LOS ANGELES — A few overeager AT&T employees brought demo phones to "American Idol" viewing parties in Arkansas and helped fans text their votes, but their actions did not affect the outcome between native son Kris Allen and Adam Lambert, the company said Wednesday.

Allen, 23, of Conway, Ark., won by an undisclosed margin over Lambert, 27, of San Diego, a powerful singer who'd been cast by the show's judges as the front-runner. Host Ryan Seacrest said nearly 100 million votes were sent by phone or text message after last Tuesday's final performance, but did not mention how those votes were divided.

While anyone in the United States could phone in votes, only AT&T customers were allowed to text.

About 20 phones were brought to two separate parties in Arkansas, and two of those phones were capable of sending multiple votes by so-called "power texting," a person familiar with the gatherings said. A second person, with knowledge of the voting results, said Allen won by a large enough margin that a handful of voters could not have swayed the outcome.

Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment on the voting process or the Arkansas parties.

"Idol" prohibits "power voting" by text or phone, and has internal safeguards against the practice.

In a joint statement, Fox and producer FremantleMedia said the results were "fair, accurate and verified" by an independent, third-party monitor to protect the integrity of the voting process. "In no way did any individuals unfairly influence the outcome of the competition."

"Kris Allen is, without a doubt, the American Idol," Fox and FremantleMedia said.

According to AT&T, "a few local AT&T employees" were invited to attend local viewing parties in Arkansas for the "American Idol" finale, parties the company said were similar to other, "countless" ones held in "homes, bars and other public places" nationwide.

"Caught up in the enthusiasm of rooting for their hometown contestant, they brought a small number of demo phones with them and provided texting tutorials to those who were interested," AT&T said in its statement.

Dallas-based AT&T, the country's largest telecommunications company, is one of the show's main sponsors, though it did not sponsor the parties in question.

"Going forward, we will make sure our employees understand our sponsorship celebrates the competition, not individual contestants. That said, it's quite a leap to suggest that a few individuals could have impacted the final results," the company said.

An AT&T spokesman declined to address how many employees were invited or how many people attended the Arkansas parties.

One of the parties attended by AT&T was at the University of Central Arkansas' Estes Stadium, with about 2,000 people in attendance, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported last week. The paper said display phones and company representatives were on hand to teach multiple "power texting" there, with phones and representatives also available at a watch party at the Peabody Little Rock hotel.

Sonja Keith, part of the "Kris Allen Kick Awesome Task Force" that helped organize watch parties, said she contacted AT&T about coming to the party at the stadium in Conway because she'd heard some people were having difficulty getting through on the toll-free number.

"A suggestion was made that we needed to get in touch with the phone carriers to see if there was a problem _ if there was something that they could do to ensure that our calls were getting through."

Keith said the business was one of many that participated at the various events held throughout the competition, and did so with "good intentions."

"I don't think anybody was trying to do anything underhanded or be unfair. I would think that the people in San Diego (Lambert's hometown) have the same resources available to them that the people in Conway do. I don't know that they were as organized as we were in terms of their support."

"Idol" has been inconsistent in its disclosure of vote totals: Last year, Seacrest said during the finale that 12 million votes was the difference between winner David Cook and runner-up David Archuleta. Other results have been vaguely referenced as "close," while some _ like this year's finale _ have not been officially addressed at all.

For his part, Lambert said he didn't know the results of the final vote, and "didn't ask." But he was more suspicious of the "Gokey factor" _ the migration of church leader Danny Gokey's votes to the more conservative Allen _ than any kind of grassroots effort.

"I knew that (losing) was a possibility," Lambert said Tuesday. "I knew that Kris had just as much of a chance as I did. You know, it was gonna come down to the two of us, and the people that had been voting for more of the conservative choices up until then were probably going to default more to Kris than to me."

Adam has had several offers by now and has moved on, which is really what anyone wants out of all of this. He will soon be laughing all the way to the bank, provided he has a good entertainment lawyer. So there was no real conspiracy against Adam as a previous HP writer alluded. The attempt to create the perception that there are more viewers than there actually are is the only reason for giving viewers multiple votes, instead of one per phone line or computer. The reality is people are losing interest and it's time to jump the shark for these reality shows.

