Growing up in a black, Pentecostal family in Cleveland, Alysa Stanton never imagined the day when she would be preparing to be ordained as a Jewish rabbi.
But that day will come June 6 for the single mother who will be ordained by the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, becoming the first African-American female rabbi in the world.

It's not a Jewish tribe, per se, genius. Judaism has long been a proselytizing religion just like Christianity, converting people around and stuff. It's not true that all Jews are from 12 tribes that come straight from Abraham but I guess you could grab as much just by reading the article hereby.

She is not the first, or even second, African American Rabbi.

I was Bar Mitzvah'd in a synagogue that had been a church and is a church again today.

And, btw, there have been black rabbis since time immemorial in Ethiopia and there are hundreds if not thousands of black Jews from American and Caribbean families like Reuben Greenberg who was the the police chief of Greensboro.
It should not and frankly does not matter except to a very narrow stretch of totally PC people.

I don't think in 2009, hearing firsts like this is cute. It's just sad. It shows how small minded our country is, progressing based on other's time table.

Seriously? The first African-American president preceded the first African-American rabbi? Wow.
There have been quite a few black male rabbis--there was a major black Jewish movement in Harlem in the 30's and 40's, and black Jews can be found all over the country. She's the first woman. Which is still awesome, and a little sad.
