YOKOHAMA, Japan — Jose Canseco came out swinging but didn't last long in his debut in mixed martial arts.

The former Oakland A's slugger was defeated by South Korean super heavyweight Hong Man Choi by a knockout just 1 minute, 17 seconds into the first round at Yokohama Arena.

The referee stopped the fight when the 7-foot-2, 330-pound Choi knocked Canseco to the mat and started punching his head.

"That's a big man," Canseco said after the fight. "I ran into one of his left jabs and that almost knocked me out. You have no idea how scary it was facing a man that big."

Canseco did land the first blow with a right to the upper body of Choi but that was all the damage he could inflict on the Korean giant.

Shortly into the fight, Canseco hurt his right knee and was unable to do much after that.

"I hurt my knee back home real bad but I didn't want to disappoint the fans," Canseco said. "I knew that at some point during the fight my knee was going to give out and once I was down I knew I wasn't going to get up. He's just too heavy to move."

Canseco came into the arena to "Wild Thing" with a baseball bat on his shoulder. The way things turned out, he probably should have kept the bat.

He took a few swings of the bat after the fight was over and was helped out of the ring by his girlfriend, Heidi Northcott.

Canseco, who hit 462 home runs over 17 seasons in the major leagues, has had several fights inside the ring since leaving baseball but has never taken on professional fighters like Choi, who improved to 2-2 in MMA.

He boxed Danny Bonaduce, a former "Partridge Family" child star, to a draw in a celebrity match in January. The 1988 AL MVP, who named alleged steroid abusers like himself in his two books, lost to former Philadelphia Eagle Vai Sikahema in his first foray into celebrity boxing.

By his acknowledgment, the baseball outcast needs the money. It's one reason why Canseco has accepted a wide variety of offbeat jobs to make ends meet.

He said he will work on getting his knee back in shape before taking on any more fights.

"I have no idea if I'll do this again," Canseco said. "I've gotta get my knee better before I commit to anything like this."

"I hurt my knee..." I've used that one once or twice.

You know, Jose Canseco is arrogant. He's cocky and he's slightly obnoxious.

But the fact is, he told the truth about Major League Baseball's steroid problem while MLB did nothing but put on a sham show and blackballed him for speaking truth. The man was ruined simply because it was an inconvient truth he told. Now Clemens, Rodriguez, Palmiero, Tejada, Sosa, Bonds all prove him right.

The fact that he has been relagated to doing this type of stuff just to survive is really a sad, sad legacy on MLB and no incentive for anyone to tell the truth when they see what happens to the whistleblower.

He was a whistle blower for monetary gains only. Sorry he is not your knight in shining honor.

I don't know much at all about his baseball career - I've never been a baseball fan.

However, anyone that follows MMA (and I'm sure Jose himself) knew that he didn't stand a chance. Choi is a K-1 Kickboxer, and has been in the ring with the #1 heavyweight MMA fighter in the world (Fedor Emelianenko). Nobody made this fight happen thinking Jose would win. It's just something they like to do in Japan - these totally unrealistic matches. I've seen a 170 lb fighter take on a 400 lb + fighter, although I've forgotten their names. The little guy won by the way!

Anyway, Jose did this for the money - not because he thought he could win.

Puh-lease. Even if you are making a joke, in MMA steroids are sooo illegal. The UFC (I know, not what Conseco was fighting in, BUT) tests fighters before a match. If they find steroids in your system, you are not allowed to fight. YOU COULD KILL SOMEONE! http://www.isteroids.com/steroids-mma/

Stephen Bonnar was suspended for nine months and had to pay a $5,000 fine for using steroids. Even though he said it was for an injury, not to necessarily enhance his performance. http://www.mmaworld.org/showthread.php?t=1054

Steroids won't be "rocking" MMA anytime soon.

that wasn't really even MMA...
Hong Man Choi is a kickboxer that lost to Fedor by armbar (Fedor only weighs around 230lbs)
Canseco is a karate guy who said he doesn't really know how to grapple.
Basically this was an ugly kickboxing match that ended when Canseco fell to the ground and was pounded out by a guy who outweighs him by 100 lbs (basically looked like UFC 1)

Wow, Choi Hong Man is one terrifying specimen of humanity, not to mention far and away the hugest Korean I have ever seen in my life! AND a martial arts expert at that!

Canseco's lucky he walked away from this one...

Just like most baseball players, Canseco has drastically overestimated his physical talents.

Probably thought steroids would get him through that fight too.

Hasn't this guy failed in everything he's done since leaving baseball?

No. He succeeded in shining a light on MLB's rampant steroid usage by its players, and the general acceptance of this by the league and its owners.

don't think for a second he sold out players for using steroids because he thought it was "the right thing to do." he did it because he wanted the attention and the money that a book deal would guarantee.

canseco has absolutely no class

When you box Danny Bonaduce and end up in a draw...then decide to go into the ring against a 7'2", 330 lb. Korean martial arts pro...isn't that certifiable insanity?

Typical baseball player; can't perform with an injury most workers would laugh off. Sprained pinky? Oooohhh: that's a month off.

Yeah it was his knee. Not his park district-level martial arts skills, or the fact he never should have been in there in the first place. Or the fact he 'limped' out of the ring without a visible scratch, Rihanna having survived a tougher beat-down than this. Canseco, just go away.
