I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Whoopi Glenn Beck

Glenn Beck went on "The View" today. It did NOT go well.

Nevertheless, it was DELIGHTFUL, by God. In the clip below, watch as Barbara Walters and Whoopi Goldberg pin Beck down for lying on the radio about an encounter they all had on the train to the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Beck is forced, at first, to walk back his "mischaracterization" of the encounter. But then, things go ZOMGY as Goldberg calls him a "LYING SACK OF DOG MESS," which is hilarious. Then Walters freaks out on him for claiming to be a reporter and yet not bothering to check his facts. And really, it just gets even more bonkers from there. Honestly, if you were to take a drink every time Beck comes off as totally disingenuous, you will require a new liver by the end of the segment. DO NOT DO THIS, OBVIOUSLY.

[WATCH.]

In the second segment, the discussion gets itself partially back on the rails, but only in that the show's hosts are no longer venting their aggravation with Beck telling falsehoods about their train encounter. Beck talks about how he hates everyone in Congress and how everyone should resign. But then Beck gets stumped by a question from Barbara: "What are your real convictions?"

His answer: "I believe in God. I believe in the founding of this country. I believe George Washington, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson were geniuses."

So there you have it. Glenn Beck really, really believes in God, the names of some Presidents, and that the United States was founded, somehow, at some point in the past.

UPDATE: Via Media Monitor Teri McCarthy, here's the second part, which goes okay until Walters starts asking Beck for his convictions:

Story continues below

ANOTHER UPDATE: Glenn is TERRIBLE upset at the terrible way the View ambushed him, like they were his Fox colleague, Bill O'Reilly or something!

Glenn knew this wasn't going to be pretty -- but his interview with the ladies on The View was even worse than anticipated, mostly because they wasted an entire segment on accusations that Glenn 'lied' about who said hello to who first on his Amtrak train ride with Barbara and Whoopi to the Correspondents dinner in Washington DC. The saddest part is that not only did they waste an entire segment on a completely insignificant, petty, humorless and incidental point - Glenn had already clarified the point the day before! Tune in to Fox News tonight at 5pm for Glenn's first response to the 'liar liar pants on fire' ambush interview by the ladies on The View.

A LAST UPDATE: Glenn Beck called into his own show today to respond to the way he was treated on The View - something he could have done whilst actually on the show while it was happening but didn't, I guess. This is called "pulling a Jim Cramer."

Watch:

BECK: Judge, you listen to my radio show. I tell stories. I tell about experiences of my life and everything else, and I told the story about riding on the train with the two ladies of The View, and apparently I was a liar because I said that -- which is true, that she -- Barbara Walters said hello to me. Instead, it was I said hello to Barbara Walters. I walked up to her -- I guess that's what we need to spend our time on for 7 minutes.

As usual, Beck is being disingenuous by reducing the whole encounter to a dispute over who said hello to who first. In actuality, the "story" Beck told was about how: 1) Goldberg and Walters reserved seats on Amtrak, the subtext being that they were acting like some sort of celebrity divas, 2) implied that Walters was unpleasant in her conversation by affecting a mocking and exaggerated imitation of her voice, and 3) implied that it was Beck's great influence and magnetism that caused the View ladies to approach him and seek his attention, when in actuality, it was the reverse.

Beck took leave of his show thusly:

BECK: What kind of person would go on national radio and say he introduced himself or they introduced themselves to him when, indeed, the truth, your honor, is that he introduced himself to them?

NAPOLITANO: Oh, boy. are you going to be back tomorrow, big guy?

BECK: I'm going to hang up the phone, take a little more Nyquil so I can rest medicine.

The answer to your first question is "a lying sack of dog mess." Enjoy getting bombed on Nyquil, though!

ANOTHER UPDATE: Glenn Beck complained and complained and complained that Whoopi Goldberg and Barbara Walters had got a seat on Amtrak reserved. This aspect of the story wasn't of much concern to me. But it mattered to Beck, greatly. As it turns out, this great mystery has been penetrated: at the request of ABC News, Amtrak held seats for Goldberg and Walters.

What remains an extant concern is of course, Beck's depiction of his encounter with Goldberg and Walters. Why did Beck go on the radio and distort the encounter, making it seem like the pleasant exchange that all parties had was unpleasant? Why did he go out of his way to make it seem like the View hosts were "acting like some sort of celebrity divas?" Why did he feel the need to ruthlessly mock Walters, adopting a mocking imitation, and portraying her as some sort of harridan? The two View hosts clearly believed that they had had a cordial conversation, and were obviously very taken aback at the way Beck described their conversation to his radio listeners. And when confronted on the View, Beck's first instinct -- the correct one -- was to apologize.

