CANNES, France — A film co-scripted by U.S.-Iranian journalist Roxana Saberi won a prize in one of the Cannes Film Festival competitions on Saturday.

"No One Knows About Persian Cats" won a special jury prize in the festival's Un Certain Regard competition.

The film is a lively look at Tehran's underground music scene and the risk of censorship and jail faced by Iranian musicians.

Saberi shares a screenplay credit on the film, which was directed and-co-written by her romantic partner, Bahman Ghobadi.

"Dogtooth," a film about an unusually isolated family by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, won the top prize in the Un Certain Regard competition, which focuses largely on new and emerging filmmakers from around the world.

Second prize went to Romanian director Corneliu Porumboiu's "Police, Adjective," while "The Father of My Children," by France's Mia Hansen-Love, also won a special prize.

Saberi, who worked for news outlets including U.S. National Public Radio and the BBC, was freed from an Iranian prison May 11 after serving four months of an eight-year sentence for allegedly spying for the United States.

Cannes' main competition prizes, including the coveted Palme d'Or, will be handed out Sunday.

"The film is a lively look at Tehran's underground music scene and the risk of censorship and jail faced by Iranian musicians."

Hopefully this music is better than the Black Cats and much of the ex-pat music. Though it is getting a lot better in recent years, or so I've read.

Awesome. Now how do we get that tiny little Korean guy with the big glasses to release our other two citizens?

she was not a co-script writer. Her name is mentioned in the credits section becaus the script was her boyfriend's and he wanted to show some affection to her by including her name there. Enough of this woman and her unattractive face with big mouth. the credit she gets is for her being a spy.

I love you Angie, but you don't really mean to say: "unless you ignore the truth, don't say anything at all"...do you?

OK, that’s it for me. I think I’m finished with all investigations of this young lady. I conclude that she in fact is a credible journalist, although her subject matter and how she approaches it raises some eyebrows. Her reporting is very analytical and provocative, but seems to offer little in terms of nonviolent approaches and alternative conflict resolutions. There is some mention of equal rights for women and things such as the need for education in Iran. But her overwhelming focus is on Iran’s government and Iran’s strategic options. With her ambitions, I wouldn’t be surprised if she attempted to reform Iran and run for political office. The other question is how far she would go in yielding to Washington’s and/or British demands. We all know that Iran has a long history in dealing with Washington and Britain in it’s pre-Islamic revolution years. She has been playing with fire.

Why is it that when people gain some level of attention that has to do with a political or justice issue and the person affected claims to be a voice of the oppressed, that the person seems to benefit personally far greater from the experience in terms of career and financial opportunities moreso than the "voice" or help they claim to be helping other people.

I'm not sure that Ms. Saberi is rich yet, nor necessarily will be. If however she is rewarded financially, she will have done far more to earn such rewards than such inane and worthless personalities as Hannity, Beck or Limbaugh.

If self promotion is what your talking about, she deserves nothing.

Truth be told, the independent film world is a playground for trust fund babies with very expensive cameras, editing equipment, connections and lots and lots of free time. That may not be her, but I'm willing to bet it might be the case with her "romantic partner."

I guess being both beautiful and famous is invitation for all sorts of criticism.

For everything she went through in Iran, she is going to make millions, just talking about her experience to the entire country thru documentaries, books and so much more. Whatever she releases to the general public will be an instant success for Saberi !

I don't agree. In three months nobody will remember her name. I doubt anyone will remember the name of the ship captain who was captured by Somali pirates either. The idea that everyone involved in an international incident automatically gets a million dollar book deal is false.

I look forward to seeing her in the leading role of "The Anais Nin Story."
