Gore Pushes CEOs To Back Climate Change Deal

COPENHAGEN — Climate-change heavyweights U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon and Nobel prize winner Al Gore urged more than 500 business leaders on Sunday to lend their corporate muscle to reaching a global deal on reducing greenhouse gases.

The CEOs of PepsiCo, Nestle, BP and other major world businesses began meeting in Copenhagen, where politicians will gather in December to negotiate a new U.N.-brokered climate treaty.

Despite the global financial crisis, both Ban and Gore said there was no time for delay in hashing out the specifics of how to cut greenhouse gases that contribute to warming the planet.

"We have to do it this year. Not next year. This year," Gore said. "The clock is ticking, because Mother Nature does not do bailouts."

The three-day World Business Summit on Climate Change is a precursor to the negotiations to determine what will succeed the Kyoto climate treaty that expires in 2012.

"Continuing to pour trillions of dollars into fossil-fuel subsidies is like investing in subprime real estate," Ban said. "Our carbon-based infrastructure is like a toxic asset that threatens the portfolio of global goods, from public health to food security."

A new global warming treaty would build on the Kyoto treaty's mixed success in requiring that 37 industrialized nations reduce greenhouse gas emissions an average of 5 percent below 1990 levels by 2012.

Gore said any of the ambitious treaty goals being discussed will depend on CEOs working out greener ways of doing business and governments reining in unrestricted pollution.

"The business community and the leaders of the world must go together to safeguard the world," he told a forum that even drew Queen Margrethe of Denmark.

Xie Zhenhua, vice chairman of China's national development and reform commission, pledged to play "a positive and a constructive" role to reach a global climate treaty, and already is putting in place its climate plan for 2015 and beyond.

"During negotiations, developed countries always hope that a future China may do much better and greater efforts on addressing climate change issues," he said.

Rajendra K. Pachauri, head of the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with Gore, said already "we are perhaps at the upper range" of predicted higher temperatures this century.

"We have a very short window of opportunity," he said. "If we want to limit temperature increase to about 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit), then emissions globally must peak by 2015."

About 300 anti-globalization activists marched Sunday toward the convention, heavily guarded by police. Some 40 teenage activists were handcuffed with plastic strips and detained after they were caught in woods nearby.

The police removed two water pistols from one of them; another was carried away by three officers.

Erik Rasmussen, the conference organizer, said business leaders are mulling specific and binding targets for reducing greenhouse gases within 10 years and 20 years that would be announced at the end of the conference.

Anders Eldrup, CEO of Danish state-controlled oil and gas group DONG Energy, said businesses face a big choice.

"There are two tracks being discussed now, one a tax on CO2 and a cap-and-trade," he said, leaning toward the carbon tax.

However, Connie Hedegaard, Denmark's climate minister, told The Associated Press the best solution is global limits on pollution blamed for global warming instead of a tax on carbon dioxide and other warming gases.

Hedegaard urged businesses to back such limits, called cap-and-trade, which require governments to issue pollution allowances, or permits, to businesses that could be traded.

"I would hope that they would sort of agree that some kind of cap and trade will be the most efficient tool to achieve what science tells us what we must achieve," she said. "A carbon tax _ you can just pay that tax _ but you must also have the caps so that you start innovating from there."

An emissions trading plan advanced in the U.S. Congress last week, increasing the likelihood that the full House of Representatives will for the first time address broad legislation to tackle climate change later this year.

Gore predicted it would pass the House, gain Senate approval and be signed into law by President Barack Obama.

The United States has said it is committed to reaching a deal in Copenhagen as long as other major polluters such as China and India do their part as well.

Maybe it is true for old one, who are tired from their duty.

We could solve all our economy problems, our dependency from foreign fuel if we will stop stupid recommendation provided by scientists, who advised Al Gore about global warming. Wind, solar cell, geothermal, nuclear power are disaster for environment.
Mr. President, fire Steven Chu and others supporters of Al Gore recommendation in Government.
As Democrat, as Republican for some reason make from science of global warming circus for debate.
If Democrat seeing only carbon dioxide as reason, Republican arguing about the same carbon dioxide. Republican is only diminishing role of mankind in producing carbon dioxide.
Please stop nonsense.
It is not only carbon dioxide or other GHG.
It is winds and their direction, which send hot air to cloud level.
It is reflection, which send short wave back to space.
It is huge convection forces.
It is cloud formation.
It oceans streams.
It is properties of water and ice.
It is water evaporation, which take a lot of energy on the ground level and send vapor as lighter gas to cloud level, where infrared radiation escapes to space. Mankind activities changed not only carbon dioxide, which is not main player in Nature, but only tilling of land changed reflection, convection forces, evaporation and cloud formation.
Claiming only carbon dioxide will direct our activities in wrong direction.
We need to use all natural properties to reduce effect of global warming especially cooling effects of water vapor, water droplet, water, and ice.