Beck needs to clear this matter up, because it sure makes him look like a lying sack of dog mess!

Couldn't even watch that juvenile, high school level drivel. All of them, just drivel.

Because Beck will read these comments on this board (yes he IS that vain) and he will know how the public viewed his lies, pettiness and that his radio show is nothing more than telling people what they WANT to hear (faux news fanatics), the facts be da m ned...because HE is not stooping to 'check his facts' ...HE is not a journalist. (his words).

Beck made the ridiculous claim that he has "24-hour swine flu". What he should have said is that he is the swine who has the flu. Beck's playing for the sympathy vote. Master manipulator.

Illness has a psycho-emotional component. The immune system is readily weakened by emotionally stressful situations. Being caught in a balled-face lie (mis-characterization according to Beck) is more than the fragile ego of this pompous blow-hard can endure. Being a coward at heart, it is far better to be sick than honestly face the public with consequences of his actions. The mind is a powerful thing.

In his weak non-response to and obfuscation of the question Walters asked about his convictions, Beck revealed for all to see that he is the emperor who has no clothes. He believes in God and in the genius of George Washington, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson. That's it? Beck has to know that he should have come up with a better answer than that!

Shame and humiliation are a powerfully debilitating emotions. What little conscience Beck has is doing a number on him. As well it should. His only push-back is to demand an apology of Walters and Goldberg. All he is doing is fitfully trying to regain his sense of lost power. What an a**!

I do not know if Glenn Beck was ill or not, or if he was playing for the sympathy "vote". ("Vote"?)

What I do know is that Illness does not necessarily have a psycho-emotional component. My nephew was born with an incurable illness that is painful and leads to an early death. He was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when he was an infant. This was not a cause of a weakened immune system due to an emotionally stressful situation. It was genetically inherited. That is a fact and it is indisputable.

You say that illness is a choice because you are unable to face the consequences of your actions and it is far better to be sick than honest, as if that is a truth. Why would anyone even entertain the thought of such. With the millions of people with varieties of debilating illnesses, with predisposition and genetic inheritance, or even those who are mildly ill, from exposure to virus or bacteria; putting the blame of illness as a consequence of actions is blaming the victim. The generalization you made, not only is incorrect, it reveals a lack of compassion.

The mind is a powerful thing. With such power comes the responsibility of using it in a way that would elevate others.

Whatever it is that you have issues with Glenn Beck about, do not project on people with illness, your skewed ideas of "a psycho-emotional component" in which they bear responsibility for their afflictions.

I mis-stated the first sentence of my second paragraph. The word that I failed to include was most, as in "Most illness has a psycho-emotional component." That was my oversight.

Setting aside for a moment my personal distaste for Beck, what I spoke to was the power of our emotions (suppressed, unacknowledged emotions) to make us ill. I speak from my own personal experience and with reference to the science of psychoneuroimmunology. The books of Dr. Candace Pert (and many others) contain insightful information on the mind-body connection. These works (at least the ones I refer to) have nothing to do with blaming anyone for their illness. I am not into blame.

And though I am late in my response, and am speaking primarily to the ether, I still feel compelled to say to the rest of your response to my comment I certainly empathize with the pain you must feel regarding your nephew's illness, but please do not presume to tell me what to say. We are free to speak our own truth, regardless of whether others agree with it or care to hear it. I would also invite you to recognize that you are doing as much if not more projecting than what you are accusing me of.

As for your nephew, I extend my compassion and heartfelt expression for his improved health and well-being.

And he calls into his show sound sick when he really was tearing up from getting a call from the ballbusters at Faux noise who probably trashed him for not be able to spin his way out of the lies he told - Job done Beck...Job done.

Had she stuck her little whiney voice into this to defend Beck, that would have been the final straw with Barbara for Elizabeth. You do not take up for someone who so vividly lied about your boss, on air, if one wants to continue working for that someone. It doesn't matter whether one works on TV or at McDonald's.

Walters put her hand in front of EH's mouth at one point. EH would have dominated the conversation, if the others had let her. She certainly tried to.

Not at all. He admitted on the View that he "misspoke" on his show. Now he's saying he didn't. He told a story, loosely based on facts, about people he knew he was going to be facing on national TV, he got called on it, he got his a** whipped, and now he's whining like the little wuss he is.

The answer to the questions, "why would glenn lie about something so trivial?" is simple, create controversy. Barbara gave his motives away without realizing it when she made the statement "this incident happened after glenn was booked". Glenn knew full well what he was doing when he made up the fake story about the train.

You're right, every word was completely true. That's why Whoopi and Barbara called him out on it, because it was an exact account of what happened.
