LOS ANGELES — A few overeager AT&T employees brought demo phones to "American Idol" viewing parties in Arkansas and helped fans text their votes, but their actions did not affect the outcome between native son Kris Allen and Adam Lambert, the company said Wednesday.

Allen, 23, of Conway, Ark., won by an undisclosed margin over Lambert, 27, of San Diego, a powerful singer who'd been cast by the show's judges as the front-runner. Host Ryan Seacrest said nearly 100 million votes were sent by phone or text message after last Tuesday's final performance, but did not mention how those votes were divided.

While anyone in the United States could phone in votes, only AT&T customers were allowed to text.

About 20 phones were brought to two separate parties in Arkansas, and two of those phones were capable of sending multiple votes by so-called "power texting," a person familiar with the gatherings said. A second person, with knowledge of the voting results, said Allen won by a large enough margin that a handful of voters could not have swayed the outcome.

Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment on the voting process or the Arkansas parties.

"Idol" prohibits "power voting" by text or phone, and has internal safeguards against the practice.

In a joint statement, Fox and producer FremantleMedia said the results were "fair, accurate and verified" by an independent, third-party monitor to protect the integrity of the voting process. "In no way did any individuals unfairly influence the outcome of the competition."

"Kris Allen is, without a doubt, the American Idol," Fox and FremantleMedia said.

According to AT&T, "a few local AT&T employees" were invited to attend local viewing parties in Arkansas for the "American Idol" finale, parties the company said were similar to other, "countless" ones held in "homes, bars and other public places" nationwide.

"Caught up in the enthusiasm of rooting for their hometown contestant, they brought a small number of demo phones with them and provided texting tutorials to those who were interested," AT&T said in its statement.

Dallas-based AT&T, the country's largest telecommunications company, is one of the show's main sponsors, though it did not sponsor the parties in question.

"Going forward, we will make sure our employees understand our sponsorship celebrates the competition, not individual contestants. That said, it's quite a leap to suggest that a few individuals could have impacted the final results," the company said.

An AT&T spokesman declined to address how many employees were invited or how many people attended the Arkansas parties.

One of the parties attended by AT&T was at the University of Central Arkansas' Estes Stadium, with about 2,000 people in attendance, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported last week. The paper said display phones and company representatives were on hand to teach multiple "power texting" there, with phones and representatives also available at a watch party at the Peabody Little Rock hotel.

Sonja Keith, part of the "Kris Allen Kick Awesome Task Force" that helped organize watch parties, said she contacted AT&T about coming to the party at the stadium in Conway because she'd heard some people were having difficulty getting through on the toll-free number.

"A suggestion was made that we needed to get in touch with the phone carriers to see if there was a problem _ if there was something that they could do to ensure that our calls were getting through."

Keith said the business was one of many that participated at the various events held throughout the competition, and did so with "good intentions."

"I don't think anybody was trying to do anything underhanded or be unfair. I would think that the people in San Diego (Lambert's hometown) have the same resources available to them that the people in Conway do. I don't know that they were as organized as we were in terms of their support."

"Idol" has been inconsistent in its disclosure of vote totals: Last year, Seacrest said during the finale that 12 million votes was the difference between winner David Cook and runner-up David Archuleta. Other results have been vaguely referenced as "close," while some _ like this year's finale _ have not been officially addressed at all.

For his part, Lambert said he didn't know the results of the final vote, and "didn't ask." But he was more suspicious of the "Gokey factor" _ the migration of church leader Danny Gokey's votes to the more conservative Allen _ than any kind of grassroots effort.

"I knew that (losing) was a possibility," Lambert said Tuesday. "I knew that Kris had just as much of a chance as I did. You know, it was gonna come down to the two of us, and the people that had been voting for more of the conservative choices up until then were probably going to default more to Kris than to me."

This is so disgusting, the fact AT & T, a major corporate sponsor of American Idol, helped the Kris Allen camp. His "win" will forever be tainted.

What's more disgusting is how can Idol say the results are verified? How do they know how many votes were cast for Allen as a result of the 20 AT & T phones and the power-texting lessons? And why aren't we getting solid numbers about votes for each contestant.

Get real everybody. FOX-American Idol aren't going to change their tune just because AT & T's involvement was uncovered. Everyone knows Adam Lambert was ripped off - on pure fansites, comments and other online feedback alone, he had 10 times the fan base of Allen. Just compare the number of comments on AI's official sites on Adam Lambert songs to comments on Kris Allen songs. And why would Regis and Kelly give more than half their hour-long show to Adam, compared to a fraction of that to Kris, if Adam wasn't the most popular.

Adam has remained grounded and focused. He says he used Idol to showcase his awesome talents, and really, who wins only matters for a short time when the Idol PR machine is in full gear. Adam will win in the long term because he's the most talented, has charisma and is an honest soul.

Anyone saying it's time to "just move on" can look back at so many injustices that were left to just "go away."

"How do they know how many votes were cast for Allen as a result of the 20 AT & T phones and the power-texting lessons?"

There's a thing called "caller ID", which will indicate what phone was used to call them.

"And why aren't we getting solid numbers about votes for each contestant."

They generally don't release vote counts. Nothing new.

"Everyone knows Adam Lambert was ripped off"

No, he got less votes. He lost fairly.

"on pure fansites, comments and other online feedback alone, he had 10 times the fan base of Allen."

Perhaps Adam's fans are younger and more likely to be online commenting about this stuff.

