LOS ANGELES — A few overeager AT&T employees brought demo phones to "American Idol" viewing parties in Arkansas and helped fans text their votes, but their actions did not affect the outcome between native son Kris Allen and Adam Lambert, the company said Wednesday.

Allen, 23, of Conway, Ark., won by an undisclosed margin over Lambert, 27, of San Diego, a powerful singer who'd been cast by the show's judges as the front-runner. Host Ryan Seacrest said nearly 100 million votes were sent by phone or text message after last Tuesday's final performance, but did not mention how those votes were divided.

While anyone in the United States could phone in votes, only AT&T customers were allowed to text.

About 20 phones were brought to two separate parties in Arkansas, and two of those phones were capable of sending multiple votes by so-called "power texting," a person familiar with the gatherings said. A second person, with knowledge of the voting results, said Allen won by a large enough margin that a handful of voters could not have swayed the outcome.

Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment on the voting process or the Arkansas parties.

"Idol" prohibits "power voting" by text or phone, and has internal safeguards against the practice.

In a joint statement, Fox and producer FremantleMedia said the results were "fair, accurate and verified" by an independent, third-party monitor to protect the integrity of the voting process. "In no way did any individuals unfairly influence the outcome of the competition."

"Kris Allen is, without a doubt, the American Idol," Fox and FremantleMedia said.

According to AT&T, "a few local AT&T employees" were invited to attend local viewing parties in Arkansas for the "American Idol" finale, parties the company said were similar to other, "countless" ones held in "homes, bars and other public places" nationwide.

"Caught up in the enthusiasm of rooting for their hometown contestant, they brought a small number of demo phones with them and provided texting tutorials to those who were interested," AT&T said in its statement.

Dallas-based AT&T, the country's largest telecommunications company, is one of the show's main sponsors, though it did not sponsor the parties in question.

"Going forward, we will make sure our employees understand our sponsorship celebrates the competition, not individual contestants. That said, it's quite a leap to suggest that a few individuals could have impacted the final results," the company said.

An AT&T spokesman declined to address how many employees were invited or how many people attended the Arkansas parties.

One of the parties attended by AT&T was at the University of Central Arkansas' Estes Stadium, with about 2,000 people in attendance, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported last week. The paper said display phones and company representatives were on hand to teach multiple "power texting" there, with phones and representatives also available at a watch party at the Peabody Little Rock hotel.

Sonja Keith, part of the "Kris Allen Kick Awesome Task Force" that helped organize watch parties, said she contacted AT&T about coming to the party at the stadium in Conway because she'd heard some people were having difficulty getting through on the toll-free number.

"A suggestion was made that we needed to get in touch with the phone carriers to see if there was a problem _ if there was something that they could do to ensure that our calls were getting through."

Keith said the business was one of many that participated at the various events held throughout the competition, and did so with "good intentions."

"I don't think anybody was trying to do anything underhanded or be unfair. I would think that the people in San Diego (Lambert's hometown) have the same resources available to them that the people in Conway do. I don't know that they were as organized as we were in terms of their support."

"Idol" has been inconsistent in its disclosure of vote totals: Last year, Seacrest said during the finale that 12 million votes was the difference between winner David Cook and runner-up David Archuleta. Other results have been vaguely referenced as "close," while some _ like this year's finale _ have not been officially addressed at all.

For his part, Lambert said he didn't know the results of the final vote, and "didn't ask." But he was more suspicious of the "Gokey factor" _ the migration of church leader Danny Gokey's votes to the more conservative Allen _ than any kind of grassroots effort.

"I knew that (losing) was a possibility," Lambert said Tuesday. "I knew that Kris had just as much of a chance as I did. You know, it was gonna come down to the two of us, and the people that had been voting for more of the conservative choices up until then were probably going to default more to Kris than to me."

this is a classic example of why we should never allow any kind of "electronic" or "online" voting to infiltrate our political system !!!

It does not matter that the votes would not have changed the outcome...the issue is that they played favorites and supported Kris over Adam. That is not cool and wreaks of impropriety. ATT can down play it all they want, the fact remains is they were wrong, they should admit it, be penalized for it, have to make restitution, take a class in business ethics, and be fined.

