New York Times:

For many years, unemployment in the United States was lower than in Western Europe, a fact often cited by people who argued that the flexibility inherent in the American system -- it is easier to both hire and fire workers than in many European countries -- produced more jobs.

The article deals with effect not the cause. however if you are interested to study the roots, read this article which is very helpful:

"Change in America doesn't start from the top down. It starts from the bottom up."

Ok, wonder how he thinks this is working for him now

In terms of unemployment, an economy needs people at the top to provide jobs to the unemployed.

If it will take 2 or 3 election cycles to turn things around, as I have been told by posters here, shouldn't Obama have mentioned this during his campaign? He ran on change, but there is no change possible for 8 to 12 years.

Good thing we rushed that trillion dollar spending bill through that fateful weekend. The urgency then was hyped to the point of hysteria. Whew! Glad we rammed that thing through- it's really taking hold now...just you wait!

The "productive use or service" - by which i'm assuming you mean product or service - were laid out by the Obama administration within the stimulus package. An emphasis on much-needed shovel-ready infrastructure jobs, like road and bridge repair neglected over the last decade; teaching jobs and school upgrades / retrofits; etc.

Investment in infrastructure and government programs to create jobs are proven to produce more and better results than the tired-out, ineffective conservative alternative (tax cuts).
___________________________________________________________________

Your statement that infrastructure and government programs to create jobs produce more and better results that tax cuts is proven. On a dollar for dollar basis the money is spent more efficiently with the private sector. So just making it up sounds good but does not make it true. It certainly is not working right now with the stimulus package that was passed in February.

How is money spent more efficiently in the private sector if it's not being spent at all to create jobs or finance small business (see Banks - not lending and GDP - shrinking).

(Also reference catastrophic financial crisis - barely averted)

The Soviet Union, Cuba and other worker's paradises spent huge amounts of money on their infrastructure and the results were a disaster.

Where does this money the government is spending come from? Either they print it (highly inflationary) or the liberate it from the taxpayer. The second choice assumes that the government is a better allocator of resources than us, the taxpayer. As I watch the government lurch from pouring money down one rat/hole to another, I start to have doubts.

"On a dollar for dollar basis the money is spent more efficiently with the private sector."

Prove it! Show the statistics please. Forgive my skepticism but please explain the double-digit rise in health care costs every year(due to the malfeasance of the insurance industry). Please explain the graft and waste in companies such as Enron and Halliburton. There are plenty more examples where these come from. It is simply capitalistic propaganda that the private sector is more efficient that the public sector.

Obama and the Dems will waste 100 times more than Halliburton could ever do.

Name one economy that has worked under the a command economy? Cuba, Venezuela, Russia, Eastern Europe? Even China only started to flourish once they moved to a capitalistic model. And graft and waste are hardly the domain of private industry. Look at the waste and fraud that accompany virtually all government programs(S.S., Medicare, etc.), think of the graft that occurs in politics (especially the Chicago variety). And the thing about private industry is it eliminates the wasteful and fraudulent comapanies (Worldcom, Enron, etc.) or at least tries to (AIG, GM, Chrysler, Citigroup, et al.)

It was mostly a R congress while he was in power so there was agreement there. And as I said there was some fancy accounting. Even if I take your point entirely D's have a better track record and given the economic mess left behind money does need to be thrown at it and we can hope it all works out. There is not a lot of choice.

I wouldn't be surprised if we are infact already worse than Europe
As some people might be aware, the United States calculates unemployment statistics differently than Europe does. They use use what is called a U-6 Rating and we use what is called a U-3 rating.
Basically this means that they count people as unemployed that we don't
http://www.harpers.org/archive/2008/05/0082023

They also have a much better safety net for their unemployed workers

What economic theories would those be? That the taxpayers should keep more of their money? That the government is a terrible allocator of resources? That we should encourage people to achieve? Are those false?

What is the productive use or service? Push papers around? What is the Demand? I thought the stimulus was supposed to accomplish that? Logic flaw on your end....

What a surprise - conservatives see examples of successful "socialist-style" government or social programs and immediately deny its efficacy in an American setting.

G o d forbid you should evolve just a little bit. Nope, can't have that... gotta stay in the 80's "Reagan was a freakin genius" era, while the world passes you by...

Is it any wonder the country's in the shape it's in? You know something's gone haywire when you treat health care like a commodity and your former administration made to.r.tu.re a key part of its policy.

Now the euphemisms, next, the truth.

When conservatives complained during the campaign that Obama was essentially a socialist - his Democrat supporters screamed foul. Now that his programs are being implemented we get comments praising "socialist-style" policies amid attacks on the idea of Capitalism.

I believe that the blush will come off the flower before we've gone all the way, but great damage is being and will be done.
