I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Tom Tancredo, the former Colorado congressman and radical anti-immigration activist, called President Obama's Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor a racist Tuesday, telling MSNBC's Ed Shultz she has said plenty of "things that are racist."

Tancredo failed to elaborate on his claims, but he suggested Sotomayor's nomination should be blocked on account of her "racism." No one else has called her out for before, he said, because she is Latina.

"Unfortunately for her, and fortunately us, there are plenty of things that we've even talked about here already that you keep ignoring," Tancredo said. "I'm telling you she appears to be a racist. She said things that are racist in any other context, that's exactly how we would portray it, and there's no one that would get on the Supreme Court, saying a thing like that, except for a Hispanic woman and you're going to say it doesn't matter? Well, man, where are you coming from? How can you possibly say that?"

Tancredo, who ran for president in 2008 on an anti-immigration platform, is no stranger to racist comments. One of his campaign ads suggested that illegal immigrants are likely to be terrorists. Among the causes he championed while serving four terms in Congress was an effort to deport all illegal immigrants from the country and outlaw any type of immigration to the U.S. -- legal or illegal. Tancredo once sought to deport the family of a Denver high school student who was profiled in the local paper for his good grades after he learned the student was not a legal citizen.

Now we know why Ed Shultz put him on the show. It's too easy letting the GOP plan their own trip into the wilderness.

Poor Tommy - he's become irrelevant and can't face that fact. Keep it going though - good for the Dems.

Did I hear him correctly when he said "She appears to be a racist"? What kind of a statement is that? It sounds like it's coming from a man who is afraid of anything that is not conservative to the extreme.

Tancredo has hitched his wagon to this illegal immigrant debate and spent a great deal of time arguing it's not about racism.

Then he goes and blow his "reasoned" spin with comments like this.

He must be angling for a radio talk show slot.

Considering the fact that the Hispanic population is projected to be around 30% of overall population of the U.S. by 2050 (actually, probably well before that), the Republicans are looking more and more like the new trilobites. Keep at it, GOP...

I love it when WHITE people go around calling minorities R-A-C-I-S-T, when they are the ones who enslaved blacks for over 400 years.

Most cultures experienced slavery within their societies, but it was a "humane" slavery, if one can conceive of any slavery being humane!

The slaves in African societies in particular were generally treated like part of the family, often being educated with the children of the family, sometimes marrying into the family, and even receiving inheritances upon the death of their owners. But even in the harsher slave environments, they were nonetheless treated as people.

This was not true of how slaves were treated in America for 400 years, which is why the lingering shame of slavery still remains with us almost 200 years since it was abolished.

The Egyptians would never have treated their slaves as Europeans and ultimately as Americans did.

whatashame, the constitution was ratified around 1787 or so and emancipation was in 1961, you are not good with math are you? that is less than four hundred years and you can still find slavery today and the slavemasters are not white.

The first colonists arrived in the 1400's early 1500's. And guess what. They brought slaves with them. Pick up a book and read sometimes. Besides, whatashame did not say "America", he said "Whites" as in general. Please think before you open your mouth and make yourself look really foolish.

And you are using funny math. It only matters if the US as a nation enslaved people? The north atlantic slave trade to the colonies began in the 1500s. So that's 300 years and regardless of the emancipation proclamation (and a brief period of semi-equal rights just following the civil war,) african americans were subjugated for another 100 years afterwards. Sure, they weren't owned, but they were not "free" in american society, particularly in the south. Read some history, will ya?

You are right though that slavery still exists for people of all colors in various places around the world. Welcome to the 21st century.

There has been slavery since the beginning or time; not that I think its a good thing, but don't blame all "white" people for it.

This is the same guy who rejects evolution in favor of intelligent design. Mike Allan's expressionless face as Tancredo tried out his best Rush impersonation was priceless. If you are going to go on national tv, at least try to make a coherent argument instead of throwing a fit as if you are in the third grade.

What is Tancredo's problem? He lives in Arizona, which used to be part of Mexico, before it was part of Spain, and before that the native americans.

A Mexican is technically a half native indian and half Spanish....So, in essence, the Southwest (including Arizona) has been part of their ancestral grounds for thousands of years....

This guy is a total RACIST. His whole platform was based on Racism. He couldn't even answer the question...Not only does he insult Mexican-Americans. Sotomayor is of Puerto Rican heritage.

He had the temerity to call Miami a "Third World Country," Tancredo + GOP Racist = Continued Losses for the Repubican Party for YEARS to come....
