LONDON -- Surprise singing sensation Susan Boyle made a new television appearance, showcasing once again her soaring voice _ but refusing to compromise on the frumpy look that made her an Internet sensation.

The shy church volunteer gave a rousing, but occasionally nervous, performance on the "American Idol"-style show "Britain's Got Talent," with a version of the song "Memory" from the musical "Cats."

Members of the public voting in a telephone poll picked her as the best of eight performers who appeared Sunday, meaning she will sing again in the contest's final next Saturday.

Flashing a broad smile, Boyle danced in delight as results were announced and said she had relished the chance to perform. "Fantastic, absolutely fantastic," she said. "What pressure? I've really enjoyed myself tonight."

Wearing a plum colored beaded dress _ and a touch more makeup than during her last performance _ but with the same unruly shock of hair, Boyle overcame early jitters to deliver a powerful vocal.

Producers said the 47-year-old's appearance was being posted on the Internet almost immediately, after about 60 million people watched her last performance via YouTube.

In her first performance last month, judges who'd raised eyebrows at Boyle's dowdy image were won over by her bold voice and surprisingly confident performance of "I Dreamed a Dream" from the musical "Les Miserables." The sometimes awkward looking Scot won praise from celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey and Demi Moore, and even won a mention in her favorite cartoon "The Simpsons."

On Sunday, the show's judges and audience rose to their feet to applaud, but those posting comments to the Twitter Web site appeared divided. While some hailed her performance, others appeared underwhelmed.

Bookmaker William Hill has made her a runaway favorite to win on May 30.

Contestants are competing to perform at Britain's annual Royal Variety Show _ attended by members of the royal family _ and win a 100,000 pound ($159,000) prize.

The singer, who lives alone with her cat Pebbles in one of Scotland's poorest regions, said before Sunday's performance that she wouldn't transform her appearance. "I just want people to see me for who I am, and do my best at singing the song, that's what I am focusing on," she said.

Boyle, who says she's never been kissed, grew up the youngest of nine children in Blackburn, a community of 4,750 people 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of Edinburgh, in Scotland, and a district blighted by unemployment and crime. She suffered learning difficulties as a child and was bullied by other children.

As an adult, she's struggled for work but had been a regular on her local karaoke circuit and performed in church choirs.

In an interview with The Associated Press at her home last month, she said the death of her mother had inspired her to enter the TV talent show.

"I wanted to show her I could do something with my life," Boyle said.

So, please remind me: Is Susan Boyle being evaluated for her talent?

Or is it for whether or not she can hold up under the kind of publicity pressure that none, NONE, of us could withstand any more gracefully?

I refuse to listen to this. As a long term piano teacher, at one point I had to hear about 50% of my pupils playing this junk by a Puccini wanabee. Susan really needs an adviser on her choice of repertory.

And as for her "vocabulary", who does she think she is: Charlotte Church?

Susan Boyle the potty mouthed Scottish songbird is known as Rambo in her home town because of her violent temper.

Susan was under a lot of pressure tonight with the whole world watching, over 100 million youtube hits and interviews all over the place and more clammering I can't imagine many in her shoes who would not be nervous but she showed her professionalism when she recovered and sang her heart out. A Cinderella story, yes and a lovely one for a lovely lady indeed. Paul Potts won big and so will Susan. Can't wait for her first cd!

It will be her 2nd cd.
In 1999 she recorded "Cry Me a River" for a charity CD funded by the local council to commemorate the Millennium. Also, in 1999, Boyle used "all her savings" to pay for a professionally cut demo tape, which she later sent to record companies, radio talent competitions, local and national TV; Boyle gave away a few copies to her close friends. The demo tape consisted of her versions of "Cry Me a River" and "Killing Me Softly with His Song" and was released onto the Internet after her audition.

She's been at this for a long time.

Hardly a professional debut, the first CD -

You've made it clear that you don't care for her, maybe you should give it a rest now.

Have been reading some British newspaper chat. Seems Ms. Boyle had a cold and sore throat the night of the performance. That's why she says her voice cracked at the start and her breathing was off.

