ARTESIA, N.M. — It was a humbling moment for the former commander in chief: President George W. Bush was walking former first dog Barney in his new Dallas neighborhood when it stopped in a neighbor's yard for relief.

"And there I was, former president of the United States of America, with a plastic bag on my hand," he told a group of graduating high school students in New Mexico on Thursday. "Life is returning back to normal."

Bush, in one of his few public appearances since leaving office in January, told the students that leaving office lifted a heavy burden.

"I no longer feel that great sense of responsibility that I had when I was in the Oval Office. And frankly, it's a liberating feeling," he told seniors from Artesia High School.

He received a warm welcome in the southeastern New Mexico community, the Roswell Daily Record reported. Bush declined interviews and no video cameras were allowed inside.

The crowd gave him multiple standing ovations and after his speech he was presented with a sculpture of an eagle taking flight from a torch. The sculpture will be dedicated at City Hall on Memorial Day in honor of Bush and America's veterans.

Bush invoked an Iraq veteran's story to motivate the students to continue their educations. He described visiting Army Staff Sgt. Christian Bagge, a soldier from Oregon who lost both legs in combat.

When he visited Bagge at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Bush told him that someday Bagge would get out of his bed and run.

Then, one day, an aide went into Bush's office and said Bagge was waiting on the South Lawn and wanted to go running with the president.

If Bagge could do that, Bush told the students: "You can go to college."

Bush said he hoped President Barack Obama's administration would be successful. He also said he was writing a book about some of the difficult decisions he made while in office.

I have read some of the posts about this article and am completely disgusted at what I have read. I am a recent college graduate, currently serving enlisted Marine and very shortly will be leaving to attend officer candidate school, and I am absolutely disgusted by what I have read here. The blatant disrespect, lack of intelligent comment or even debate is appalling. The low brow comments are only a sign of the sheer lack of intelligence from this group.

It is liberating to know GWB is no longer in office as well as Cheney. Now if only Cheney would disappear like Bush pretty much has.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And where, exactly, do we leave *your* pile/mess that you left our great country, once we have finally cleaned it up for you/Cheney/Rumsfield/Rice (your father excluded as Clinton cleaned up that failed mess) --?
We all can't wait to be able to agree with you on one thing: "Life is returning back to normal." Go away!
it galls me beyond belief every time bush uses stories of maimed soldiers he sent into the meat grinder based on his lies.
#43 is NOT AT PEACE, his hiding from himself announces it! If he has one shred of humanity in him, after all Cheney is unique, he carries heavy baggage on his carcass and deeply troubled insides. His religion-on-sleeves would ensure his soul remains crucified forever. He is being disingenuous about feeling “liberated”, trying desperately to convince himself. Life will never be normal, if any real soul within him can help it! His heavy burdens will remain through the end of his days.
Sense of responsibility he never felt, so that part maybe true. No video cameras allowed is as much a sign of hiding from himself as it is the same secrecy that defined his corrupt administration.
How incongruous to dedicate him and veterans together! Bagge and other’s lost limbs-lives deserve to remain permanently imprinted on the soul of one who must bear responsibility as the architect of a fake war foisted on this nation in light vein.
Let him not do any Cheney(s) in his book, if he wants to reap real cathartic value from writing it. If he is any true Christian!
Perhaps he should have gone on picking up poop without interruption, never running for the Presidency. As truly decent-God fearing people, we wish burdens on his soul diminish, but will, only with confronting himself and confessing all his misdeeds. As such, we await his book only with those expectations. Do not blow it Georgie, Dicky has already decided to do so!
Bush and the Pooper Scooper is an inspirational story showing that it is never too late to find one's calling in life. I just wish he'd discovered his avocation back in Nov. 2000.
