Murdoch

News Corp Chairman Rupert Murdoch made an appearance on his corporation's business station, Fox Business Network, Thursday to speak to Brian Sullivan about the future of newspapers.

Murdoch, a steadfast believer in newspapers, acknowledged that people may consume newspaper products on electronic devices in the future but assured that online content will be paid for eventually.

"Newspapers may look very different. Instead of an analog product printed on paper, you may get it on a panel which will be mobile, which will receive the whole newspaper over the air, and be updated every hour or two. All of these things are possible.

"You're going to have to pay for your favorite newspaper on the Web," he added. Free content online "is going to stop. Newspapers will be selling subscriptions on the Web. The whole thing [premium content] will be there. The Web as it is today will be vastly improved, they'll be much in them and you'll pay for them."

Murdoch added that News Corp would "never take money from the government" because it would represent the end of freedom of the press. "I don't believe even the New York Times would," he said. "I don't think the government would even do it. They'd realize this would be the end of it."

Murdoch closed the interview with a prediction that one of the Chicago newspapers will die.

"One will go away," he said. "It's very hard to see how the Sun-Times can keep going. I thought it was hard when I owned it ten years ago."

Hopefully his cable channels will go away too! His admittance proves the popularity numbers he reports and polls are false. Most of his money is spent on paying people off to say they are watching his entertainment channels.

Print news is boring. Corporations and govt. have their place...but repeating their point of view got old a long time ago.

And to continue to call the NYTimes liberal shows just how out of touch with reality they are.

The New York Times is only slightly better than the rest of them. I wouldn't have any of them in my house.

Who cares if a newspaper or fifty fail? Heck, they failed to deal with the truth for eight years and longer and demonstrated a desire to pander to owners and advertizers while manipulating the sentiments of the public with distortions, a failure to fact check and a willingness to say or do whatever was fashionable. Mainstream media has failed to do anthing but become a mouthpiece for corporate advertizing and opinion mongering. If we want to lament the loss of information and journalism thats fine, just remember that it wasn't caused by newspapers failing, it was caused by media being co-opted by political and corporate interests. I don't read my loca paper because it doesn't actually do any journalism at all, just repeats whatever is on the AP that resonates with local people while selling cars and pineapples and banks. Why pay for that?

Of course he wants the Chicago Sun-Times to go away. His ownership of it was one of his biggest failures. Sour grapes and wishful thinking.

Murdoch is not one of my favorite people. But he's right. The physical form of newspapers is over. Hopefully, the papers can adapt to the web and make money. Watch:

What he failed to reveal to you is that no one is buying his media, and watching his horrible racists entertainment news shows. Good riddance!
