CHICAGO (AP) -- Chicago police say they're conducting an internal investigation after a car allegedly driven by an off-duty police officer struck and killed a boy riding his bicycle.

The department says a 39-year-old officer has been relieved of his police duties following the incident Friday around 1:30 a.m. on the South Side.

A police spokeswoman says the crash was a hit-and-run. The Chicago Tribune is quoting witnesses who say the car was speeding and didn't stop after hitting the child.

The family of 13-year-old Trenton Booker says he sneaked out with friends after going to bed. They say they didn't realize he wasn't home until police officers came to inform them he was dead.

The boy's father, Terrence Booker, says the impact tore his son's body to pieces and killed him immediately.

Sorry to hear this story...Officer should be put under the jail. But why isn't anyone talking about a 13 year old out alone @ 1:30 AM? Riding a bike?????

He was with friends and it's really irrelevant to a COP (not some chucklehead) running him over and not stopping.

It doesn't matter what time the boy was riding a bike. It's irrelevant to the situation. Anyway the article says he sneaked out to be with friends. Doesn't change the fact that this cop.....a COP...fled the scene after hitting him.

Yet another Chicago cop will get away with a crime you or I would be immediately locked up for.

Why isn't the alleged cop's name issued... Imagine if it were a black man who was accused of hit and run ... His name would be splayed all over every media outlet

Um more than likely the cop was in fact Black.

But in typical Chicago fashion, there is only outrage when a cop kills, never when gang culture kills. when there should outrage when ANYONE kills.

For me, strip the badge from the cop, give him 6 months in jail (why?) cause i also feel they should site the parents of the child for breaking curfew.

i really don't think they should not be held accountable as much as the reckless cop. when chicago kids are constantly getting shot and killed by gang violence WITH FRIENDS. go run than excuse with the kids over east that got shot up together.

whats crazy these kids keep getting killed ironically AFTER curfew. isnt this why flager is doing the upside flag? if you really want to stop the violence stop playing the role and stop setting these kids up for failure. you know stuff pops off after 11pm, watch your dayum kids.

trust me, lets see how much they "hate" cops, when they up the monitoring. cause if there is no real response with cops now, soliders will be later.

Sometimes I read blog comments and often wonder if there is a human being or machine commenting.

I agree parents should watch their children, but children will be disobedient and look what happened a drunk police officer kills him. I remember my parents giving me the honor thy mother and father speech... like most kids it went in one ear and out of the other ear. You should check yourself and stop blaming the victim. The police officer was irresponsible he promised to uphold the law not break the law by driving inebriated. Not a good...look.

WOW... are you serious? - Sooo if you watch your kids they won't get shot? You've got

to be kidding me! --

Many of the children that were murdered were killed in broad daylight. (NOT after curfew)

Some were on their way home from school or simply playing in front of their homes.

What needs to be addressed is --

- One ... - defuse the demand for guns (in our youth) -- therefore defuse the incoming supply.

-Two ... Stop ignoring and dismissing bad behavior from our Sons / Nephews/ Cousins Some of us are living with children who have and/or are about to murder another child.

Make them accountable with everything. Don't let them dismiss you.

*** If you suspect your child/ neighbor/family member of a weapon. TELL TELL
THE Parents first. / - Parents Check the bed rooms -- CHECK CHECK
--Tell the Police ! The FBI The CIA !! TELL !

Leave a note - write a letter if you're scared. But TELL .

GO TO your Children's School -- Find out what they are doing. Get the teachers email. If you as a parent work during school hours.

-- For those of us who have young sons. Love them enough i spite of yourself and what you have been told.

Get them into counseling. Black children who kill hate themselves. So they have no value for life.

What we have been doing is not working and has not worked ! This summer is a scary

You seriously are closed minded to say such things about these parents and this boy. Did you deliberately ignore the part about him being an honor roll student? Shouldn't THAT in itself tell you that he was just a 'child' being a 'child', period? Obviously his parents have tried to raise him to be a responsible individual, but that doesnt seem to matter at all.
I have read too many hateful comments geared toward the parents and I honestly cannot understand why. They are not the ones that should be on trial here. The police officer was drunk, fled the scene, denied a breathalyzer, and then was granted bond, which he made with $100,000 cash..... Any average citizen would have been denied bond.
These parents have lost their child forever to an irresponsible officer of the law and you think they should be further punished because their boy decided to innocently misbehave by staying out past curfew!? The boy DIDNT KILL ANYONE!
What is wrong with you?

The investigation will uncover it or someone influential in the department will find out and the evidence will be buried. Just notice how they'll stall this case.

I don't know why I'm surprised but I am.

I can't believe an officer would hit someone and then just leave them there like a dog in the street. I understand accidents happen but to hit someone and just leave them there is beyond belief for me.

I would guess because he is a cop he fled the Scene, like most if not all hit and run drivers have something to hide, drunk, outstanding warrants ect.

How does a freakin' cop have the audacity to commit a hit-and-run?? He shouldn't even have been given the badge in the first place.

R.I.P. to this young soul.....

Chicago Police cannot be trusted to handle this. They will wait until outrage dies down and bury this case. The officer will be forced to quit or retire and the family will be placated with a settlement, IF that.
