You can observe a lot just by watching."

Expensive? The old studio color cameras back in the 70's cost about $140,000 each. Those stadium long distance zoom cameras about $220,000 each. And that was back in the 70's. Those shots were cool, but I've seen a lot better. Sorry to be a Grinch.
