JERUSALEM — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday urged Arab countries to make immediate moves toward normalizing ties with Israel and said he would offer "concrete" steps toward peace with the Palestinians.

Netanyahu made the plea during a debate in parliament that came as he tries to balance international pressure to make concessions to the Palestinians with internal calls from within his hardline coalition not to budge.

"We are prepared to make, and we will make, concrete steps for peace with the Palestinians," he said. "We expect the Palestinians to make such concrete steps as well. And it would be good if Arab countries joined the peace effort and made concrete and symbolic steps toward normalization with Israel, not later, but now," Netanyahu said.

He mentioned cooperation in economic projects and agriculture but insisted any progress would depend on positive Palestinian actions.

President Barack Obama supports the normalization idea, Netanyahu said, calling it a "new and refreshing" approach that "totally matches our views."

Netanyahu, who was at the White House last week, also said that he and Obama agree the Iranian threat could create an opportunity to bring Arab countries together in a coalition of moderates, Netanyahu said.

Israel considers Iran a serious danger because of its nuclear program, development of long-range missiles and frequent references by its president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to Israel's destruction. Israel dismisses Iran's insistence that its nuclear program is peaceful, charging that the Iranians are building nuclear weapons.

Obama has made clear that his administration supports the creation of a Palestinian state, and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has called for a complete halt to construction in West Bank settlements. The U.S. considers Israel's 121 settlements obstacles to peace, since they are built on territory claimed by the Palestinians.

Netanyahu's policies clash with those of the U.S. on both of those points, raising concerns of a looming rift with Washington.

Netanyahu says he is willing to resume peace talks immediately, but has not said he supports the creation of a Palestinian state, a cornerstone of international Mideast peace efforts.

Netanyahu also says existing settlements should continue to expand to accommodate "natural growth" in their populations. He also has ruled out ceding sovereignty in east Jerusalem, which Palestinians want as the capital of a future state. Israel captured the area in the 1967 Mideast war and annexed it.

Senator Robert Casey, a Democrat from Pennsylvania heading a Congressional delegation visiting Israel, said Wednesday that the administration's policy over the settlements is still being formulated.

Though Obama called for a total construction freeze, Casey said, "I think there is a way to meet in the middle, and obviously the articulations and definitions are going to be important. It is too early to prejudge."

Currency of Netanyahu on current international diplomacy:
Woefully behind.

It's funny how Israel bashers say that Israel is stealing land when since 1967, it has given back 94% of the land that was under it's control. Plus the first phase of the road map to peace is ceasing all violence. That onus is on Hamas and the Palestinians.

When Israeli leader Benyamin netanyahu talks about "peace" , it means peace on their terms which is derived from unfair, prejudiced, inhuman Zionist policy. "PEACE" means the following points :

* New settlement expansions on Palestinian land
* Annexation of East Jerusalem where close to quarter of a million Palestinians live.
* No autonomy or free to choose their own state democratically.
* No rights to build homes in East Jerusalem.
* Demolishing Arab homes, calling them illegal
* Not abiding U.N Resolutions (dozens), would have been hundreds if U.S did not veto many.
* Not allowing refugees to return to their towns and families; the irony is, most of the settlers are
immigrants from eastern Europe who voted for the party of Israeli FM Avigdor who himself was
born in Moldova, USSR.
* No freedom of movemen.

as U.S VP Biden told netanyahu "This is
a "show me" deal -- not based on faith -- show me."
The time of Israeli PR spin and media manipulation is way gone. People see reality on the ground with the new media.
good luck

"Netanyahu also says existing settlements should continue to expand to accommodate "natural growth" in their populations. He also has ruled out ceding sovereignty in east Jerusalem, which Palestinians want as the capital of a future state."

This is how you know he doesn't want peace, he wants Victory, as his political backers define it.

And as long as you want Victory more than peace, you'll never have peace. And while it's none of my business what this coalition government wants, it *is* my business if my tax dollars help subsidize keeping it at the point of a gun. Time to cut this cord.

here we are with "concrete" reality in israeli Parliament

http://haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1088591.html

National Union MK Aryeh Eldad's proposal that Jordan take responsibility for the Palestinians' welfare is a "baseless hallucination," the president told Israel Radio. .

Eldad brought the proposal for a preliminary vote in the Knesset plenum, where it passed with the support of 53 members, including Labor Party ministers Ehud Barak, Benjamin Ben-Eliezer, and Yitzhak Herzog. The bill will now go before the Knesset's foreign affairs and defense committee. .

Eldad told lawmakers during a Knesset plenum last week that Palestinians must be given Jordanian citizenship, claiming that Jordan is essentially the Palestinian state
------

This mean they want Jordan to take the Palestinians (not the Palestine territory) and they voted for it

Correctly Mr Peres identified the problem in the oddness of a country (Israel) voting about another (Jordan) on an issue regarding a third party

But... read comments on Haaretz and you'll discover how this crazyness is shared by commentators and how many raging insults Peres has collected

Natanyahoo's days as top bulldog are numbered.