What was really funny were all the negative comments about Americans being responsible for the SuBo craze. We're so crass and tasteless, you know. (Oh really? Did anyone catch daredevil Nick Hell's performance on BGT? Bluuurrrggghhh )

This was a disappointing performance and the judges gave her a pass. Arrangement was weak, and she was passionless in her delivery. The comparisons to Elaine Paige are ridiculous. Elaine owns this song, and is the only one who really understands it and feels it when she performs it. (Watch her videos on Youtube to see how it's done) I had the privilege of seeing Elaine perform here in the desert twice in the past year, and can assure you, Susan Boyle is no Elaine Paige!

This is really a matter of individual taste. To my eyes and ears, Elaine Page overacts this piece to the point of embarrassment. I hate to look at all the theatrics. I rather like the straight up rendition that Susan Boyle sang. Her voice is excellent - objectively, it's strong. It will only improve as she becomes more professional.

I don't understand the technical nuances of singing, but I do know that as soon as Susan Boyle opens her mouth, I tear up and she touches something deep within me. Very few technically perfect singers have this effect on me. I don';t need any more from her. This is enough.

I agree. As I listened to her voice soar in confidence in the 2nd part of this song the tears just welled up to my eyes. Dont know exactly why. But somehow it touches one deep inside - in a beautiful way. Maybe it's the pure and unadorned beauty of her voice. "A Star is Born". What a moment!.

Susan gave a excslusive interview she is far from stupid and says she will remain true to herself, she is suprised at the comotion she caused am so am I, yea she can sing, if ya like opera but what is the big deal is it because of her looks? If she was just normal would we still be talking bout her? heres the interview http://movies09.com/susan-boyle-speaks.php Im not impressed but here I am commenting on her so I guess im part of the problem

First of all Susan does NOT sing opera.

Gregg Pritchard does and he is still in the running - he sings next in the 5th semi-final which will probably be on Friday.

Texas4Obama, you certainly have fallen for Gregg Pritchard, haven't you? I'd call you a passionate fan if ever there were one. I love that style of singing too, but Gregg is as unpolished as you claim Susan Boyle to be when you compare him to Philippe Jaroussky.

So, why don't we all agree to disagree and like who we like and not criticize each others' choices?

Gregg Pritchard, "opera"??? I don't think so. Gregg is not good enough. Gregg has a nice personality, and good stage presence; I'll give him that (even though I cannot stand his haircut, but that's personal choice). But, vocally, he is NOT polished enough.

I'm surprised that people call Susan's singing style opera. Can people really be that culturally ignorant? I guess so. All these stupid comments from all these impossibly perfect and so called "beautiful people". Susan looks like most of the world to me. She's not or was not a celebrity when she started this and she doesn't want to look like one. She's natural looking and doesn't she have beautiful skin. I think she's perfectly lovely. Paige is no beauty and I can't imagine what she'd look without makeup. Susan is perfect the way she is and happy and has a wonderful personality. There is a world and a life for those of us over 40 and if you aren't yet, I promise you the day will come or you won't be around. In fact being over 40 is liberating.

Susan's voice and presentation seem great to me, but I am not an expert. I think she looked much prettier this time out. Her "story" appeals to so many; what could be better, in these times?

Have you seen the other acts on Britain's got Talent? Susan Boyle is much, much better than the other people competing. I don't know how she is as a professional singer, but the other acts are not that great.
There are some pretty good dance acts and some kids who seem to have potential talent, but I was surprised by how MUCH better she is than anyone else.

Susan Boyle’s very shaky “Memory†start - and her very resounding finish - only adds to the story. We all got to see and hear what she has gone through her entire life. In one song.

And make no mistake, this IS a story. And we all love good stories.

Stop making comparisons to other trained, well-established singers - and start making comparisons to other great, well-established stories.

This is “Cinderella†and “Shrek†in real life. It is a story with obvious World-Wide appeal, and brings us all together - from every nation - and brings us all back to our hopeful childhoods.

A time when we all had dreams, and we all loved good stories with happy endings.

So stop debating whether the slippers should have been Emerald instead of Ruby, and simply give in and enjoy the wizardry of a great story.
