Pelosi

The length of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's opening remarks at a press conference often correlates to the political barometric pressure level. The longer the opening, the worse the pressure.

If the Pelosi-Pressure-Correlation-Matrix is any guide, she was feeling it Friday morning. Her regular Thursday morning briefing with reporters had been pushed to Friday. Pelosi, well aware that the assembled scribes were ready to lob who-lied-to-whom-and-when questions at her, entered the room with a phalanx of what one reporter jokingly referred to as human shields.

On April 23rd, as Republicans pounded her with questions about when she was first briefed about waterboarding and why she didn't object more forcefully, she first took questions from every child in the room for take-your-kids-to-work day; she even asked a few who didn't raise their hands to come up with some.

When she finally took questions from grownups, she responded with an answer that has had Capitol Hill distracted ever since. Pelosi said that she and the others briefed by the CIA "were not, and I repeat, were not told that waterboarding or any of these other enhanced interrogation techniques were used." Three weeks later, she expanded on that denial, saying that the CIA lied to her and others in a September 2002 briefing when they said they hadn't waterboarded detainees yet.

On Friday, she took the podium to hail the accomplishments of Congress and lay out the agenda going forward: health care, energy, financial sector reform. Then she deployed her human shields. Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) took the podium, and offered a soliloquy about the unity of the Pelosi-Hoyer team.

"When do we just start shouting out questions?" wondered one reporter as the minutes ticked by.

Hoyer finished and Pelosi retook the podium, then yielded to Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.) who waxed prolific about consumer debt, brandishing a letter he'd received from his credit card company cutting his limit.

Batting cleanup -- and warming up his filibuster skills for his eventual ascension to the Senate -- was Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), who had a full page of notes to guide his talk. A recent government report, he said, had found cost overruns in the Defense Department. Those cost overruns must be addressed.

A reporter squeezed in the room from the back, telling colleagues he'd been watching the spectacle on TV but had to see it for himself.

He was there in time to hear Van Hollen share his thoughts on climate change, health care, credit card reform and fraud in the financial markets. Pelosi added a remark on the need for a commission to study the financial crisis and the importance of education. Then she offered to take a few questions, 30 minutes after the scheduled start of the presser.

She chose her first mark wisely. The press corps groaned as a reporter asked who Pelosi would like to appoint to the financial collapse commission, a question she took her time in answering.

The second question was on the CIA issue. Pelosi stood by her earlier statement but declined to elaborate. "I have made the statement I'm going to make on this. I don't have anything more to say about it. I stand by my comment. And what we are doing is staying on our course and not be distracted from going forward in a bipartisan way on jobs, health care, energy for our country. On the subject that you asked, I made the statement I'm going to make. I don't have anything more to say," she said.

Should the CIA officers resign?

"I don't have anything more to say," she said again. "Another subject?"

The next question, straight from left field, asked whether Democrats were hatching their own "K Street Project" modeled after former Majority Leader Tom Delay's fundraising scheme.

There isn't one, she said. With Delay safely dispatched, a Pelosi aide called out "last question!" Laughter erupted from the press corps.

The final question was on her impending trip to China. Pelosi, a fierce critic of Chinese government oppression, will be there for the tenth anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre. She'll face intense pressure from human rights activists to stay firm in her tough stance and will be pushed the opposite direction by the Chinese government.

Get comfortable for her opening remarks.

I cheered like crazy when Nancy Pelosi became Speaker of the House. Now she has painted herself into a corner, a corner of her own making, much as some might wish to blame this on the Republicans. Her demeanor in the presser today was not one of confidence, not the demeanor of someone who holds even half the cards. Her credibility is shot, and I really think the Democrats are doing themselves a great disservice to let her remain as the voice of the party in the House.

When I see Pelosi I see her lips flapping but nothing that makes sense comes out. A much better Leader would be Steny Hoyer.

Why doesn't she appoint her own Truth Commission. Is she to chicken to do so? I think she is.

I don't like Pelosi, but this "what did she know and when did she know it" is a pathetic dodge that only the most simpleminded would fall for and Hoyer is a corporatist shill, no better than a pub. We need a true progressive as Speaker of the House and above all they must not be afraid of the pubs. For the time being, I'd rather have the devil we know than the one we don't.

