For many years, unemployment in the United States was lower than in Western Europe, a fact often cited by people who argued that the flexibility inherent in the American system -- it is easier to both hire and fire workers than in many European countries -- produced more jobs.

As you sit and grumble about your lost job, remember that somewhere on the planet, someone with a better education than you has taken your job from you.

=============

I don't disagree with most of your post, but I don't agree with this part of it, and here's why.

I called my credit card company to switch to a card with a lower interest rate; we got to talking about the weather and i mentioned that it was clear and sunny outside. He said it was raining where he is.

I asked him where that would be, and he said India (I was calling from Canada).

Are you trying to say that the guy in India taking my customer service call has more and better training than his counterpart either in Canada or America?

Jobs get shipped overseas (especially manufacturing jobs) not for more skill and education, but for lower wages and a padded corporate bottom line.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:30 PM on 05/22/2009

You both make good points. A lot of the outsourced jobs are for lower pay, but the level of education in Europe is far and away better. My children were educated here and in the UK and after moving to the US they both were so far ahead that they both finished school early, the eldest was two years ahead. Which makes us deficient in comparison.

The private sector will not hire in a low demand environment (they'll keep shedding jobs). Demand has to be created somehow.

The thing is, in Europe, being unemployed sucks, but it isnt a death sentence. Here, you lose your job, you lose you health insurance, you lose your ability to pay rent, buy food, pay for your child's education, etc. These are things that unemployed Europeans dont have to worry about. Sure, they might not be able to live the way they did before they became unemployed, but they can still live.

So what exactly is so wrong with European-style socialism that the right use that term like its an insult?

Ever since I was a kid.......a long time ago.....American economists, politicians and social critics have been predicting the end of European socialism. I'm still waiting for the collapse. In fact, as I've written before, my Italian relatives live pretty good lives...and even though they pay higher takes, they have managed to rebuild their continent into a 21st century place to live. Europeans are not turning in their passports to come live here (contrary to popular folktale).

Capitalism is a great system as long as you're winning. It's not so great when you're not.

Republicans want to destroy government, they despise it, and us...

Every Republican, every single one of them, has signed a pledge to a man who wants to drown "We the people" for the purpose of generating private profits. It is unethical ideology.

Job fairs are the absolute worst places there are to look for a job and are a complete waste of time. Know where I've had the best luck? Applying online to employers who are hiring direct and not through an agency. Second best luck -- agencies (they have an undeserved bad rap....)

How do companies think Americans will be able to afford any of their products when we are all working at sub-subsistence levels? At some point our backs will be broken. There will be only the haves and the have-nothings.

I don't understand the short-sightedness of a lot of these corporations. Somehow they think that they can continue to have increasing profits even as they drive down the price for labor.

Like Henry Ford said when asked by his competitors why he paid his employees "so much" he replied that he wanted more people to be able to afford his cars. He understood that only when people make a decent wage could they afford to perpetuate his business expansion. He knew that was the best way for him to get even richer.
