JERUSALEM — Media focus on the idea of a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict, favored by President Barack Obama, is "childish and stupid," said an aide to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Wednesday.

The aide's statement reflected efforts by Netanyahu to deflect attention away from the issue during his just-completed trip to Washington. The Prime Minister clashed with both Obama and members of Congress in his attempts to avoid discussing the peace process in favor of Iran.

President Barack Obama made it clear that the U.S. backs creation of a Palestinian state, but Netanyahu has not endorsed the concept.

During his trip to Washington, Netanyahu constantly tried to shift emphasis from Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking toward the threat posed by Iran's nuclear program. He and Obama publicly disagreed about the relative weight of the two issues. Netanyahu argued that reining in Iran would spur peace efforts, while Obama felt that progress toward peace between Israel and the Palestinians would undermine extremist elements, including Iran.

In a brief statement at Israel's airport on his return, Netanyahu again began with Iran, mentioning the Palestinian issue as third on his list.

Israel's Yedioth Achronoth reported that Netanyahu was similarly at odds with legislators.

"A senior Israeli official who was present at the meetings defined them as 'a fight' and 'mutual arm-wrestling,' with Netanyahu trying to put an emphasis on the Iranian issue, and the members of Congress insisting on returning to the issue of the settlements. The senior official emphasized that there was full coordination between President Obama and the members of the Democratic majority in Congress. Netanyahu discovered yesterday how much Congress had changed, the senior official said. In 1996, Netanyahu recruited the Republican majority that existed in Congress against Clinton, the Democratic president. Today, this is impossible."

M.J. Rosenberg of the Israel Policy Forum wrote that it was "the first time in memory" that "an Israeli prime minister went up to the Hill only to be bombarded with criticism."

Referring to his talks with Obama, Netanyahu said, "There was an agreement that we need to immediately begin the peace process, I said I am willing to open peace talks with the Palestinians, by the way with the Syrians as well, of course without preconditions, but I made it clear that in any peace agreement there must be a solution to Israel's special security needs."

He also said that Arab nations should be brought into the peacemaking process, "meaning not only does Israel need to contribute and the Palestinians contribute, but Arab states need to make concrete contributions already at the beginning of the process."

Netanyahu did not mention talks with Syria during his appearances in Washington. Israel's previous government held several rounds of proximity talks with Syrian officials, mediated by Turkey, but no results were disclosed.

In his airport statement, Netanyahu said he and Obama agreed that Iran must not obtain nuclear weapons, and attempts to solve the problem through negotiations could not be unlimited in time. "There was also an understanding that Israel preserves the right to defend itself," Netanyahu said.

Israel has not taken the military option off the table and analysts say it might have the ability to strike some of Iran's nuclear facilities.

Israel considers Iran a strategic threat because of its nuclear program, long-range missiles and references by its president to the destruction of the Jewish state.

It appears that we are still left with the uncomfortable situation of Netanyahu and his cabinet of "yahoos" who treat the United States as the family dog treats it's tail; he wags it.

Who exactly running the show here? Certainly NOT Israel. America starts writing, calling your senators and representatives to let them know that they put American interest first and foremost. Israel is not the 51st state. They are a welfare state. It's time for them to know their place in the world.

It is clear you have no idea about the dynamics of the US-Israeli relationship. We are not a 51st state. We are the best partner the US has in the region.

Partner? - I don't think so - the relationship is more like paying alimony to an ex-wife. She does what she pleases and you still pay and pay and pay without any of the benefits of being married ( I'm sure there are benefits, I just can't think of any at this time).

We continue to give Israel money - large amounts each and every year - more than we give Egypt (please don't bring up that canard again) and the Israeli government does what it pleases with regard to Iran, the Palestinians, the illegal settlements, etc.

If Israel is the best partner we can have in the Middle East, I vote we do without friends like that - that way, at least, we would know that the USS Liberty was attacked by a belligerent country that periodically spies on us and sells our national secrets to other countries like the former Soviet Union for its own ends.

It is time that the U.S takes leadership in its own affair. Israel government by lobbying with AIPAC are controlling the policies of the U.S that is going to threaten the U.S. For example, the involvement of U.S against Iraq has something to do with Israel. So, the economy affecting the U.S which no one is talking about, is the Iraq war contributed this. Israel government wants again to get the U.S involved against Iran. If Israel attacks Iran, U.S is going to be involved anyways that means there is going to be war from every front and let us not forget the increase of terrorism in the world against Israel and the U.S. Unless the only way to contain this is by silencing Iran when it retaliates with destroy Iran with nuclear that it has no power to fight back (just like Japan but more extreme attack). If America refuses against Israel government's wishes, to be involved then, Obama will be in danger even in terms of his life. That is why every president when elected has to concede to Israel government's wishes otherwise they don't get elected. It is easy however to convince Congress towards Israel government's policies one, because most are pro Israel, two, Congress sway where the wind blows as long as they have comfort. This thing should be taken seriously.

