HOUSTON — The nation's turbulent space program will be run by one of its own, a calming well-liked former space shuttle commander.

President Barack Obama on Saturday chose retired astronaut Gen. Charles Bolden to lead NASA. He also named former NASA associate administrator Lori Garver as the agency's No. 2. If confirmed, Bolden, who has flown in space four times and was an assistant deputy administrator at one point, would be the agency's first black administrator.

Bolden would also be only the second astronaut to run NASA in its 50-year history. Adm. Richard Truly was the first. In 2002, then-President George W. Bush unsuccessfully tried to appoint Bolden as the space agency's deputy administrator. The Pentagon said it needed to keep Bolden, who was a Marine general at the time and a pilot who flew more than 100 sorties in Vietnam.

"Charlie knows NASA and the people know Charlie; there's a level of comfort," especially given the uncertainty the space agency faces, said retired astronaut Steve Hawley, who flew twice in space with Bolden.

Bolden likely will bring "more balance" to NASA, increasing spending on aeronautics and environment missions, working more with other nations in space, and emphasizing education, which the president often talks about when it comes to space, said former Johnson Space Center Director George Abbey, a longtime friend.

"He's a real leader," Abbey said Saturday. "NASA has been looking for a leader like this that they could have confidence in."

Bolden's appointment came during the tail end of the space shuttle Atlantis' mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope one final time. He was the pilot on the flight that sent Hubble into orbit in 1990.

Bolden, 62, would inherit a NASA that doesn't look much like the still-somewhat-fresh-from-the-moon agency he joined as an astronaut in 1980. NASA now "is faced with a lot of uncertainty," Abbey said.

Story continues below

Bush set in motion a plan to retire the space shuttle fleet at the end of next year and return astronauts to the moon and then head out to Mars in a series of rockets and capsules that borrows heavily from the 1960s Apollo program. The shuttle's replacement won't be ready until at least 2015, so for five years the only way Americans will be able to get in space is by hitching a ride on a Russian space capsule. And some of NASA's biggest science programs are over budget.

Earlier this month, the White House ordered a complete outside examination of the manned space program. The Obama administration hasn't been explicit about its space policy, with White House science adviser John Holdren saying the policy would come after a NASA chief was named.

"These talented individuals will help put NASA on course to boldly push the boundaries of science, aeronautics and exploration in the 21st century and ensure the long-term vibrancy of America's space program," Obama said of Bolden and Garver in a statement.

Bolden, a native of Columbia, S.C., and his wife donated $750 to the Obama campaign in 2008.

At NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, where Bolden spent about a decade, his impending appointment was quietly cheered on all week long.

The diminutive salt-and-pepper haired Bolden, who lives only a few miles from the space center, on Saturday morning said he couldn't talk until after Senate confirmation. He was busy answering congratulatory e-mails from home. He has his own consulting firm in Houston and sits on corporate boards.

Those who have flown or worked with Bolden can't praise him enough.

Retired astronaut Franklin Chang-Diaz interviewed to become an astronaut the same week as Bolden, was picked at the same time, and they flew together on their first flights.

Soon after that much-delayed launch of the space shuttle Columbia in January 1986, Chang-Diaz looked at his friend Bolden and saw that the shuttle pilot had a "big, big smile... we were kind of like kids in a candy store."

Hawley and then-U.S. Rep. Bill Nelson were also aboard that 1986 flight. Nelson, now the chairman of the Senate subcommittee on space that will oversee Bolden's nomination and one of the people pushing Bolden's nomination to the White House, commented: "I trusted Charlie with my life - and would do so again."

Kathryn Sullivan was the payload commander on the 1992 flight of Atlantis, which was Bolden's first of two shuttle commands. She said Bolden has all the aspects of leadership that a good chief requires. That includes experience, wisdom and the ability to listen to all sides. She called him "one of the finest people I've ever known."

"Charlie's a great leader," Chang-Diaz agreed. "He takes care of his team."

Mr.Bolden sounds like a fine choice. I hope people - both old and young - get more excited about space and astronomy. An awareness of the universe and the vastness of its possibilities is humbling enough to check any ego.

An amazing astronaut with proven NASA experience and a reputation for excellence will head NASA. If you have to tell us that he is an African-American, you missed the mark. Read his bio first.

It's important to note that persons of color are finally staring to move ahead in this country. I look forward to a future where more blacks are appointed to leadership positions and running the country. Isn't it amazing that it finally took a black man, Barack Obama to start running this country? For centuries unqualified whites were promoted and given unearned privileges. It's time for a new direction in this country. Whites need to step aside and let us lead.

