BACKTRACK! Clay Aiken (Sort Of) Apologizes To Adam Lambert

NEW YORK — Clay Aiken says blood didn't truly pour forth from his ears when he heard runner-up Adam Lambert sing "Ring of Fire" _ and hey, he's sorry for his "colorful choice of words."

The former Idol contestant writes in a blog on his Web site dated Friday that "I obviously meant it as a colorful statement to imply that I did not enjoy what I heard." He also says he didn't mean it as "a 'slam' on Adam as a person."

He had blasted Lambert's take on the classic Johnny Cash tune as "contrived," "awful" and "slightly frightening." Aiken says he hopes Lambert can forgive him _ but adds Lambert probably doesn't care about what he said.

Aiken lost out to Ruben Studdard in 2003. He's since released several albums, appeared on Broadway and publicly confirmed he's gay.

Clay was right..diod you hear Adam's version..it was AAAwful..Adam is terrific...but he went south on that rearranged nightmare..Clay is a fantastic singer as is Adam..the twosecond placers were better than the winners.

I would have respected Clay Aiken more if he hadn't his issued his "sort of" apology. If he really felt as strongly as he did about Adam Lambert's performance that it warranted his banshee-like rant on his website, I wonder why he is even bothering with the flimsy apology. Yes, he is entitled to his opinion like everyone is entitled to his opinion. And I am entitled to mine when I say that I think he shows really poor form to bite the hand that brought him to where he is today. Yes, yes, we can all decry the commercialism of the American Idol industry, and the money that it makes, BUT that doesn't stop of us all from watching it and it didn't stop Aiken from benefiting from the enormous exposure of it all these years. So excuse me, if I don't buy Aiken's "I am just giving my opinion" bit and his "surprise" that at the reaction his comments have generated. He is disingenuous at best and obviously bitter about something.

Clay Aiken thought he was only sharing his thoughts with his claymates. After all, how could he know that someone who pays $30 a year to access his site would turn on him. Truthfully, all Clay needed to say was that he only catches A.I. once a season to see the sets. Even that seems a little self serving. In essence, A.I. without him on it isn't worth watching. The extra editorial that Clay gave was unnecessary. If Adam had asked my opinion (oddly enough he didn't) on his country week choice, I would have told him to skip the entire Johnny Cash catalog. I would have said Kenny Rogers instead and specifically "She Believes in Me"

And yet no one says anything when the AI judges for the past seven years have said nothing but despicable, hurtful things to so many contestants.

Clay needed to apologize. Adam, as a talented newcomer, did not deserve this hit from Clay who knows better. It sounded so mean spirited, petty, and unprofessional. Since when do so-called celebrities deliberately berate freshman performers?