What "special security needs" does Israel have that any other country doesn't
have?

Hello!! Has it occurred to anyone that Iran may feel threatened by Israel? After all they have over 200 Nuclear Warheads. Why are they not forced to abandon that arsenal? would this not be a legitimate reason for Iran to withdraw from the NPT? Where are the truth seekers?

"Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said he called President George W. Bush to argue for an abstention from the U.S., a key Israel ally at the United Nations.

"I said: 'Get me President Bush on the phone,'" Olmert said in a speech in the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon. "They said he was in the middle of giving a speech in Philadelphia. I said I didn't care: 'I need to talk to him now.' He got off the podium and spoke to me."

"[Rice] was left pretty embarrassed," Olmert said."

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer, regardless how much fear-mongering goes on over Iran's "threat" to the global community, Iran is not comprised of a nation of extremists, there is a substantial population of moderate Iranians and Israelis in the region, why is it that this president is wrong in your opinion for seeking to perserve and grow the existing moderation in that region before lauching a preemptive strike out of fear of a potential action by a soveriegn nation. I preemptive strike agaisnt Iran is what Adadenijad is hoping for in order to build actual consensus for a full scale military response after the 1st Israeli strike, they will retaliate on Israel if they strike first. Think about it, Iran is a signee on the NNPA, they have taken the legal steps to develop nuclear energy (not weapons), Israel has weapons and hasn't signed anything, Iran has the political cover to retaliate in my opinion, and likely in the opinions of Iranians if Israel strikes them for pursuing their legal right to develop this energy source. Moderation is our only true ally agaisnt terrorism, every other target is a distraction, the only military solution to terrorism is another "Final Solution"

We are not Israel's backup military for whatever preemptive strategy they would like to pursue. Those days are over where Israel can take a backdoor into the Oval office and dictate American foriegn policy. That is our right as a Nation, have we learned nothing.

Netanyahu unaccustomed to being challenged by US Presidents was not prepared for this encounter. No one, except perhaps right wing Islamic Fascist’s wants to sea all Jews drowned in the Mediterranean to amuse the Mullahs, but lets face facts, Israel hasn't got a leg to stand on,but either do the Palastenians, when it comes to sincerity when negotiating. They just don't have "I'm filling my pockets" Arafat to push around anymore. Obama may achieve some form of lasting, frankly I can't call it peace, but something, cease fire maybe, but beyond that a number of generations have to die out, and that is going to take some time.

Israel will never accept a two states until the U.S. stops mollycoddling them.

One of the biggest mistakes of the 20th century was the creation of the State of Israel, and the U.S. has compounded it by allowing them to do as they please for 50 years. It's high time we hold Israel to the same standards as we do other nations.

Bibi was a disaster for Israel the last time around, and he will be a disaster again. We need to cut them loose. If they want to keep on sticking their fingers in the eyes of their neighbors, then let them reap the consequences of their actions. Every time we have come close to helping them get a peace agreement, the Israelis have insisted on impossible conditions, and then pointed their fingers at the Palestinians as the culprits in blowing up the agreement. Meanwhile, they keep on settling into territory that is not theirs,That cuts off Palestinians from their source of making a living, and whining when they get a violent reaction.

Not only is it wonderful that we have a president who is willing to take on a hard core far right ideology in Israel as represented by Netanyahu. It is further wonderful and astonishing that we finally have a congress that is willing to stand up to that ideology as well. Have I died and gone to heaven?? For those of us who have waited for this for decades - you have our back - our support. Do not retreat or go weak. You are on the side of the angels and by the way all those in Israel and the Palestinian territories who desire a normal life and peace!!!! YEAH!!!!!

Israel is an independent nation and has the right to determine their own fate....but that means that we must do the same.

If Israel still wants us to give them a bunch of money from the government and tax-deductible contributions permitted by citizens, and still wants us to veto everything about them in the Security Council, then they have to take our policies into their plans.

If they want to go rogue cowboy, then the United States should announce that we must be pro-American and do what is best for us, and that if Israel's actions conflict with that or they attack then our promises to protect them are for when they are attacked and we shall feel free to permit them to take their own way.

All Jews and victims of the Holocaust could have come to the United States, Canada, and other free nations and lived in peace and harmony and without fear after the horrific events of WW II. They could have prospered, lived in peace, practiced their religion and been free. In taking the position where they had to have a homeland in Palestine they have just placed themselves and their loved ones in a position where they have known nothing but war and danger for three generations.