And do not forget the other minorities - Hispanics, Native Americans, Asians - they now have the opportunity to move forward into leadership positions - an attainment not possible before President Obama took offfice.

I agree with everything except your last sentence. No one has to step aside. What's important is that we no longer let anyone or anything get in the way of lifting up ALL Americans.

This is an excellent choice.

I don't disagree with you. I just want to emphasize that he was chosen because he is eminently qualified.

Are blacks so incapable, in their own and misguided opinion, that they need special help and support to get anywhere in life? Quota in schools, quotas in jobs, quotas in government, quotas and quotas and quotas again. Frankly, this approach is profoundly demeaning and should have never been used. It formalizes, for everybody to see, that blacks need special help rather badly - when in fact they don't, being as capable as any other group (race, color, religion, etc.) to reach for the stars. People should not believe everything so-called liberals and 'leftists without cause' keep telling them: mostly, such people lie!!
P.S. In a country composed exclusively of minorities (larger or smaller in size), there are no 'special minorities' that should be singled out. None whatsoever!

"Whites need to step aside and let us lead."

Attention white people: Black people are not interesting in living side by side with you, under equality for everyone, they're interesting in "leading," whitey, which is a cute little way to say they really, really, really want to oppress white people.

Anyway, pretty much all of the comments prove that we really do not live in a racially blind society. Oh no. Race is still VERY important in our society. It's just nowadays, it's en vogue to hate anything white, and to embrace anything not white. If this guy is qualified for the job at Nasa, that's great, but that's not the issue here. All of you are excited that someone who is not white is leading Nasa. Which proves that the celebration is not only about a non-white succeeding, but it is also a celebration of a white person NOT succeeding. You don't care that an incredibly qualified PERSON has gotten the job, this is all about race. And what so many of you non-whites, and liberal whites do not understand if that this country is on the way to being polarized by race even worse than before the 1960s.

Are you crazy? The U.S. military is one of the most racist and hateful organizations that has ever exists. All of our wars of the last 50 years have been against persons of color (AKA brown-skinned poor people.)

Not all whites are angry. In fact, most are thrilled with President Obama's choice, not simply because Bolden's black but because he's so highly qualified.

Now there is a difference between most whites and Republican whites however, and I have a feeling that, by Monday, we'll be hearing about this from Mr. Limbaugh! This fits right into their narrative that President Obama's sole objective is to take America from white people and to give it to blacks!

if you mean the Party of No, yes, they will say this is a black appointment, but they do not represent all whites.

Competent Black Men in Positions of Great responsibility should show why affirmative action had many failures. The Black Men that were being chosen were more from the Michael Steele gene pool, just plain incompetent. Thus the GOP could argue it doesn't work and unfair to White Men. Happy they are proving their conspiracy within their party.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:15 PM on 05/23/2009

The GOP doesn't want to admit that whites in this country enjoy centuries of unearned privileges. This has to change if we are ever to move forward as a nation. Whites must give up their power and setup aside for people of color to lead.

I actually believe that no one needs to "give up" power. It is for all to share.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:23 PM on 05/23/2009

Rather than anyone stepping aside or giving up power, here's a thought. Find the most qualified person to do the job, and let him/her do it. Take color out of the conversation. The minute you put color in the conversation you yourself are acting in a prejudiced manner.

White women are the biggest beneficiaries of affirmative action. Why? Because of the social hierarchy of least threatening to the white male status quo. Feminism is played against minority civil rights causes both as buffer and comparative advantage for white men/women respectively. Witness the Democratic Primary and posters like AnnfromCA, PumaAnn or whatever her new alias is.

I would argue that Puma Ann is not a feminist because Sarah Palin does not support women's rights. Case in point - she wants rape victims to pay for rape kits. That is not a feminist position.

He was a member of the NASA Astronaut Corps until 1994 when he returned to active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps as the Deputy Commandant of Midshipmen at the Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland, effective June 27, 1994. In July 1997, he was assigned as the Deputy Commanding General, I MEF, Marine Forces, Pacific. From February to June 1998, he served as Commanding General, I MEF (FWD) in support of Operation Desert Thunder in Kuwait. In July 1998 he was promoted to his final rank of Major General and assumed his duties as the Deputy Commander, U.S. Forces, Japan.
Bolden then served as the Commanding General, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, serving from August 9, 2000 until August 2002. He retired in August 2004.

There is always someone better out there!

The fact that he left NASA in 1994 does not mean that he is less qualify; he did not leave NASA and go into retirement, he went into the Marine to pilot ships; I see him as a more qualified individual because he can interract not only within NASA but with other Armed forces agencies that NASA have to colloborate with on a continual bases on some research.