I don't blame the Speaker for concentrating on the actual work the Congress has done this week rather than the BS faux controversy the media has covered and perpetuated.

I cannot believe the media failed to uncover statements by Boehner and other stating that the CIA lied to them. Shameful!

I am glad she is focused on the work the Congress has done and will done. Way to go!

As I see it, The Speaker is developing a case of Biden disease in her old age. She has become intoxicated with her own image as she gazes in the mirror. Keep in mind that the moment Barry won the election her heart fluttered and she began to drool as she and her minions started laying plans for the many "programs" .Most likely did'nt sleep for days as they made list after list of ways to out spend the Republican Party. So far it seems like they are on track to out spend all of the Congressional and Senate Reps. combined throughout the history of the country ! As the Church Lady said "isn't that special". In her attempt to insulate her-self from the impending heat fueled by The Truth Commission " she landed in four or five little poop piles that exuded from her cadaver like lips. Got the stuff all over her shoes, and tried to wipe it off on ....who ? the C.I.A.?? Now thats what I would call a bone head move .She has practically signed her own termination papers. You do not mess with the I.R.S. if you are a tax-payer .But the C.I.A. can make anything happen , they have the resources, man power and despite what we think. the real money directs them in the end.Pelosi has out done Biden and her days are numbered, as she will bring too much heat down on Barry....

Your computer smokes cigars and mine has the nasty habit of dipping snuff. In my opinion, both computers need to learn how to take themselves outdoors while they are smoking and dipping.

This situation needs to be thoroughly investigated. Either the third person in line for the presidency is lying thru her teeth or if the CIA did what she says they did then they need to clean house! If bo lets this slide under the table, he is even a weaker leader than I thought he was.

There is no if. Records have already been produced and witnesses have come forward to discredit the claims of the CIA and the CIA has already indicated that their records appear to be inaccurate, which means they were inaccurate. This has already happened. The republican manufacturers of drama with the aid of the provocative press are using this as a distraction for their own political purposes, which has nothing to do with actually helping government perform relevant duties. It is hard to get the real news unless you work at it some, but it is available. Thousands of nurses and doctors were in Washington D C to advocate for single payor healthcare. Did you hear anything about that on mainstreet media? I doubt it.

The Republican party has become GOPywood, an endless trailer dedicated to science fiction and action adventure. Everyday, there is a new trailer for a movie that will never be made. GOPywood creates false story lines and characters to play parts of heroes lambasting those infidel democrats. A story might go like this: "The demon democrats are taking over building rooftops with trees, gardens and solar collectors and will force people to breathe air contaminated with too much oxygen and force people to make energy, becoming enslaved to the grid in an effort to destroy the pious polluters who create jobs for desperate workers who may destroy the environment, but will have miserable jobs to make enough to be able to afford to shop at Walmart, our ideal social program. Only one man can save us, Dick Cheney, yes Dick will show up daily on Fox and other networks and defend the rights of the corporations to continue to provide the poor and middle classes with opportunities to sacrifice themselves for the good of the entitled royalty of America, the people who make this country great. At a television near you."

"Try spell check." is a complete sentence. It's an imperative sentence.

But what can you expect from someone who makes up for his/her lack of intelligence by insulting Pelosi's appearance, nonsensically, I might add"

Why is it nonsensical? She looks like she's made of wax. My "lack of intelligence" as you say is a laughable statement at best. That's not an imperative sentence at all, it's a fragmented sentence. Go back to school before you claim otherwise.

The grammar police routine is a bit tiresome. That sentence in question has a verb and an object and the subject is implied - it's not at all a fragment. It's a perfectly fine sentence, so calm down. About Ms. Pelosi's personal appearance, well your observation doesn't say anything at all that has any significance regarding her politics, or her sincerity, or her intelligence or virtue - it's just a nasty thing to say. What does that say about you? Your laughter is not the happy kind, I'm afraid. Anyway, I hope you have a better night for the rest of the night and good luck tomorrow.

Thats a bunch of crap. Obama released Redacted Top Secret information about the interrogations..He could release the rest of the report, the results, if he wished. He probably won't because it would not help his position.

Litigation has nothing to do with it. Top Secret information is not available to Litigation Discovery unless the President releases the information. The President is the only one in the US Government that can declassify at his choosing.

