LOS ANGELES — Kris Allen's smooth vocals and boy-next-door image propelled him to "American Idol" victory Wednesday, turning the theatrical powerhouse Adam Lambert into the most unlikely of also-rans.

"I'm sorry, I don't even know what to feel right now. This is crazy," said a stunned Allen, 23, of Conway, Ark.

As host Ryan Seacrest said in announcing the result of the viewer vote, "The underdog, the dark horse, comes back and wins the nation over."

Lambert's commanding vocal range and stage presence _ and the judges' adoration of him _ at times turned "Idol" into "The Adam Lambert Show," with the other contestants mere guests. But it turned out that "Idol" viewers could embrace a gifted performer like Lambert, one who sported black nail polish and bold self-assurance, only to a point.

Simon Cowell tipped his hat to both contestants Wednesday.

"To both of you, and I don't normally mean this, I thought you were both brilliant. .... The future's all yours," the judge said.

Before the results were announced, Lambert and Allen had a moment of musical camaraderie: They joined together with Queen on the rock anthem "We Are the Champions."

"Adam did win. So did Kris. Nobody lost tonight. These are two champions," said Paul Stanley from Kiss backstage.

The comments from Cowell and Stanley aren't necessarily empty platitudes. Past contestants can testify that losing the title doesn't mean you're a loser, nor does winning mean you're a shoo-in for superstardom.

Chris Daughtry and Jennifer Hudson, who finished fourth and seventh in their respective seasons, have gone on to huge success. As for "Idol" winners, they range from blockbuster artists like Carrie Underwood to the mostly under-the-radar Taylor Hicks.

Wednesday's outcome echoed last year's contest, which looked like it was going the other way. Cowell all but crowned David Archuleta after the performance finale, calling his a "knockout performance" _ but the victory went to David Cook.

Lambert was such a powerful, unique performer that his fans were allowed a sense of entitlement on his behalf. But his triumph wasn't inevitable. When Allen and Lambert were declared the finalists last week, just 1 million viewer votes separated the pair out of 88 million cast.

Allen bloomed during the season, gaining more assurance onstage and winning viewers over with his heartfelt vocals, modest demeanor and well-scrubbed good looks. He also scored big with his singer-songwriter arrangement of the Kanye West song "Heartless," subbing sharp, syncopated guitar playing and crisp vocals for the original's autotune voice and electronic beats.

There was also the Danny Gokey factor. Gokey made it to the top three before he fell out of the contest, leaving his supporters up for grabs.

"After the third one leaves, you wonder where do the votes go from that third contestant," Paula Abdul said backstage after Tuesday's singing showdown.

Allen seemed the likely candidate for those viewers' affections, for on- and offstage reasons. Allen and Gokey, 29, of Milwaukee, were downright conservative when compared to Lambert's elaborate staging and off-the-wall wardrobe choices. Allen is a married college student and has worked as a church worship leader. Gokey, a widower, is a church music director.

Lambert, 27, of Los Angeles, brought measured rock flashiness _ daring, not freaky _ with songs including "Whole Lotta Love," the first-ever Led Zeppelin tune on "Idol." He's largely kept his personal life under wraps, saying "I know who I am" when asked.

Earlier this week, Allen said he hoped the outcome wouldn't be decided by "having the Christian vote."

"I hope it has to do with your talent and the performance that you give and the package that you have. It's not about religion and all that kind of stuff," he said.

Added Lambert: "It's about music. That's really important to keep in mind."

Allen rose to the occasion during Tuesday's performance show, especially with his soulful version of "Ain't No Sunshine." But he was tripped up by "No Boundaries," an upper-register belting ballad co-written by judge Kara DioGuardi that was ill-suited to his voice.

Lambert did a better job with "No Boundaries" and excelled on his reprise of "Mad World" and on "A Change is Gonna Come."

"That was the best I've ever heard you sing _ ever!" exclaimed Abdul.

The finale Wednesday included the usual bag of tricks for extending the show to two hours. There were group numbers, the Golden Idol Award _ semifinalist funnyman Nick "Norman Gentle" Mitchell among the contenders _ and celebrity-contestant combos.

Allen was joined by Keith Urban on "Kiss a Girl," while Lambert stomped the stage in elevator boots and oversized ribbed shoulder pads for a pyrotechnic performance with Kiss. The female finalists, including Allison Iraheta, opened up for Fergie, who sang "Big Girls Don't Cry" and then was joined by her group, the Black Eyed Peas.

Iraheta later dueted with Cyndi Lauper on "Time After Time" and Danny Gokey joined Lionel Richie for two tunes.

Rod Stewart sang "Maggie May" after the male finalists opened for him with "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy."

An offbeat guest was Steve Martin, the actor-comedian and fine banjo player in his own right. He played his song "Pretty Flowers" with finalists Megan Joy and Michael Sarver on vocals.

Asked by Seacrest to guess who might win "American Idol," Martin replied: "I know it's a long shot, but I'm hoping I do."

After making this post at AI, my profile was suspended and the post was deleted.
The post was made originally at a Clay Aiken site by someone who was given this information by a student at KA's school in AR.

