I Like ItI Don’t Like It

When Tim Browne sits down to a bowl of corn flakes in the morning, he slurps up one unusual, and controversial, extra ingredient: his own daughter's breast milk.

He doesn't do it for the taste -- Browne initally said his daughter Georgia's breast milk tasted "not unpleasant, but slightly pungent" -- but for his health.

Nearly two years ago, the retired teacher and musician from Wiltshire, England, was diagnosed with colon cancer. He went into surgery a week before his daughter's wedding, but a month later, doctors told him the cancer had spread to his liver and lymph nodes and was terminal.

When my wife was pregnant I had to try it because I have always loved milk (I was breast feed and not sure that means anything) and I found it to be rather sweet.

Good for him - and for her.

Funny how no one thinks a thing of drinking milk from a beast, but human milk is verboten.

Well as long as he is not bellying up to the bar ( if you know what I mean) why not give it a try.

America has got to wake up and join the rest of the world when it comes to mother's milk. I'm not sure about the curative effects on cancer, but in terms of infant nutrition we are way behind. American mothers are far less likely to breast feed their children and it makes no sense. It's natural, it's free, it's healthier and more beneficial to babies. The stigma Americans attach to breastfeeding makes this story a big deal because people don't accept babies drinking breast milk, let alone adults drinking it for health reasons. how does it make more sense for us to drink cow, soy, or goat's milk, but not human milk?

When you have to go back to work within weeks of giving birth and said work has no childcare, so you have to leave your child far away and said work usually has no place to pump milk, plus you don't get a break every two hours to do so.

Our supposed advanced nation is so backwards when it comes to women and children. It's fine if we have the babies, but let's not disturb or bother anyone.

And, just try breastfeeding in public.

I have never had it myself but can't help but marvel at my own hypocrisy and at the fact that we are AMAZED that a man would drink breast milk that came from a --- gasp --- woman but do not bat an eye when we drink breast milk from a COW!

None of us can tell another person how much they should be allowed to want to live, or how hard they should fight to stay alive.

If it is proven that breast milk really does shrink cancer tumors it will be outlawed to drink it. The big drug companies wouldn't stand for something that they couldn't patten and make a profit off of, and our government would pass the laws to help them out. We already have a proven cancer shrinking plant available, and you don't see it being legalized. Everyone should be able to take advantage of this natural plant, but we can't. Everyday you see a new drug that kills people and is being pulled off the market, but the one that has proven to be harmless and helpful is still illegal. What a wonderful country we live in that we have no health care and no rights to take care of our own health. It's just mind boggling.

If this is indeed effective, we won't hear about it until Big Pharma has found a way to cash in.

While I think there is nothing wrong with this here scenario, I would expect that someone who is
serious about their healthcare would change their diet and not eat cornflakes and cows milk. First rule in boosting your immune system: clean up your diet...no amount of miracle juice can compensate.

It's pretty crazy. Big business/pharma, whatever, have spent DECADES trying to replicate breast milk. Can't do it. There's just something about it. So crazy that in my mother's generations, the hospitals gave the new moms drugs to STOP lactating and gave them formula for their babies. wtf? It's so big-brother-patronizing-paternalistic. Crazy.

Is there any evidence that drinking human milk has any effect on cancer?

Actually, there is one study (but very small, and not yet replicated, IIRC) that cancer cells exposed to human breast milk went into apoptosis (cell death). However, it's a single study and until results can be replicated, it should not be assumed to be determinative. The problem with cancer and Westerners' attitude to it is that people will grasp at any straw to evade death. As another commenter pointed out, we're not meant to live forever. Rather than grasping at straws, take it as a message from the universe to put your house in order and enjoy your remaining years until it's time to go.

Well, I don't think they have to be mutually exclusive - being prepared to die while fighting for life. The universe, as you put it, also saw fit to endow us with the ability to overcome our circumstance in addition to being victims of it. Although I might be (and am) ready to go whenever that time comes, there is no reason that someone who isn't should have to follow my lead. In other words, once you're dead, then it's time - short of this, I don't think it's anyone else's call. If your daughter's breast milk will help you live longer and the two of you are willing to pursue the treatment, then I say, "go for it," even if it isn't exactly my cup of tea.