I do live in the real world and usually when someone has a press conference they answer questions from the press. If not, why not release a statement?

I don't know how to take the no response to my request. Someone needs to write that given a choice between water boarding and LA being attacked they would prefer attack.

I did read enhanced interrogation memo/release and it specifically stated that information about an attack from an Asian cell was given during interrogation. Harry Shearer, a blogger here, gave me the link. We had a woderful exchange without any name calling.

Press conferences are given all the time where the politician involved says we will not be taking any questions. It's a risk, but I think Pelosi felt she had been over this ground and w/o the imminent release of more documents, this was a he said she said situation.

The choice between waterboarding and an attack on LA is a false choice. There never was such a choice. You are creating an extreme hypothetical situation, when calmer methodologies and reasoned diplomacy and competence in law enforcement and leadership usually finds the right path without resorting to barbarism. When we get hit, we don't resort to barbarism because we are a civilized nation of laws. You like to think that Waterboarding can solve problems but you're mistaken - it just creates problems and paints our society as evil.
That's why we will see Bush and Cheney et al prosecuted for this.

Pelosi was right not to answer these questions because there is no there, there.

This is the biggest red herring of the year. It doesn't matter when Pelosi knew about waterboarding, or when. What matters is who gave the order to do it . . . and the republicans would rather not talk about that.

What is funny is she was actually putting her country first, and put her personal career aside, at a time when she agreed to these extreme measures during extreme times. (OK, she may have been going along to save her career at that time...different discussion). She was grand standing for the people here, or trying to settle a score, when it all blew up in her face. You cannot accuse the CIA of lying unless you have arrest warrant for someone. Big Oops!

That's BS, AntiSocialistfighter. What is all this BS about you can't accuse the CIA of lying business? That's what they did for damn near 8 years. She is not the first person to accuse the saintly CIA of lying, but it is laughable at the reason why they are trying to keep this one alive.

This is the same saintly intelligence that said that Saddam had WMDs. Yeah, the great agency of CIA. Even Republicans know that the CIA has lied.

What I want to know is what is suppose to be the reward for finding out what Pelosi knew and when she knew it? How does that wash when she was briefed, the waterboarding had already been performed many times over.

So I guess the back story is, that she did nothing. Yeah, right. As if there was something that she could have done that Cheney wouldn't have had her "swimming w/ the fish" for.

Give me a break!

Two comments.
1) I didn't know politicians had the right to refuse answering questions unless there is some legal reason? Isn't she answerable to the public?

2) For all the people that think water boarding a terrorist, that is implying another attack is coming, is worse than people dieing in LA please state it now. I live in the LA area and want to see it written. Terrorist right to attack exceeds LA residents right to live. You might as well address NY also, "Attack or water board?", sorry NY your going down.

Let's see, no harsh interrogations, 3000 Americans dead. Three bad guys scared into talking, no attack.

Unfortunately for you, there is no evidence that suggests torture stopped any attack, in LA or anywhere else. On the other hand, there is a preponderance of evidence from our own experts that suggests torture does not work.

It's time to take your head out of the sand.

I am currently manufacturing the world's smallest violin, to be played in sympathy for the poor abused reporters who had to sit through an entire HALF AN HOUR of listening to a prominent elected official speaking to crucial issues of the day before they were permitted to launch their redundant assault on her.

Poor little babies, not being permitted to ask questions that have already been asked and answered. They could have been drinking or raiding someone's buffet line, or doing some of the other important things that fill up a reporter's day.

ALL IS NOT PROCESS!

POLICY MATTERS!

I love newspapers, but methinks they deserve to die. Not that the other media are any better, but newspapers really ought to know better.

"A reporter squeezed in the room from the back, telling colleagues he'd been watching the spectacle on TV but had to see it for himself."

Who. The. Hell. Cares.

This sentence is emblematic of the piece of fertilizer that this story is. This is a story about the media's spectacle-making ability. Never mind that there is no there, there; that Pelosi did not devise or authorize torture.

Pelosi did not authorize interrogation sessions that resulted in genital mutilation, permanent brain damage and 100 deaths.

Ignore that and report on reporters not reporting what matters.
