Gonzales

One of the more provocative critiques to come from conservatives concerning the appointment of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court has been the charge that her nomination is racial politics at its most cynical. But in the past, Republicans were eager to play up the diversity of their own nominees.

She is "an affirmative action pick," declared Pat Buchanan on MSNBC's Hardball. "Clearly the president was down to four choices, all of them woman, and he picked the Hispanic." Earlier in the day, Rush Limbaugh ramped up the rhetoric even further, proclaiming Sotomayor "a reverse racist" who was appointed by "the greatest living example of a reverse racist" -- Obama.

There are, of course, dangers in proclaiming that a racial-political calculus drove Obama's hand. For starters, such claims deeply offend members of the Hispanic community who rightfully deem Sotomayor more than qualified. In addition, they lend themselves to charges of hypocrisy. Chris Matthews interrupted Buchanan to point out that the Clarence Thomas nomination seemed influenced by racial politics. And a reader notes that when Orrin Hatch took to the Senate floor to push the nomination of Alberto Gonzales for Attorney General, he elevated the nominee's Hispanic roots and accused opponents of racial insensitivity.

"Look, this is not just any nomination," Hatch, then Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman declared on February 1, 2005. "This is a nomination for the Attorney General of the United States of America. This is the first Hispanic ever nominated for that position, or for any of the big four positions in the Cabinet of any President. ... We work with Hispanic people all over America who are every bit as devoted to our country as any citizen who has ever been in this country. I personally love Hispanic people. Frankly, I know my friends in the Hispanic community, and Hispanic people all over America, are watching this debate, and they are sensing something very unfair going on here."

"And to have this man come from the most humble of circumstances, which typifies the struggle every immigrant family in this country has gone through, and to not give him this opportunity when he is fully qualified for it, I think, would be a travesty.

"When I talk to people around the country, I sometimes tell them that within the Hispanic community there is a shared hope for an opportunity to succeed. Just give me a chance to prove myself -- that is a common prayer for those in my community. I ask my colleagues to do exactly that -- give Judge Gonzales a chance to prove himself. He will not let you down."

The GHP the Grand Hypocrit Party is what I have called them since I started following politics in the early 90's. I turned 18 during Newt's reign. When he went after Clinton while having an affair with his staffer at the same time. Since then it has all been more of the same.

Newt never lied under oath before a Grand Jury, Clinton did.
The point of Clinton's impeachment wasn't that he had an affair, or that he lied to his wife
The impeachment was about the fact that a sitting U.S. President perjured himself;
that is was about sex was legally irrelevant. The media sensationalized the sex aspect and the Dems have spun it ever since. Which is why you bought into the misinformation of the Dems.

It's apples and oranges to compare Newt and Bill. You had to watch C-Span to get the real story. Most media outlets dwelt on the salacious aspects of the case.

The question is why did a sitting President find himself in the position of having to face a Grand Jury???

Karl Rove lied to a Grand Jury and he is still walking around without ever having to pay the price.

Seems like Rove was called three times before he finally got his answers all lined up.

Do you think that Rove should have to pay for his lies as well???

Oh give me a break. The entire Clinton decade was nothing but one witch hunt after another for Tom Delay, Newt Gingrich and the rest of the criminals.

Hmmm... Can the GOP afford to completely alienate the fastest growing minority group in this country? It's nothing but offensive to call Ms. Sotomayer an "affirmative action pick". Basically, the GOP is saying the courts are for conservative whites only.

Hmmmm... How fast can the Democrats pander to them?

Remember, they came to this country to escape a failing s0cialist state... I'm not sure if they're ready to start voting for that type of thing again.

Once again the double standard, when Republicans do it, it is to be praiseworthy, when Democrats do it it's just affirmative action......

We have all seen the professional ineptitude that was Gonzales. Unless the Republicans against Sotomayor can come up with similar evidence, they should really shut up and sit back down!

Obscuring the true race debate in the country is a tried-in-true republican tactic, Blacks, Asians, Natives, Arabs, Hispanics, and other racial groups, are divided (and conquered) because they ignore their common enemy (white supremacy). For a better understanding of the concept of white supremacy, as it relates to the Sotomayor nomination, GOOGLE: PAT BUCHANAN, RACIAL POLITICS, OR NEW WORLD ORDER.

Can't even put Gonzo in the same sentence with this woman!! As far as good ol Pat Buchanan, he's just ticked off due to the position this puts his party in! Yea Pat, your party surely will lose many many votes come election time! Too bad, so sad! LOL

I guess Pat forgot that Reagan wanted a woman for SCOTUS before he was even elected. And he only had women on his short list.

Do all Whites see the problem that racism has created in this country!! Why don't the federal govt apologize for Slavery, Jim Crow, and racism?

The problem with Pat is that he only competed against White men. He never had or was too scared to compete with Black men!! The country protect him.

Since when have Republicans -- of late -- not just "talked the talk" but "walked the walk" too? They have learned the "art" of manipulating reality to suit themselves, NOT serve America. And they are paying for that. WHEN, precisely, will they learn how they are sinking their party?

Limbaugh and his "reverse racism". Talk about a Neo-Con(vict) definition. What do you have when there's reverse 'anything'....the opposite of whatever it is you're describing. A 'reversed' racist makes them a NON-racist. Check you're definitions Limbaugh....I know you'll be in there under just plain old racist.

This is some sort of attempt at equating AG's grasp of the law with Ms. Sotomayor based on their heritage. Weak.

This just the same old-same old for the republicans; They really are just the "NO" party. Their sole purpose is to stand in the way of anything the democrats do. The GOP has not been constructive at fixing any of our ills for a very long time; all they do is push fixing anything off to a future date. They just continue to hit the snooze as it were...

Are you sure you didn't leave any Dem talking points out? Would you like to add some more in reply to me?

As for the party of "No" routine, have you not considered the role of the opposition party; by definition it is to oppose. Are you saying that the Dems didn't oppose Bush? Have you given any thought to what you are going to say before you post a comment?

Yeah, it would be great if BOTH the GOP AND the Dems would work together in our interest; but it disingenuous to imply that it's ONLY the GOP that is oppositional when out of power.

Also, do you have no memory of all the things Bush had to deal with that Clinton kicked down the road?

The duty of the opposition party is to provide solutions. Not obstruct merely to see things get worse so that they can pretend to blame the other guys.

Let me understand this. Politician is saying one thing and doing another? Put a microphone in front of a politician and they will just start talking-doesn't matter if it's not on. I imagine you will also see a lot of the code words from both sides that really mean nothing during the vetting process