Right. Fox likes to brag about how many votes came in but that doesn't translate into viewers and sales. 100 million votes. 23 million viewers. Kris sells 400,000 singles, 10,000 albums.

Has FOX released the vote count? They were pretty clear about the difference in votes a few eliminations back. If they are so certain that the AT&T had no influence, then they should produce the numbers to back it up!

"...and that the integrity of the voting process was protected against unfair influence."

EXCEPT by 13 year old girls.........congrats Kris....... WHOOPTEE!!!!

A.I. needs to DUMP their stupid unlimited voting system and do what DWTS and other shows do, give fans a limited number of votes per line......THEN you'll see who's really America's favorite.

I never watch this show anymore. Since maybe two seasons ago some girl didn't even have a singing voice and some other person with a beautiful voice got sacked. It was just crap and it all ended for me. Crap show. (well I like the ones who can sing!)

Some people can't accept that one trick pony Adam, who does his 70's scream through every song, did not win because he was predictable. Despite the raves of the IDOL judges, many people grew tired of his Arrowsmith, Kiss and Queen wannabe sound and his cockiness that he was the sure winner. If I want to hear a modern band that sounds like they are from the 70's I can listen to The Darkness.

Wow, um, Bitter - Sounds like you really are. Listen to tinternet posts of Lambert's several years in musical theatre. His acting/singing ability set him way above the field - In fact, in the musical, "The Ten Commandments" only he received a favorable NY Times review. Sometimes the ones who have paid their dues do shine! A-I forces all of the kids into musical genres way before their time. If they allowed 40'ish singers, "The Turkey Trot" would be a mandated song. Any inpropriety in the voting is inexcusable - The good news is the kids supported each other.. and they will both do well.

Let's see. Today Adam charrted higher on the Billboard album chart than Kris. And even though Kris won AI he only sold less than 100,000 singles more than Adam whose singles have been selling up the whazoo for the past few week - outselling all Idols combined. Adam sang Mad World magnificantly this morning on Regis and Kelly. Chris sang No Boundries this morning on tv - not so much. I guess some people don't consider Adam a one trick pony.

Oh Adam is no one trick pony. He's the real deal. I liked Mad World but really loved the slow roll of tracks of my tears. I don't understand why people call Adam 'screaming' when he hits the high notes. I'm a baby boomer and you bet your a** I will buy every single album Adam puts out. He's the best I have ever heard. No matter what range, fast or slow, rock or not - he's a star. You just watch him soar.

I had already decided after the outcome of this years Idol I would never watch it again. This season was the first I've really watched in a long time, Adam drew me back in. I was told over & over how the teenage girls fell for Kris, and that was the ticket. I just couldn't wrap my mind around the fact that all these teenage girls loved Kris, but out of 100 million votes that came in only 28 million watched the show? I was really baffled by this for I was a teenager once, and if ALL the teenagers in America loved Kris they would've tuned in for sure. Now it makes sense it wasn't teenagers, nor was it that Adam didn't relate to "Middle America" as I was told over & over...it was his hometown loaded with weapons (cellphones) provided for free by the phone company that just so happens to be the ONLY provider to offer free text messaging...at least now it makes more sense. AL should have changed the voting rules a long time ago, but they didn't...I have a feeling it is a mistake their ratings will pay for!

If they don't change sponsors or voting rules, I will not watch it any longer. There would be no point would there. It would be like all those wasted votes in 2000 and 2004. They just didn't count, so why bother?

I doubt I will watch it any further.....it use to be a good show. Nothing against Kris, but he messed up two songs on the final and would have been voted out; but my winning by the cheating way; he did a favor for Adam.....

Are you saying you think AT&T might have allowed more calls to go through for the other contestant while giving the loser's calls a busy signal on purpose?

The trunks (circuits) may not have been carefully tested, or there may not have been as many available for Gokey due to errors.

So, could be accidental or purposeful.