More drama, drama, drama from you Ms. Elber

A statement from Fox bosses reads, "Fox and the producers of 'American Idol' are absolutely certain that the results of this competition are fair, accurate and verified. Kris Allen is, without a doubt, the American Idol. We have an independent third-party monitoring procedure in place to ensure the integrity of the voting process. In no way did any individuals unfairly influence the outcome of the competition."

And AT&T execs are adamant that the extra votes did not hamper Lambert's chances of success.

Fox is happy, A T & T is happy, Kris and Adam are happy. They will all live happily ever after.

poor kris allen. he couldnt deny that what at&t had done was wrong. he could only say he wasnt a part of it.

well, kiddo, you benefited from it. sorry but your win is tainted.

TPTB are adamant that this didn't change the outcome. Even if he garnered a million extra votes out of it, if the margin was two million then it made no difference. Unless someone can show some numbers proving that Kris would have lost without those votes, everyone needs to shut the hell up about it.

cheating is cheating. it's wrong. if you pass an exam and cheated one item but would still pass it by getting other items correctly, your exam would still be nullified.

100 people could easily have made half a million votes. who really knows what the real numbers are? at&t admitted there was cheating. the burden of proof is now with fox and at&t to show us the numbers.

Sorry Masha, even if you brought 1000 phones to those parties, that would not be enough to sway the votes. Get real, Adam has good tone to his voice when he isn't wailing, but that Kris was the most improved singer on the show.

Take Adam's look out of the picture and you will agree with me on that. Look back and the show and close your eyes and listen to both of them and you will say, you know, you are right, Kris was the better singer.

So for you to say that his win was tainted is a big mis-statement.

AI learned one thing this season, give it to the guy that impressed the judges or you'll have hell to pay from the fans.

they had kris and adam together this morning on KNBC. kris performed and was luke-warm. adam came on and killed it, screams whoops shrieks from the audience. the worst and most revealing part was the interview and the interviewer. you would have to see it to believe it.

It's amazing to me how many people who don't care about Idol nevertheless take the time to read and comment about it.

Get a clue, folks! All this "reality" show "competition" is just as fake and scripted as pro wrestling. Take a walk or ride a bike instead of watching this stuff - you'll live longer.

It would be simple enough for AT&T to open up the voting records, show where the votes came from geographically and at what time and how many from each number. And/or compare the text votes vs the voice votes and see if the text voting was significantly slanted to one contestant or the other. Admitting that cheating happened and then saying the voting was fair is asinine.

It's Fox (Faux) so I'm not surprised...but I am surprised about AT&T It was unfair that fans of one contestant were given “free” access to texting & instructions on how to power text. Perhaps the outcome would have been the same had this not happened but we will never know for sure. This shows a strong lack of integrity on the part of AT&T (and American Idol.) I certainly will not bother to vote next season (if I decide to watch) as the voting process is unfair.

This fisaco with Kris and Adam and American Idol is just another example of AT&T's arrogance as a company and mediocrity in service.

Here's another example:

AT&T is making it a practice to strongarm Apple into denying unique, innovative, useful software on its iPhones access to its 3G network. The reason? AT&T is paranoid these apps will expose their mediocre, ill-equipped, inferior infrastructure. AT&T charges for "unlimited" data plans, knowing full well most will never come close to using a fraction of what their system is capable, but freaks out the moment iPhone users DARE to start using the data bandwidth they've been promised and have been paying for.

For instance, Slingplayer for iPhone came out, an app that will take the signal from your home receiver/DVR and filter it through the internet to your device, i.e. live or recorded t.v. on your iPhone. Slingplayer has been available on BlackBerry and other phones for years through 3G. If you bought an AT&T aircard and hooked it to your laptop, you could use the Slingplayer through AT&T 3G. AT&T itself has a service called Uverse coming out that allegedly does exactly the same thing as Slingplayer. But AT&T persuaded Apple to make it WiFi only, thus denying millions of users options that have been available on their system on other phones for years.

AT&T is a nasty monolith, skirting towards antitrust lawsuits and becoming a laughing stock.

Wow, such "outrage"! The fact that the public "votes" by calling a phone number is so open to manipulation that it is a foregone conclusion that the results can be skewed by special interest groups who have been organized to vote for one performer or another. What a shocker that is.
