NEW YORK — Michael Moore's documentary about the economic crisis will hit theaters on Oct. 2.

The announcement was made Thursday by Overture Films and Paramount Vantage.

The film is not yet titled. Moore earlier planned to make it more broadly about America as an empire. Instead, the documentary explores the causes of the global economic meltdown. Moore has called it "the biggest swindle in American history."

The division between rich and poor is old territory for Moore, who broke through 20 years ago with "Roger & Me" _ about General Motors closing a plant in his hometown of Flint.

Moore won the Academy Award for best documentary in 2003 for "Bowling for Columbine."

Michael Moore is STILL a hero!
I had no idea he was coming out with a new film.
We can always tell who the villans are by seeing how he is treated by the media hacks from Larry King to Charlie Rose. They hate him because he is a truth teller and he's a regular white guy, not some pandered to grace and favour spoiled media hack.

I can hardly wait!! FascistFox will be going ballistic!

Why taking so long? Work harder, and show us what you got as you go...
Make it a national project - documenting the downfall of crony capitalism.

Has much more effect as a finished product. If an automobile is moving at a speed of a foot an hour, it can't do much damage in a hit and run ;-)

Once again, Michael Moore tells America what no one else has the courage to tell.

Looking forward to this.

Watch "Money as Debt" for an explanation of how money and banking works. It is shocking. You can find it on the internet and watch for free.

Moore needs to leave his audience with the following point. The present crisis has been growing for 40 years, and is not simply a monetary phenomenon, but one rooted in the market system itself. By seeking always to expand profits, capitalism's creative energy forces productivity increases into the market place, thereby undermining the very source of its profits--workers. Financial speculation becomes a primary component of profit making in such an environment, while production increasingly is pushed into the background--frequently in low wage zones outside the developed world.

I grew up in a world where the only people who deserved a lot of money were doctors.

The people who got us into this mess were politicians, and baby boomers. Why boomers? Because they taught their children that you can do or be anything you want and that they were the most important creatures on earth. Children are born greedy. I need this and I need that. It's perfectly normal. It's up to parents to give them limits and teach humility. Boomers dropped the ball, big time. If they did their job, we wouldn't be in this mess.

Boomers didn't cause the Great Depression. The 60's were already experiencing economic difficulties--and not just in the US, but in Europe and Japan also.

So what are you suggesting? That Baby Boomers should be euthanized for raising a bunch of spoiled brats?
When the Baby Boomers wanted something done, they got off their behind and did it. They stood up to the military industrial complex and crooked presidents like Johnson and Nixon. They marched and protested to get an end to the Vietnam war. I haven't seen the young generation doing much to stand up against corrupt politicians who are so blatantly in the pockets of Big Corporations that it makes me sick. Baby Boomers today have too much to lose and don't have the energy to take to the street. The young people should not wait for someone to lead them by the hand. Go out there and protest. Show how angry and frustrated you are that corrupt politicians have allowed bankers to pillage the country, that they allowed the entire industrial base of the country to be shifted to southeast Asia and that all the criminal activities by high level executives have gone largely unpunished. IT'S YOUR COUNTRY AND YOUR FUTURE.

It was also deregulation that caused the first major crisis in 50 years since the great depression, blame Reagan to start, as he pushed government as the problem and deregulation as an economically good thing. ( Not sure how, no one ever explained that ), then of course in 2000 with Clinton still president and support of 90% of the senate they deregulated even more, and then even more deregulation under Bush until this complete collapse.

The problem with business in the last 25 years has not been the market system pushing the expansion of profits, it has been the market pushing the pursuit of potentially illusory gains on financial products ranging from common stock itself to Credit Default Swaps.

We have an entire generation of business leaders who think that the only metrics for success are increase in stock price or the quarterly "kicking the can down the road" revenues.

Forty years ago a quality company made profits and paid dividends - to shareholders who owned the stock for more than half a day.

Productivity gains would always have been a focus. What has killed us is execs putting accounting trickery ahead of actual business, pumping up the stock price on that basis and getting compensated based on both the phony accounting and the stock price runup.

I got to watch bowling for columbine with michael moore (well, he was a couple rows away but we met him before the movie). He is really a stand up guy, wears old non-flashy cloths and of course the michigan state cap. All the rethuglicans says he's just another liberal maniac who doesnt care about people only money... it could not be further from the truth michael moore is a great man and a great michigander

ooooh, I didn't know this was coming.......can't wait to see it, although it will be terribly depressing. I would say I hope it causes a major revolt of the citizens, but Obama already has too many headaches and it's not his fault anyway. And I sincerely hope MM denotes which major players in the scandal belong to which party - because you know they're probably 90% republican.