"And why would Regis and Kelly give more than half their hour-long show to Adam, compared to a fraction of that to Kris, if Adam wasn't the most popular."

The ultimate arbiters of truth -- Regis and Kelly.

"Adam will win in the long term because he's the most talented, has charisma and is an honest soul."

Here's the sad thing -- Kris plays guitar and piano. Kris help the other contestants with their performances, and by all accounts knows an awful lot about music. He's performances have been diverse and impressive. But somehow he is undeserving.

Look, Adam's Led Zeppelin (or 80s hair band) scream is top-notch -- that's not a back-handed compliment, he's genuinely good at it. But the voters preferred the diversity of Kris' talents. Sorry!

What's an "honest soul" anyway?

I think that no one is as modest as Kris claims to be, if he was he would have never even been on the show. He is just a wimpy guy.

So what?

Did this keep our economy from being turnedovertosocialsists?

Did this keep North Korea from getting nuclear technology in the 90's?

Did this stop the take over of industry by certain parties?

It is a flipping TV show

Yes, it's a flipping TV show, but so are game shows, and in the '50s Congress investigated the fixing of those shows and passed a law prohibiting the attempted manipulation of results from game shows and other contests. Since AT&T is a major sponsor of American Idol, what they did is illegal, regardless of whether or not it affected the final outcome.

So we should just ignore all other social problems, criminal problems, eithical and moral issues until we solve the big ones.

Socialists? Seriously dude, do you even know what that word means? And for that matter, what is so darn bad about socialism, huh? You have a problem with everyone coming together to support the whole society instead of each individual competing with every other individual for resources and status? What is wrong with you?

I bet he is getting socialist help as we speak. I hope that his home never catches on fire because the Fire Department is a socialist program. Hope that he never loses his job because unemployment is a socialist program. Shall I go on? Hope your home never gets broken into because the Police Department is a socialist program. Oh and medi-care and Medi-caid are socialist programs.

So all the people that are Republican and complaining about socialism should stop and think about things that go on around them and question whether they can live without those programs.

Wake up people, they have been around for a very long time and to think that just because we have the very First African American President in office that he is changing everything to be a socialist country. How racist.

No it doesn't. This is like someone voting twice in an election decided by 10,000 votes. Shouldn't have happened, but didn't affect the results.

I think Fox needs to throw out the votes from the two parties and conduct a recount. If Kris wins then, so be it. If not, Adam becomes the Idol winner. If they do not, Kris' victory will always be questioned.

Sore losers on here. What a "bunch" of sour grapes. Though, I find that if anyone dare express a different opinion on here you're crucified. So much for the liberal agenda.

Isn't it awful how that freedom of expression goes two ways, and isn't just for Conservatives. I mean, how dare anyone express an opinion disagreeing with your opinion! Why, aren't you just the "crucified" martyr because people are allowed, how dare they, to criticize your pearls of wisdom!

The losers in this is AT & T, and American Idol. As a sponsor, AT & T should have been neutral and not attended parties for either candidate. American Idol should never have permitted as many votes as you can get in within a 4 hour window. It is insane to be bragging about a record breaking 100 million votes, when it doesn't represent the number of people voting. American Idol turns off the average viewer who isn't able to get through the phone lines, and encourages power texts to inflate their numbers. I feel sorry for Kris Allen, who heard about the Christians voting against Adam more than they were voting for him. Its sad that his win is questionable. I don't believe that he would have wanted to win like that. I am confident that Kris and Adam will do well in their careers regardless, but next season, I think that American Idol will be paying (with less viewers) because of their lack of fairness in the voting rules.

Excellent post Saddie. AT&T should have been neutral as you say. Even though Adam was my favorite this year I really feel for sorry for Kris Allen. It kind of sucks all the joy out of winning! Thanks AT&T!

Read the article. AT&T did NOT sponsor the parties, nor did they send those employees over to teach anyone how to power text. GAD people, read.

If you scout around and realize the massive bigotry against homosexuals in this country (especially when it comes to Fox viewers), you'll know that cheating didn't have to happen for Adam to lose.

On the bright side, this sort of hype and drama can only help his career.

As a side note, I didn't follow the show, but I did catch a clip of Mad World. Great rendition.

Well.. it just goes to show.. that if you are talented (kris allen), then you have to CHEAT to win over the talented Adam Lambert...they really need to pursue this further..bring ATT&T down...and i will say this... Adam's sales will go thru the roof... you will see HIM on stage next season when Ryan comes over to present ADAM with the platinum framed albums, NOT Kris... this WILL be the tell tale of who's voice everyone LIKED better ...ALSO... Ai just lost another viewer... their ratings are going to hurt next year almost to the point i see them shutting the show down after :)

GOOD...
YOU WON ADAM!! WE ALL KNOW IT!

I eagerly await Adams first CD. Meanwhile I just downloaded 5 of his songs from itunes. The more I listen to him the more I think this guy could go really, really far. I'm not a rocker, but I love his take on these older rock songs and he's great with other music genres too. He seems to have a rare ability like that of Sinatra who was able to present the music the way the song writer intended it to be sung. He has a gift of musical interpretation that goes way beyond the norm. Yeah, many of us know he should have won. But....If there was cheating going on they will have to deal with their own conscience about that. Adam will be great, and if little cute as a button Kris can act, well....maybe he'd be a good cast for a Audie Murphy biopic.
