LOS ANGELES — Mel Gibson and his girlfriend, Russian musician Oksana Grigorieva, are expecting a baby, only six weeks after his wife filed for divorce.

Gibson confirmed that 39-year-old Grigorieva is pregnant on Monday night's airing of NBC's "Tonight" show with Jay Leno.

"This is true, we're having a child," Gibson said. The baby will be his eighth.

Gibson's wife, Robyn, cited irreconcilable differences in her April 13 divorce petition to end their marriage of 28 years.

The 53-year-old Oscar winner has seven children with Robyn, but the couple have been separated for almost three years.

Teased by Leno about having so many children, Gibson said, "I guess I'm Octomel now."

Flaunting and joking about the whole situation on a talk show is pretty obnoxious. Maybe show a little consideration towards his family by keeping it low key? His kids must despise him.

I used to like Mel, now not so much. His antics in the past few years show a ugly side to the man.

I'm no prude, but I was shocked when the audience applauded and cheered at the news his girlfriend is expecting.

As if Mel's first set of 7 kids was not enough to keep him busy as a father. Hey, start all over again. Give it 10 years, and I think we'll start seeing a flood of tell all books about life with Mel.

real1234: The nature of the question from Leno was just as emotionally detached as Gibson's answer. "Do you know what it's going to be?" To refer to the unborn child as an "it" makes it clear that Leno really doesn't see it as a human being yet. So Gibson's response was both funny and perhaps telling of how he sees it as being a human in development and that he will love the child, male or female. (Remains to be seen.) What is he like as a father to his already living 7-children? I don't know and am not likely to do the research.

Conservatives have a hard time with the concept of hypocrisy. They fall victim to it like the rest us of course, many don't seem to understand it at all. They demand one thing, usually dropping God's name somewhere along the line, and then act direct in contradiction to what they were preaching about. Of course, we also have the riff on this behavior, acting one way and then denouncing others when they act the same way. The thing that gets me is that they seem to lack even an awareness of concept and at the same time espouse a belief in Jesus. Jesus had choice things to say about hypocrisy, the self righteous seem to ignore it.

I never agree with you on anything...but on this I do.

Funny how no one else on this thread struggles with life.

I struggle with life which is why the only thing I typically criticise others for is either hypocracy or being judgmental. We all make mistakes. Or if you are a Christian you might say sins.

I don't even know if I should "judge" judgmentalism. To some degree, who am I to say.

I'm a lib but have to agree. Mention Mel Gibson on this site and the long knives come out. It's amazing how much hatred there is for the man. I suspect that it has little to do with religion and much to do with envy.

Perhaps for the men.

Truly, For some who dislike religion, they enjoy holding him up as a bad example of religion. I just have a problem with someone who very much preaches one thing and lives another. I am not talking about quietly living your life and making mistakes. I mean putting yourself out there as the world's most passionate Catholic and then joking on TV about your child with your unwed girlfriend when not divoced in the eyes of the church.. In other posts you have said - he's been separated three years. sure ok. But not okay for the guy who wears his Catholisism on his sleeve. I am Catholic by the way. So I am not anti-religious. Just anti-hypocracy.

wrong again. mel gibson is the last person on earth I would envy for any reason. it does have to do with religion though. and it is not so much hate as pity and disgust

maggiee; Gibson seems to have gotten it half-right, according to my understanding of he Catholic church. What does the church say about separation and divorce? I know a lot of Catholics have gotten annulments in the past, some for a fee, in order to skirt the adultry/divorce issue.

The Passion Of The Christ was another example of Gibson's fetish for showing bleeding and mutilated flesh. He's disturbed.

Ignore the haterz here, Mel.

Most of it is driven by envy.

You're handsome, successful as both actor and director, and filthy stinking rich as a result.

Okay, so you have some wacky religious beliefs. But then aren't all religions wacky?

We are all weak in passions of the flesh....that's understandable...Mel just has more opportunity by being filthy rich and good looking. Its the "high horse" many believers get on...that irks so many...until the horse throws them.

All I'm saying is there are far worthier targets of our side's self-righteous outrage than Mel. Pick any GOP politician, talking head, or televangelist.

Mel is pretty benign in contrast.

Biff Baxter: "all religions wacky?" From what you say, it looks like you may consider yourself to be one of the "sane" people on the planet who "know" what the truth is about eternity and the afterlife.
Religions, as a whole, are very positive influences on peoples' lives, if they follow the tenets of the religion as guides on how to manage their lives and relationships. Nothing Wacky abut that to me.
If you think having a spiritual connection and faith in something is wacky...tell me honestly, isn't that just as valid from one of the believers who might be looking at you and feeling that you are wacky because you are "lost" in their eyes.
Judging other peoples' spirituality is wacky to me because no one has the absolute answer until they are unable to report back. (they're dead)

I don't believe I have ever commented negatively on any celebrity''s personnal life. But I just don't get how he portrays himself as this unbelieveble Catholic - his passion of Christ movie, his own church and behave so cavalierly about the end of his marriage and having a baby with this women. According to the Church he loves, he can't marry her.

Or am I confused and he started his own church / religion. As to those who dislike religion, that's not the point, he is the one carrying on about his religious beliefs.

Perhaps one of the many good reasons so many of us do dislike religion is the pervasive and in-your-face 'do as I say, not as I do' attitudes and messages we get from the religiously zealous from high profile bible-beaters like Gibson all the way down to the thumper in the next cubicle at work.

BN2112: Interesting how people can take to disliking RELIGIONS, when it is the individual interpretations of religion that we see. Many religion haters have never read anything of the very people in those religions. Ignorance and fear are the root-cause of most hatred and since, without "faith" no one has the true answers and "faith" at its root level truly means; "I don't really know, but I will stake my life on my "belief" that it is true"
