NEW YORK — Michael Moore's documentary about the economic crisis will hit theaters on Oct. 2.

The announcement was made Thursday by Overture Films and Paramount Vantage.

The film is not yet titled. Moore earlier planned to make it more broadly about America as an empire. Instead, the documentary explores the causes of the global economic meltdown. Moore has called it "the biggest swindle in American history."

The division between rich and poor is old territory for Moore, who broke through 20 years ago with "Roger & Me" _ about General Motors closing a plant in his hometown of Flint.

Moore won the Academy Award for best documentary in 2003 for "Bowling for Columbine."

Michael Moore is good at creating awareness. He is not a hero. But he is also not a bad documentary film maker. For all the Moore haters commenting.. you dont know jack about docs. Not all info-seekers are going to understand Paul Krugman, guys like Michael Moore are the lefts version of Fox News, which is very needed, to target the layman audience and keep them from being tricked into voting republican. Who cares if its dumbed down, it has to be when competing with the right.

The "there" wasn't there, that's what killed the economy. Derivatives as a financial instrument that more and more bankers were using was a complete fraud, and the fact that Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan thought derivatives were "sound" when others were warning him proves that elitism leads to ignorance. Andrea Mitchell and MSNBC should be ashamed of themselves for her reporting and anything financial crisis. Conflict of interest? No duh.

Oh yeah, and Bush's tax cuts for the rich? The income gap between the wealthy and middle class has widened ever more since. The rich didn't use that extra $ as capital that would ultimately provide jobs, they pocketed that sh*t for themselves.

Hoover thought that the rich would pull this country out of the depression. They didn't. What made republicans think that the rich would do it again??

They didn't! The rich and the superrich only see ways to further add to their own wealth based on the misfortune of others. In Phoenix, the value of forclosed homes is down to almost 50%. Are people looking for a home getting the chance to buy these places? No! "Investors" are outbidding them with cash in hand for resale at inflated prices when the market stabilizes.

Same goes for David Gregory of NBC news. His wife was top legal council for the OKCity bombing trial. She was also top legal at Fannie Mae when it "legally" made billions in fraudulent loans. Why do you think it was Gregory that got to ask Bush all those softball questions for several years? Once you're apart of the fraud youre apart of the family.

Michael Moore is a hero journalist whose great works of fimmaking will live long beyond the small minds who disparage him for his honesty and ability to speak truth to power.

I anxiously await his take on the disaster that free market capitalism wrought.

I fear that Moore will make the economic downturn story into another mockumentary (mock documentary film) that is merely a propaganda piece used to advance his personal conspiracy theories. Moore makes some good points but I must admit that at the end of Bowling for Columbine and Sicko, I felt his conclusions were incoherent and complete non-sequiturs from the cases he had built in the films.

His personal conspiracy theories? Once upon a time, in Germany, there was a conspiracy to get rid of an entire race of people and it almost worked. That was a conspiracy. Conspiracies exist, and to propose that they are always something to be discounted allows them to continue. Conspiracies are plotted all the time, but few succeed. That's my personal conspiracy theory.

Look, we shouldn't be cheering on this guy just because he's making a documentary. His work needs to be scrutinized for honesty and objectivity. He often uses emotions and hyperbole to make his points. This is really not an honest and clear-eyed view of the problems and issues he covers.

I do, and can't wait to watch this Wall street piece. After all, Sicko was right on the money. I just hope his next docu will be about the 12.000 boys and girls who got molested by good Christians in Ireland, while Pope and Bishops were enabeling and covering up the abuse.

I agree a documentary in the expose style should be made, but not by him. I want facts and objectivity, not emotionalism.

People like me? Because I criticize Moore's style all of a sudden there's a "people like me"?

I think a documentary on the meltdown is called for (I watched the one on PBS and it was amazing). I just don't think Moore is the guy who can deliver one with facts and objectivity.

I can't believe there can now be any doubt that Moore has hit the nail on the head in every one of his movies, especially Fahrenheit 911. He has been right every time, and the nutbag right wingers who reflexively attack him have been wrong, every time. Has he made mistakes, been too self-absorbed in the opinion of some, too heavy handed, melodramatic, etc? Sure. But lined up against the facts that he presents is such stark and clear relief against the sea of MSM BS that prevails in America today, those faults are truly minor. It's like criticizing Tiger Woods for his shirt when he wins a tournament.

There is a briliant article in the May 18, 2009 issue of The New Yorker by Nick Paumgarten that weaves an excellent, accessible narrative which goes into great depth about the factors that contributed to this mess over the past 30 years.

There were many contributing factors to the meltodwn, the Community Reinvestment Act and the Commodity Futures Modernization Act which gave a get out of jail free card on page 262 since HOW credit default swaps were constructed violated all state gaming and gambling laws and essentially brought back the outlawed bucket shops of the early 1900's.

I look forward to seeing IF MM covered this as well.

YAY!! I am sooo glad Michael Moore is doing a movie on everything that happens, because if not for his guidance, I wouldn't be able to understand anything or make up my mind about world events!! In fact, I get all of my views and ideas directly from his movies!! It's almost like I don't even need to think - I just believe everything Michael Moore tells me and I will be okay!!! HOORAY!!

When is somebody (PBS) going to do a documentary about Michael Moore? The man is a genuine American genius. He's the Thomas Payne of the modern era. Every film he's made has been controversial in that it points out some horrendous affront to our democracy, and every one of them have been proven by the major events of our time.

He's worthy of the Ken Burns treatment, at least.

Can't wait for the film. Especially on this topic.

Republicans will be absolutely incensed when they learn MM doesn't lay the entire blame for the financial meltdown squarely on Chris Dodd, Barney Frank, "people who took out mortgages they knew they couldn't afford," ACORN, gay marriage, Barbra Streisand, and Clinton's weiner.