If carbon dioxide is main player in Nature we must follow Al Gore recommendation. “Save energy at home, choose energy efficient lighting, appliances when making new purchases, properly operate and maintain your appliances, heat and cool your house efficiently, insulate your house, conserve hot water, improve the efficiency of your home office, switch to green power’ telecommute from home, reduce air travel, consume less, buy things that last, recycle, don’t waste paper, bag your groceries and other purchases in reusable tote, compost, carry your own refillable bottle for water and other beverages, modify your diet to reduce less meat, buy local, purchase offset to neutralize your remaining emission.”
It is always good to save as much energy as we can, but simple calculations could show that demand for better living in the world many times bigger than our abilities to increase efficiency of our appliances, equipment etc.
Common sense of every person needs to command him travel expenses, use of paper or reusable tote, refillable bottle, his diet.
It is laughable to ask 6 billions people in the world to follow religious dogmas, which in reality can’t change something.
Fortunately we have others possibilities and unlimited energy sources.
All Vice Presidents, Presidents, Senators, actors, Prime Ministers, mass media need to take some basic Physics classes before speaking about global warming. I am not against freedom of speech. I am against freedom to extinguish fire by gasoline.
01:31 PM on 05/25/2009
It is not only carbon dioxide.
It is huge convection forces.
If human activities changed reflection and evaporation we because of that changed convection forces and power of winds and their directions.
We need integrate annual changes in all forces that can influent climate.
If we will use only carbon dioxide to explain everything we will help lazy scientists make their models, but who need this kind of simplification?
12:46 PM on 05/25/2009
It is not only carbon dioxide.
It is reflection, which send short wave back to space.
Human activities by growing crops for food production changed reflections of land all around the globe. Our roads, homes, power and industrial plants are doing the same.
Soot changed snow reflections during hours. Less reflection of direct sun radiation are changing temperature better than carbon dioxide.
11:58 AM on 05/25/2009
It is not only carbon dioxide.
It is winds and their direction, which send hot air to cloud level.
Al Gore as many others very famous persons in the world and mass media did not understand role of wind to cool the air. Wind energy evaporates a lot of water from any surfaces of rivers, lakes, seas, and oceans. It evaporates water from the grass, bushes and trees. Any uses of wind energy will reduce these cooling effects of wind.
Kinetic energy of the wind in the atmosphere send hot air from the land or water surface to the high level of atmosphere where it is easy for heat to escape to the space.
Kinetic energy of the wind met the small droplets of water in fog, clouds, and all green vegetables, especially in leaves of trees around all atmospheres on the Earth. These processes produce water vapor that invisible greenhouse gas, which always go up to cloud level and cool the Earth better than anything else.
11:49 AM on 05/25/2009
It is not only carbon dioxide. It is water vapor.
Scientists look at water vapor in most computers modeling as static element. It is mistake.
Molecular weight of water vapor is 18, nitrogen-28, oxigen-32, carbon dioxide-44. Water vapor is lighter than almost all gases and always going up to clouds level and above.
It takes 339 kcal of energy to evaporate 1 kg of water. It takes one kcal to heat one kg of water on 1º C.
In atmosphere we have water vapor, small droplet of fog, clouds and droplets of rain.
If you will look in dynamic water vapor actually cool the air by evaporation of water on ground level, evaporation of water droplets in atmosphere and by cloud formation.
Droplet of rain will solve carbon dioxide and others GHG and clean the air better than any conservation attempt to reduce emission. It is basic Physics.

Yes, BrettnCalgary, You are right about my English. As person who have BS in Physics I can tell you about mistakes of Al Gore.
“COPENHAGEN — Climate-change heavyweights U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon and Nobel prize winner Al Gore urged more than 500 business leaders on Sunday to lend their corporate muscle to reaching a global deal on reducing greenhouse gases.”
REDUCTION OF GHG WILL NOT CHANGE SITUATION WITH GLOBAL Warming.

Okay, now we're getting somewhere, we have established that you are a denial tr0ll. This is convincingly shown by your emphasis on "Al Gore", if you were really a foreign language PhD in a climate discipline you would be barely aware of Gores' existence. Next, lets try and make sense of your denial talking points so they can be easily debunked.

You need some VERY CONVINCING help on the lobbying front Mr. Gore, VERY CONVINCING. Perhaps some behind the scenes Offers they can't refuse. Perhaps a few broken arms. Some favourite horse heads in bed with them in the morning. The CESSPOOL OF GREED that is Washington and its lobbying army is THE PROBLEM. Change that mindset of GREED and it changes WASHINGTON ELECTED OFFICIALS who in turn can CHANGE THE WORLD. But good luck with all of that unless you have some DIVINE INTERVENTION, A DEAL WITH THE MOBS AROUND THE WORLD, OR THE HELP OF BEINGS FROM ANOTHER WORLD.

As I see as the most dangerous Al Gore achievement that mass media almost agreed with his point: “…when 98 percent of the scientists in a given field share one view and 2 percent disagree, both viewpoints are sometimes presented in a format in which each appears equally credible.” Here politician’s point of view is “winning, if percentage prevail.”
In science most often genius of one man confront millions, who think different. Al Gore wrote about Galileo: “Even he had had to bend to the convention of his day.
Ironically with his percentages as making decisions, who are right, he came close to judges of Galileo.
“Indeed, sometimes the remaining uncertainties are cynically used by partisans of the status quo for the express purpose of preventing the coalescence of public support for action.”

But imagine that Al Gore made mistake, how smart will be public support for action?
And I am insisting that he made mistakes. He confirm that by his own statements.

Hey liecatcher, you're dealing in gross over generalizations. Catch your own lies first. The CEO (Mike Splinter - a Republican) of the company I work for, Applied Materials, has fully committed our Fortune 500 company to a plan for reducing our carbon footprint and we are moving forward on it with full funding. We are also the number one purchaser energy from alternative sources from our local power company. Applied has a long history of social activism. We consistently contribute around 250,000 pounds of food to Second Harvest each year and support other local charities and cultural activities. So we are in fact feeding children and contributing to mainstreets everywhere we have offices - which happens to be globally. There are many similar corporations in the Silicon Valley. Not all corporations are cut from the same cloth. You need to update your outdated worldview.