38 million votes came from Arkansas. ONE state cast 38% of the total votes. Hmmm. Here's how it happened...

Hundreds of pre-paid AT&T cell phones were given out by organized KA supporters with West Coast area codes to vote long after the lines were closed in their time zone. They were able to text hundreds of times faster than it takes to dial in. It's actually possible to text vote approximately 40 times within one minute using a new smart phones, 2,400 per hour. Multiply that by the extra 2 hours for the west coast phones and you get 14,000 votes possible by one individual. Once the voting officially ended in Arkansas, the phones with the west coast area codes were used for the remaining 2 hours.

I have a AT&T land line and I was able to vote for Adam only about 25 times within 4 hours because of constant busy signals. Meanwhile someone in Arkansas had voted over 500 times that amount using power texting. You only need about 1,500 people to accomplish the amount of power text votes Kris received. If you remove the organizers from the equation, the number becomes the more realistic 60% - 40% margin that was originally predicted in Adam's favor.

Thanks for posting this! As I've commented for years now, I'd LOVE to see an analysis of the "Idol" voting patterns. I don't know how to investigate it, but I'm sure someone lurking about on HuffPo does. It would be an interesting academic exercise, with more than a little significance. I know that it's just a TV entertainment contest, but there are undoubtedly some useful underlying principles, if not for politics, at least for marketing. I heard two young ladies (teens, I think, not tweens) who told about how they power-texted (for Kris) through the whole voting period . I've also suspected, since the time that "Idol" became a multimillion dollar opportunity, that organized, perhaps paid, voting would be inevitable. I also think that anything that FOX doesn't explicitly outlaw is "fair", but it would be useful and interesting for the public to know what's behind the vote totals. For example (for anyone who hasn't watched from the beginning) we know that programmatic phone voting was used in season one to keep one of the lesser talents in the mix over another extremely talented woman. FOX put the technology in place to block this, but I think the same thing is probably going on now with texting.

Never let it be said that people in Arkansas don't know how to utilize technology. It looks like they Out-Foxed FOX.

You can BET the info regarding the voting is kept under lock and key - we'll never know what happened. You can't even get it thru the FOFA - as AT&T is a privately held company (regardless of they fact that they're so willing to spy on us for the govt.).

AI will NEVER limit the calls to one call per ph#/IP - they make too much $$ in kickbacks from AT&T. So they really have no incentive to correct this situation - or even care.

Too bad AI suspended your profile/username - I wonder if they blocked your IP from creating a new one.

I am sure that all the homophobe anty gay religious zealots voted for Chris in spite of Adam.
They would do anything, not only to hate, but to destroy creativity and talent.

The interpretation of Kara DioGuardi s song by Chris was simply embarrassing to watch and stood no chance to Adam's skills.

Ultimately we will see what happens with CD Sales. For sure, this is the last season I watched. Adam Lambert's theatrical energy was star-like but genuine. Big pop and rock star need that energy. It was entertainment all around.

Adam, you are also humble and kind not just talented. Thank you for making me enjoy my last season.

Adam's no prince and Kris's no frog. They deserved & earned what is theirs... They are great talents in their own. Adam's charisma & potentials as a star is displayed impressionably in his flamboyant style. While Kris's talents is sophisticatedly reflected in his taste for music, every song he sings comes with a Kris's stamp on it.
Their first attempts at "No boundaries" didn't live up to expectations, but when Kris sung his version it was crystal clear who is the owner of that song. That song in my opinion written to Adam's advantage didn't do both of them justice. But Kris managed to induced momentous elements into such dragful song & somehow make it sound "inspiring". Which was 'supposedly' all AI champ song should be.
If Kris is the so called "anywhere can find" vocal, Adam shouldn't be exempted. There are more rockers out there whose screams like Adam & even better, than that of Kris's category.
I'm not a fan, I loved Adam but now I see why Kris won becos he is determined to draw your attention. Slowly but surely. I say again, Kris was the Dark horse and he will be a Golden horse in long run.
Adam will have fame but Kris will flourish.
Adam is Iconic, Kris is Heroic.
Adam deserves attention, Kris deserves the title.
Adam is the funky rock star... Kris IS your American Idol.

Honestly, neither on of those boys could sing that well. America was fascinated with Adam Lambert because he plays the role of the "theatrical gay" very well. Americans love it when minorities play to their stereotypes. But you notice when it was time to pick the winner they did not take him seriously.

From Old Europe ...

Americans are never so vexed as when irritable Brits give them gall. With George III (or George 3 as Hollywood says) it meant revolution; with Simon Cowell, it's just as revolting ... they chose the outsider over the "chosen one". Adam, no one likes Mr Smarty Pants. But Chris ... you're just boring! No doubt you'll end up singing Country and Western.

Someone tell me when there's a show about musicians. Until then, I still don't care. 99% good music is underground, made by authentic and creative people who often produce their own work. Once in a while the cream rises, but not often enough anymore. All because of drivel like this. Clarkson is a minor exception.

Redneck Rage!

They're still bitter about "a colored" in the White House, so they stayed up all night on the phone making sure we know they're still in charge when it comes to singers with "family values."

You are so full of it.