Your logic is off. Obama NEEDS a revolt (not insane tea bag-style revolt) in order to give him space to do what needs to be done. Congress REALLY needs a revolt so that they realize that the days of getting away with being unabashed corporatists is OVER.

Two points:
First, I hope nobody is still naive enough to complain that Moore's work isn't "objective". Documentaries are SUPPOSED to take positions on issues, and it's unrealistic to presume that objectivity is even possible in documentary.
Second, I hope there are enough people still working when it comes out that it has an audience!

No worries, no one has screened his films for free more than Michael Moore.
The problem is, the democonservatives will chastise him if he dares to criticize Obama or Geitner (most likely, he'll do that), like when he touched Hillary in Sicko. His producer tried to strip that entire segment.

There was a time when I was a fan of Michael Moore's work, but since "Bowling for Columbine" I have come to believe that he's not much different than an ambulance chaser who preys upon the damaged, the weak, the disenfranchised, the naive and the gullible.

That he has done good work is true, but he has also lined his pockets reporting on the misery of others and, at least for me, that's no longer an acceptable way to earn a living. This latest film seems like another crass and venal attempt to profit off the misery of other while he simultaneously sets himself up as the last honest man on the planet.

Well, Michael, I'm just not buying your act anymore.

I'd like to hear another point of view besides what's on the mainstream media. AND, I'd rather have MM lining his pockets than having wall street CEO's lining their pockets. Maybe if CEO's and our leaders didn't commit awful acts, then MM wouldn't have any work to do. I take his work with a grain of salt, but I don't believe he's doing it to profit off the sick and poor. If that were true, he'd look like a wall street banker than the way he does.

A. You were never a "fan"

B. He "preys" on the people that prey on others.

Just because he shows people like the loony farmer from Michigan that tells his paranoia stories and sleeps with a gun under his pillow, doesn't mean he paid them to act as anything but as they are.

The reverence that he treated the victims of Columbine and the US heath scare system, was quite admirable.

By the way, if he didn't make money, how could he keep making his films?

Yes, I was a fan.

But he's become a vampire; exploiting every major news event of the last several years. Columbine, 9-11, Iraq, our broken healthcare system, and now this economic implosion.
He deals in death and despair, but does not actually get his own hands dirty. Witness the fact that he did not go to Iraq himself but used work and footage done for him.

As far as reverence afforded the victims of Columbine? Columbine was straight up exploitation of young people who were forever damaged by the events of that day and I completely reject your characterization. Using the same premise of Roger and Me, he took that paralyzed young man on a quixotic journey that exploited him and made for fatuous cinema that glorified only Michael Moore.

I have no objection to him making money to fund his films, but he's a very wealthy man today and if he was truly sincere about his good work, he'd be giving up far more of that largesse to the people his films exploit, without paying them.

He is quite literally a vulture; dining on the flesh of the dead or mortally wounded. That doesn't mean I do not see the pathos, the humor, and the irony of his work, but it does mean I choose to no longer support him with my money.

Incidentally, I loved his TV Nation show.

Sorry if my view gets the panties of a few posters in a bunch.

If you knew the answer why ask?

Oh, because you didn't.

Not only did I watch the film, I was also a strong advocate for his work prior to its release. Unfortunately, with "Columbine"" Moore lost me as a fan. Searching for a thread or narrative structure Moore resorted to naked pandering and exploitation in that film.

Moore made a rookie mistake in that he tried to make sense of the senseless and he was unable to build a cohesive argument. Mostly because that film was clearly a rush job and save for a few rare moments, had nothing substantive to say other than look at me, I'm Michael Moore, chronicler of the problems in the USA!

BFD, anyone over the age of 18 and with an IQ above room temperature is already well aware of the problems.

Sorry if stepping on your sacred cow hurts.

The "master/slave" or, if you prefer, " lord/serf " arrangement between rich and poor historically has been based upon domination of one form or another; terrorism, basically, by the strong against the weak, to keep them "in their place", and maintain the hierarchical economic status quo.
HOWEVER, now the "underclass" has access to unprecedented communication and fact-gathering technology, and knowledge really IS power, and there really is power in numbers. In part because of this, the "overlords" know they are standing on shaky ground, which in some cases is collapsing beneath them.
So they will in desperation try to save their system, and their position atop it. But it does not deserve to be saved, and they need to be prevented from further pillaging the economic "village" we all share.