His government will, IS already failing.

All the pro Izzie people on Capitol Hill prefer to work with Kadima - they want Livni back and they're all helping her get there and get there fast.

Why?

Because finally the USA recognizes that the establishment of a Palestinian state is a national security issue. And Natanyahoo is in the way.

That's why, as predicted by many analysts, Washington has put the polite 'freeze' on Natanyahoo...

... Just waiting for the inevitable.

Tick tock tick tock...

"...insisted any progress would depend on positive Palestinian actions..."

That means the Palestinians have to give in to his demands first.

His talk is empty of peace intentions.

What's wrong with the Palestinians showing positive actions first? Israel will only make peace with the Palestinians if they see that the Palestinians make a genuine attempt at peace. You want nothing short of Israel's destruction, that is the only peace you want.

Oh I dunno, could it be that the Israeli military killed over 1400 innocent women and children in an inhumane raid against a population they already starved for 18 months prior of essentials? They sent 500,000+ into the streets with no shelter or clean water. Never mind anything beyond water... like food or medical care. And this was just in 2009 alone. Let's remember that the Palestinians' rights have been stampeded on by the Europeans now claiming to be Israelis since a little bit before 1948.

Further, Israel has NEVER made a concrete and internationally-accepted move for peace with the Palestinians. Even during their "unilateral Gaza withdrawal", there were leaks from Sharon's chief of staff stating how Israel is not interested in peace and really is trying to freeze the peace process all together.

Israel is interested in grabbing land, as exhibited by their illegal annexation following the 1967 war and the many settlements they continue to expand upon under government sponsored programs. This is all too apparent to the non-sheeple. So, to you, Hasbara (the government Israeli propaganda machine), I say move on.

Aziat - After "cast lead" there has been a cease fire of sorts.

How many Palistinians have died or have been injured at the hands of Israe, and how many Israeli's have died or been injured at the hands of the Palistinians ?

I don't know the numbers but I'm sure the numbers would overwhelmingly support my argument that it's Israel that needs to show restraint.

Peace would entail their land be returned from the fanatical lunes who believe god promised them land. Look into the history.
Israel should be a boat that floats on the sea. That way it can only kill fish.

No more empty than that emanating from the PA and the bellicose screeds issued by Hamas. Peace talks are impossible to have when there is no trust or genuine intent on either side to achieve a permanent solution of two states.

Netanyahu is:

1. Not going to return the Golan Heights.
2. Not going to discuss returning East Jerusalem to the Palestinians.(Who constitute the majority in East Jerusalem)
3. Not going to cease settlement expansion in the west bank.
4. Passes racist laws against 1948 Israeli Arabs who wish to commomerate Al-Nakba, by jailing them for their speech.
5. Wants the indigenous population of Arabs to swear allegience, not only to a Jewish state, but to a ZIONIST state.

And he is wondering why Arabs are not going to "Normalize" relations with Israel?

I'll check fro Mr Casey address then, heavily armed, I'll occupy his home, but I'll be human and allow him and his family to live in basement

when he'll protest or charge me in court, I'll propose him to "meet in the middle", i think I could allow him even to walk in the courtyard, but just some hours a day

East Jerusalem was part of Jordan, not Palestine.
Palestinians also constitute a majority in Jordan, should those areas be a part of a Palestinian State?
The law banning Al-Nakba will not come close to passing.
Netanyahu never said that he was wants Arabs to swear allegiance.
Egypt and Jordan already have normalized relations with Israel, so I guesse he is not wondering.

"Egypt and Jordan already have normalized relations with Israel, so I guesse he is not wondering." Normal relationships do not run adverse to the peoples' interests. While Israel may have bought the politicians of Egypt and Jordan, they do not represent the Arabs therein and should not have normalized relationships with the briber, Israel.

Egypt and Jordan "normalized" relations are only ink on paper. The people of Egypt and Jordan are still fiercely against normal relations, and relations are anything but normal.
Palistinians constitute a majority in Jordan due to the fact that the vast majority of them were kicked out of 1948 "Israel". Once a Palestinian is established, the Palestinian state can ask for any Palestinians to return to Palestine if they so wish.
East Jerusalem was never part of Jordan. It was once under Jordanian governence, but it was always part of the Palestinian Mandate.

How about letting in lentils? What are the Israelis afraid of? Roadside lentil bombs?

Nope, they are systematically conducting a slow-genocide and ethnic cleansing supported by our politicians in the US. Calls to break ties with Israel would be wonderful just about now, considering that a significant portion of our tax money goes to Israel's murderous rampages.
