CLERMONT, Ky. — Bourbon drinkers have been mixing Jim Beam for years. Now, the maker of the world's top-selling bourbon is too.

Part of Illinois-based Fortune Brands Inc., Beam is preparing a national rollout of Red Stag, a specialty whiskey that infuses natural black cherry flavors into 4-year-old bourbon.

Even brand ambassador Fred Noe, a great-grandson of Jim Beam, sees the tinkering with a time-tested Kentucky tradition as a positive way to lure new customers.

"The bourbon purists might think it's a little too sweet," Noe said during an event touting Red Stag at Beam's Clermont distillery in central Kentucky. "But for somebody who is not a big fan of bourbon, this may be an opportunity for them to enjoy bourbon in a little different way."

The 80-proof Red Stag by Jim Beam, as the product is formally called, is being billed as Beam's biggest rollout since the launch of Jim Beam black label bourbon more than a decade ago. Shipments start June 1 after about a year and a half in development.

Chuck Cowdery, an American whiskey writer and author of "Bourbon, Straight," likes the taste.

"I think the quality of the infusion, the depth of the flavors is pretty sophisticated," he said. "It doesn't taste like they threw some flavor house cherry flavor in there."

The product could appeal to younger consumers who may prefer bourbon in cocktails rather than straight up, he said.

Beam joins other Kentucky bourbon makers that already flavor their standbys.

Heaven Hill Distilleries Inc., which plans to mix honey flavoring into its popular Evan Williams bourbon and call it Evan Williams Honey Reserve, come September, has offered Evan Williams Holiday Egg Nog in season since the early 1990s, spokesman Larry Kass said.

Wild Turkey's American Honey, a liqueur blended with honey and Wild Turkey bourbon, has been gaining sales the past couple of years, said Eddie Russell, Wild Turkey's associate distiller. But he said it's premature to predict a craze.

And Adam Graber, senior brand manager for Jim Beam, agreed.

"There's probably one or two other flavors that make sense in that category," he said, not divulging those other flavors. `But I don't see it exploding like a flavored rum or a flavored vodka."

Graber said Beam will be "fairly conservative" marketing Red Stag, with the biggest promotional push a sponsorship of Kid Rock's summer concert tour. Red Stag has a suggested retail price of $17.99 for a 750-millileter bottles.

The Evan Williams egg nog is Fantastic! Jim Beam bourbon, I don't think so! Bourbon and branch water, Gin and Schwepps tonic water with a wedge of lime. Vodka, from the freezer into a frozen glass, Scotch with a touch of ice and tiny splash of water (to bring up the flavors) What next, flavored beer? err malt liquor, oh never mind they already do that. "an old purist"

Makes a great Jello Shot with Cherry Jello!

From the Jim Beam web page:

"214 years was a long time ago. Think colonists with powdered wigs and wooden teeth who had to drink alcohol in the hopes that it would combat the effects of unsanitized water, poor living conditions and fortify their diets. During this time, immigrants from Germany named Boehm came to America. They later changed the spelling to Beam, and fortunately for us, seven generations of Beams would—and still do—ensure that their name would remain synonymous with the world's finest and best selling bourbon."

Maybe not much longer ...

Bourbon is well... bourbon flavored.

Jack D. and Knob Creek are great bourbons. JB is noxious!

Now Makers Mark is bourbon. Straight up, on the rocks. Mixing and flavorings infused is no good.

Jack Daniels is Tennessee whiskey, not bourbon.

I might give it a shot, but Jim straight has been fine by me.
Ten High, on the other hand, needs all the help it can get.

This is an attempt to lure teenagers. Plain and simple. To basterdize the natural taste of bourbon with cherry sweeteners is a marketing ploy to attract the younger palate. I am appalled at this, but I guess the marketing to teenagers wont be complete until the Red Stag label is prominantly displayed on a highway asphalt surface at the scene of a deadly car wreck. I think marketing execs in this mess ought to be fired................

Adults have exactly the same urge to enjoy sweets as teenagers--evolution's attempt to get us to eat more fruit. It's probably a minority that drinks a crap bourbon like Jim Bean straight.

Since the US birth rate has fallen, booze for teen-agers isn't going to be mass market. The baby boomers have long since developed a brand loyalty for booze. Distillers & rectifers will have to learn to make money in a shrinking market or close. When the baby boomers die off, booze makers must adjust to an ever shrinking market.

I have to say I disagree with that. I and other people I know have noticed that we don't have the urge to eat sweets that we had when we were young.

Jim Beam is too sincere. US diplomats serve Jim Beam. If you want real bourbon, try JW Dant 100 proof, aged 4 years & unflavored. You can still taste JW Dant 3 days after you sober up. Money is hard to get. You can't afford to get drunk on Jim Beam every day. Get 3 750ml bottles of JW Dant to feel sick, drunk all week. Your body reeks of the smell of JW Dant for 3 days. Your sweat, feces & urine smell like JW Dant for that 3 days too. JW Dant is a lot cheaper than Jim Beam. Flavored bourbon is as bad as using Coke for a chaser & Jim Beam with its sincere taste & 80 proof. Yuck.

I've never tried JW Dant 100 and believe you just made a good argument why not to. Cheryl Mikela

It is an acquired taste. Stick to the sincere booze, madam. It will always agree with your prefences, sometimes called taste by the conventional.
Don't try Old Overholt, a Maryland Style rye. If you drink martinis, use Milshire Gin or Grey Goose Vodka. Stay away from brandy. It may be a good idea to stick to blended whisky, called rye in the east. Segrams 7 is safe blend of neutral spirits & whiskys with insipid flavors. Don't order single malt scotch; stick with Old Smuggler.
If you ever drink beer, order American beer, Miller, Bud or Coors. American beer is a style of beer having a low content of alcohol & no flavor. Most brewers are owned by foreign interests.

Blegh. I saw "Jim Bean" and vomited in my mouth a little bit. Bad memories. No flavoring can mask the permanent aftertaste of a Jim Bean drunken rut.

Actually, try another tumbler full in the morning and it will mellow out nicely.

Try JW Dant, 4 year old, 100 proof. It has a unique, most foul taste that kills the taste of everything, even Dixie Bell(e) gin or Cobbs Creek whisky. After you have puked up JW Dant you can't taste, smell or feel anything for hours. Dant is genuine drinking whisky.

Back in my Air Force days in Germany, we used to play a dinking game with Jim Beam and chased it with superbe German beer (bier) Binding with my favorite, gotta tell you I still remember those Jim Beam hangovers! Boilermakers all night long is NO way to live, but it was fun at the time.

Any taste other than "watered down" would be an improvement. "Wild Turkey" rules. It rips all the way down.