There was a backlash against the obvious bias of the judges and the producers.

Adam sounded like he's going to work with Queen on the Fox interview below. I believe the offer that he is talking about, which Adam will take I believe, is to front Queen only for the 46664 Charity Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in New York later this summer. He could also star in their popular stage musical WWRY which is slated to hit Broadway after becoming so popular in other countries. But that's the extent of it. He'll want to go on his own and make his own name.

I suppose in between, in may be a good idea to rotate with other celeb singers and tour with Queen on some dates since he'll gain worldwide attention from all the stadiums they play and sell out, and at the same time raise money for the Mercury AIDS Charity Trust.

Adam is contractually obligated to the 2009 American Idol Tour from July 5 thru Sept 15. Don't ever kid yourself that 19E would EVER let him out of that - even for one night - the audience would riot! Unless the charity concert is scheduled for a night the tour has off, and there aren't many, Adam won't be there.

I also don't think Adam will be doing Broadway anytime soon, not even for Queen.

He may front for Queen on a few tour dates, but he's already gained worldwide attention. He's already the World Idol! Adam needs to get into the studio and release a CD - so he'll have some material out there on which to base his OWN concert tour!

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --
“American Idol” alum Clay Aiken is apparently no fan of this season’s runner-up, Adam Lambert, or the current state of the FOX reality competition.
The singer slammed “Idol” and the rocker on the subscription-only message board of his Web site on Thursday.
According to Gawker, who posted a screen shot of Clay’s blog post – which he charges fans $29.95 annually to access – the singer said he’s happy about how the competition ended.
“Now that it’s all over, and for the record…. I couldn’t be happier about the way AI ended this year. I only turn the show on once a season, and only to see what the set looks like each year,” Clay wrote. “This year, I happened to turn it during the minute that Adam Lambert was singing ‘Ring of Fire’ and, at that moment, thought my ears would bleed. Contrived, awful, and slightly frightening!”

I like Kris but Adam clearly is the superior talent and deserved to win. And, Kris knows it more than anyone. I'm still bummed about it but a talent like Adam will not be stopped. What an amazing and exciting performer, mastering every style he attempted! Seems like a very nice guy, too, as does Kris. Too bad Adam was just too overwhelming for AI viewers.

Kris is a good enough singer but it will remain to be seen if he has any "star" power. His interviews are a little boring. The most telling part is the day after the finale, when Comcast had a news feed of pics of the show and guess whose picture they had next to it. NOT Kris'. Yes, it was Adams. Adam is way more interesting and exciting. He sells. A woman on MSNBC said "it looks like Americans are not ready to for someone wearing guyliner". Wrong! The VOTERS of American Idol aren't ready for guyliner and they are not all of America. I bet if you did a poll the majority of AI voters would consider themselves Christian. There are a LOT more people (like me) that watch the show but do not vote. I would not buy a Kris Allen album but am looking forward to seeing what Adam does and will buy his album if it is good. I think it is best Adam didn't win because he got tons of exposure and in the # 2 spot, he now has more autonomy and won't be stuck in the Idol machine. Adam has a bright future. Kris-we'll see.

wideawakenow said: "I bet if you did a poll the majority of AI voters would consider themselves Christian."

And, *I* bet if you did a poll the majority of AMERICANS would consider themselves Christian.

You started out so well, I was really hoping you wouldn't go there. Can we stop with the Christian factor PLEASE! I'm SO tired of it! 1) not all people who identify as Christians (or any other religion) are homophobes; 2) not all homophobes are Christian; 3) the group you actually INTEND when you say "Christian" are the anti-gay fundamentalists, and even the evangelicals - but not all fundamentalists are Christian; 4) it's highly unlikey that ANY anti-gay religious group's votes had much bearing on the outcome - you're giving them WAY too much CREDIT... and power!

Discounting the phobes as irrelevant, who voted for Kris? Cute, sexy, demonstrably straight, non-threatening Kris. Kris who all those little 10 to 13 year old pre-pubescent, and 13 to 16 year old raging hormone girls all think they are falling in love with and stand a chance with a cute guy who sings like every other guy on the radio.

oops - too long - continued below:

To all these tweens Adam was cute, but scarey - older, leather, black nails, earrings, maybe gay... he didn't look the the guys they know, but Kris was a guy they could LOVE!

As SOON as the show was over all those dillusional tweens, sat in their bedrooms power-texting on their cell phones while they hit redial on their private landlines while they listened to the studio versions of all of Kris' songs they'd downloaded to their iPods.

There were 27 million viewers for the Final 2 Performance show, but most viewers don't vote. If 1/4 to 1/3 of them voted, thats 6-8 million voters. If each of them voted an average of 12-16 times - you could come up with a number just under 100 million votes. (And we KNOW lots of ppl voted hundreds of times!)

So, counting anti-gay groups, Dialidol.com, votefortheworst.com and the people who just couldn't get into Adam's "screeching" (heh) - you could easily contemplate 5 or 6 mlllion tweens out there power-voting for Kris. All while the rockers, the music purists, and the nostalgic boomers were voting a few times for their smouldering Adam.

It's all good. Remember - they both have a place in the biz - just different places.
