For many years, unemployment in the United States was lower than in Western Europe, a fact often cited by people who argued that the flexibility inherent in the American system -- it is easier to both hire and fire workers than in many European countries -- produced more jobs.

André Kerampran passed away today after battling for cancer for 3 years. Although a brave man who served in the French foreign legion from age 19 to 43, he lost his last battle. He was 51 years old. He was my best friend.

"You work three jobs? … Uniquely American, isn't it? I mean, that is fantastic that you're doing that."
—George W. Bush, to a divorced mother of three, Omaha, Nebraska, Feb. 4, 2005

This is what we are now dealing with--the legacy of Bush.

Republicans still seem to be reveling in their own ruinous governance.

"Taxation depletes demand and unemployment destroys demand."
-doawkins

That's why he wants to lower taxes for those who spend most of their income. And that's why he's trying to create jobs through gov't . The private sector is unwilling to hire people in a low demand environment so the gov't will do it and in the process create demand.

16 years ago, when Bill Clinton came into office, he announced his plan to raise corporate taxes. The Republicans swore that it would hurt business and job creation.

-- By the end of Clinton's term, we saw 22 million jobs created, Dow Jones tripled.

8 years ago, George W Bush cut business taxes, declaring that it would lead to enormous economic growth.

-- By the end of Bush's term, we saw 2 million jobs created, Dow Jones DOWN 2500 points from when he came into office.

From the discussions I've had with people here, a lot of people seem to think that one can "make it" in the modern world without the knowledge skills that are commonplace everywhere else on the planet.

I cannot believe that I live in a country filled with people who have not even the basic skills of calculus and physics. In just about every other country in the world, you must have a working knowledge of these things in order to graduate from school or get even an entry level job.

As you sit and grumble about your lost job, remember that somewhere on the planet, someone with a better education than you has taken your job from you.

If mathematicians and scientists can't create the knowledge which leads to the creation of things, the entire process is moot.

But make no mistake: We have a monopoly on the process. Good luck to you though.

Well, what you're seeing in the lack of education is 28 years of Republican principles: ruin the education segment, let them learn the basics of reading & writing: Voila! a large pool of uneducated and poorly educated workers who will work for low wages just to live. Then you can direct all the wealth of the country to the top 1%, which just happens to include the Rethuglican !! That has been their plan all along...since Reagan eviserated the unions and the middle class and started raiding the Treasury to give tax cuts to his rich friends. Clinton tried to reverse it and was doing a good job, but ran out of time. Bush 2 took the reins with relish and began the real ruination of the country when he took us to war on lies and started up the War Profit machine to award no-bid contracts to all his and Vice's buddies. At the end of 8 years you saw the results: a population cowed from the constant Republican bullying and fearmongering and a nation literally bankrupt and its financial institutions falling apart--but all Dubya's friends and cronies were doing very well, thank you very much. Repeat after me: Republicans are great at campaigning but rotten at governing, Lather, rinse, repeat. Now the Dems are acting as if they have Battered Wife Syndrome. Obama's really got his work cut out for him. If we know what's good for us, we should never let them hold high office again.

"I cannot believe that I live in a country filled with people who have not even the basic skills of calculus and physics."

And I can't believe we live on a planet that doesn't require everyone to study Anatomy & Physiology. I can imagine thousands of jobs that will never require calculus and physics - but I've yet to meet anyone who doesn't have a body - and one they should take better care of. We are profoundly unhealthy, and we seem to have become deluded into thinking that our health is the responsibility of some doctor, rather than ourselves. Nobody should be able to get any college degree without passing a basic A&P course.

John Adams (October 30, 1735 - July 4, 1826) was an American politician and the second President of the United States (1797-1801), after being the first Vice President (1789-1797) for two terms. He is regarded as one of the most influential Founding Fathers of the United States: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Adams

John Adams was the major contributor to the United States Constitution, as he had previously penned it's model, The Constitution of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the oldest working constitution in the world: http://www.mass.gov/legis/const.htm

Article VII. Government is instituted for the common good; for the protection, safety, prosperity and happiness of the people; and not for the profit, honor, or private interest of any one man, family, or class of men: Therefore the people alone have an incontestable, unalienable, and indefeasible right to institute government; and to reform, alter, or totally change the same, when their protection, safety, prosperity and happiness require it. -- There are no ammendments to this article.

America was modeled, or founded upon, the principal of commonwealth - This is the "marxistcommunist_socialism" the pantywaists are screaming about.

There's nothing wrong with working for the COMMON GOOD or the GENERAL WELFARE of the people.

Libs too often mistake INDIVIDUAL welfare for the GENERAL welfare, though.

YOUR job is to promote your own individual welfare. OUR job is to promote everyone's welfare.

Promoting your welfare at the expense of mine is exactly the OPPOSITE of what John Adams and the other founding fathers intended.

They have a criminal ideology and will say anything to get elected. "Balanced government" is a myth told by Republicans to trick people into voting them into office for example. They are nothing but tricks.
