For many years, unemployment in the United States was lower than in Western Europe, a fact often cited by people who argued that the flexibility inherent in the American system -- it is easier to both hire and fire workers than in many European countries -- produced more jobs.

More "negativity" --- these doomsday nay-sayers are a dime a dozen (& worth the same amount).
I say; 'ZIP-IT' --- these ridiculous postulations are of no use whatsoever and to the weak at heart , have the potential to act as 'self-fulfilling prophesies' , feeding on conveniently manufactured negativity (the Republican way).

It is a big falacy to think that the U.S. has not already usurped Europe in unemployment. This happened years ago. The problem is that the U.S. has no way of knowing just who and who is not unemployed since, after people fall off of unemployment benefits, there is no way to track them unless they fall into the welfare system. Washington is so good at fudging the numbers--be it focusing on how many Americans died as opposed to Americans permanently injured or how many Iraqi's died; or, Bush's fuzzy math at projecting budget debts and surpluses. Nobody knows the real number and nobody is willing to tell the truth.

In Europe, most people fall into the social saftey net after unemployment. Even when unemployed, at some point the government gets you to work, even if it not what you want to do. In the US... the people on the right tend to blame you for not finding work, even though they are the ones majorly responsible for tanking the economy.

I think it would be good to put a moratorium on Congress' pay for say.... one year. No medical benefits nor expense accounts.... nothing. But make them work and pay for everything out of pocket. Maybe at that time, when they are faced with financial ruin, will they actually finally get it!

I would honestly predict that unemployment is far into the mid-teens by this point.

Obama's auto task force is pushing the destruction of many American jobs and pushing the acceleration of foreign imports. This includes accelrating the impots of cas from China.

Dennis Kuchinich spoke on CSpan and it is clear the Wall Street task force is the enemy of working people. A group of Congressmen are trying to get transparancy from the task foce that lead to the bait and switchtactics of the task force.

While Bush did many damaging things to the US, Obama is about to rip out the heart of many communities and our manufacturing industry. Sadly, what Obama said was a task force to save the auto industry is just the opposite... a policy to accelerate the demise of the auto industry.

If Obama follows through with his task force, then he will become worse for this country than Bush.

Too bad Kuchinich is not the President. Obama speaks well but his actions are far removed from his words.

Tell it walking. If a "foreign" company makes their cars here what do you care?? "US" companies import their parts. It can be hard to differentiate. Toyota opened a plant here recently, would you like them to shut it down so you can "buy American."

Good point.
I think what is most important is that jobs stay here. People want a good product for their money.
I have no problem with Toyota being here--as long as they pay their fair share. They're creating jobs.
I would like to see these car companies make electric cars.We can do better than hybrids.

US companies design and build cars here using mostly local manufacturers. Foreign Manufacturers who manufacture here do all the design and management and associated support jobs overseas, and the assemble here, but most of their parts are imported. Most of the money leaves the country. Many of the jobs are lost.

Mandate Balanced trade or else lose all manufacturing and associated technology leadership.

Imports have job loss implications, loss of wealth (Obama is trying to borrow a trillion dollars from foreign manufacturering countries), loss of the arsenal of Democracy industrial infrstructure, and loss of technology leadership that will ripple down to our military.

You might understand more if you read a bit about how the two party system evolved and why it is a viable alternative to parliamentary coalition sometimes used in other countries. btw, how many major parties do Great Britain, Canada and Mexico have? Why do some our states like Minnesota manage to elect GOP candidates despite being overwhelmingly center left?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:13 AM on 05/23/2009

I do know the evolution. But this is a big country and we have a lot of opinions. It seems to me--and I am a tri-national and a citizen of a small country with many parties and a constitution based on the Federalist Papers--that we would just have more voices.

Minnesota is center-left economically but I can tell you from having lived there that it's not center-left socially, even in the Twin Cities. Lots of Republicans get elected in the red districts and people like Pawlenty get elected as moderates. Minnesota is really almost dead-center politically, (socially-slightly-right, economically-slightly-left) but has had some very popular Dems that keep the presidential votes going blue.

The problem is that the MSM automatically characterize 3rd party candidates as looneys on the fringe. Not likely to change, I'm afraid. MSM doesn't hide it's bias now, and they'll go with the dems every time, hyping their choice and tearing down the opposition, be they gop or 'other'.

The MSM has ripped apart many good potential Dems--Kucinich for one--and what about Howard Dean--just because he "screamed"--BFD! He would have probably been a good president, but we'll never know.He was a good Vermont Gov.

Maybe because we don't have public funding for campaigns-the BIG MONEY "party" (the wealthy elite) owns almost all of both parties-there are great exceptions like Kucinich and Sanders, but....

Clinton wisely signed Republican budgets to balance the budget.
Obama has no checks on his foolishness.

Good point. Yes, Clinton passed a budget surplus on to good ole W.

And with a Republican presidency, house and Senate, that lasted what? All of half a term?

Then it was record deficit time.

Let's give credit where credit is due:

“When a good or service is produced at lower
cost in another country, it makes sense to import
it rather than to produce it domestically.”
—Economic Report of the President, p. 25, Nov 2004

“Outsourcing is just a new way of doing
international trade. More things are tradable
than were tradable in the past. And that’s a
good thing.”
—N. Gregory Mankiw, Chairman of
President Bush’s Council of Economic
Advisors, Feb. 9, 2004

****************
The outsourcing of U.S. jobs “is part of trade...
and there can’t be any doubt about the
fact that trade makes the economy stronger.”
