TORONTO — Former President George W. Bush called former President Bill Clinton "his brother" and the two rarely disagreed in their first-ever appearance together on stage.

The Republican and Democratic ex-presidents defended each other at a Toronto forum on Friday, disappointing some in the crowd of 6,000 who expected a more heated debate.

Bush said that he never liked it when previous administration officials criticized his government but said Clinton was respectful and never did.

Bush declined to criticize the Obama administration, in contrast to former Vice President Dick Cheney, who has been a vocal critic of Obama. Bush, who wasn't asked about Cheney, said there are "plenty of critics in America."

Bush and Clinton did differ on Iraq. Clinton said U.N inspectors should have been given more time to conduct the search for weapons of mass destruction and Bush should have concentrated on Afghanistan. Bush disagreed.

"I don't buy the premise that our attention was diverted," Bush said.

Bush joked about how much time his father, former President George H.W. Bush, and Clinton spend together. He said his mother, Barbara Bush, "said President Clinton and Father share the stage so much, he's like a son to her."

He said, "So brother, it's good to see you."

Clinton and the elder Bush have worked together to lead fundraising after disasters such as the southeast Asian tsunami, Hurricane Katrina and last summer's Hurricane Ike.

While both men received polite applause from the audience at Toronto's convention center, a couple hundred protesters demonstrated outside. The organizers declined to say how much the men were paid for the event, called "A conversation with Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton." Ticket prices sold for C$200 to C$2,500.

Bush joked about the speaking fees, which are normally lucrative for former presidents.

"President Clinton and I used to believe in free speech," Bush said before pausing. "So thanks very much for coming _ we are glad you're here."

The two made speeches before taking questions from moderator Frank McKenna, Canada's former ambassador to the United States.

Asked why he didn't stop the killing in the Rwanda genocide when he was president in 1994, Clinton said he had no excuse or defense.

"It's one of the two or three greatest regrets of my presidency," Clinton said.

Clinton said the U.S. could have saved 250,000 or 400,000 of the 800,000 people who died had he sent about 20,000 troops. Bush defended Clinton, saying 20,000 troops could not have been mobilized quickly.

Clinton praised Bush for his AIDS initiatives and also hailed the racial and ethnic diversity of his cabinet choices.

Christian Darbyshire and Andy McCreath, partners in tinePublic Inc, organized the event. They hosted Bush for his first speech since leaving office in March and have also hosted others like former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan.

I'm disappointed in Canada. Aren't they a part of the international criminal court? They missed an opportunity to arrest this war criminal.

Having faced down the 9/11 terrorists, eliminated the AlQueda headquarters in Afghanistan, and then turned around the economy from the dot com bust----Bush will not be seen as being so bad when history makes its judgements. His spending was out of control (but looking at what we have now makes him seem positively frugal).

faced down 9/11 terrists? I think you mean to say he ignored them, so much so the FBI lost track of them a month or so before the event = Fail; eliminated AQ headquarters in Afghanistan? It would appear they simply relocated (and BTW, exactly where are OBL and the Egyptian?) = Fail; turned around the economy? Only made it possible for the very rich to become the ultra-rich, made creative accounting a big business, and then...well, I think we all saw what transpired = Fail. And that's just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Even an attempt to cherry-pick accomplishments of GWB's presidency shows what a failure it was...

Jerry, Are you on something or just dilusional. I voted for Bush which was the worst mistake of my life. I wish I could be like you and pretend that he was a good President, but is one of the worst President if not the worst in our countries history. I wish I had some of the drugs that you are obviously on. It would make my disasterous decision to vote for Bush a lot easier for me to deal with. No matter what you are on you are still wrong.

He started his own w@r-of-choice. (Eye-rack)

He did this to continue the Bush dynasty of profiting from the w@r industry.
(It dates back all the way to his great grandfather Samuel P Bush)
The Bush family dating back to 1915 have hid behind the facade of government
running a military industry and promoting wars)

And they wanted to keep it going.
And George Bush did.
Cha -ching $$$$$$$$

This was GWB's second appearance in Canada, and again, Canadian authorities didn't arrest him. Come on, Canada, you kept Ayers out of the country...

Huge thanks to the Canadians who demonstrated. Clinton has shown his true colors ever since he left the WH. Paling around with a criminal is no novelty.

Two arrogant, soulless men. I wonder how Bush sleeps at night with over 4,600 American lives lost (and 60,000 wounded) -- not to mention over 100,000 innocent Iraqi men, women and children/babies killed--BECAUSE OF HIM.

No conscience. No sense of responsibility. No remorse.

What a disgrace.

Both of these guys are irrelevant. No one is interested in anything Bush has to say. And with Hillary Clinton now the popular and interesting Clinton, no one is interested in Bill.

I wish the would both not seek the spotlight and accept their role is elder statesmen.

Why aren't they down in New Orleans helping rebuild. That place is still in great need.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:05 PM on 05/30/2009

Allow me to point out the obvious.
They are in the news; and news worthy enough to be high lighted here at HP.

Bush dominated this article. As an ex-Presidents, Bush and Clinton will remain relevant.
This meeting in Canada is what elder statesman do. Whether or not they are in the spotlight is up to the media.

If you don't care then why pay attention to them? They arent doing anything to undermine Obama by speaking here. What exactly makes you pay attention and comment on this if you care so little?

Bill must be one of the last Americans who can still stand the sight and sound of Bush. Funny how Bush always seems to have to go to Canada to make public appearances.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:40 PM on 05/30/2009

Actually, President Bush last week received a standing ovation. He remains popular by millions of Americans. These are inconvenient truths for the left. You seem to be suffering from what so many here practice, informational incest. You might expand your news sources.

Correct. 30% of America claiming to be Republican means, assuming we are talking voting age, > 30 Million Americans. It stands to reason that it would be in the millions.

Fortunately for the rest of us non-Republicans, > 100 Million voters would never give him a standing ovation and would love to throw the Constitution at him and brought up on charges of Treason for violating the highest law of the land hundreds of times.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:37 PM on 05/30/2009

Is that why we're writing about them?
It seems a lot of people are interested in our two ex-Presidents.

They don't appear sad, especially Bush.
Neither will be lonely for the rest of their lives.

Both were respectul and courteous to each other, as well as to the forum where they were. This is one of those moments where I'm proud to be American.

Here's what bugs me in the article, though:
"Bush declined to criticize the Obama administration, in contrast to former Vice President Dick Cheney, who has been a vocal critic of Obama. Bush, who wasn't asked about Cheney, said there are 'plenty of critics in America.'"

Why does that need to be in here? What does it accomplish besides inciting hateful commentors into the comment section?

That makes two. They were paid an obscene sum of money, made on the backs of innocent victims around the world. They should give that money up to some of the families whose lives they destroyed.

No one is a "criminal" until convicted.
To my knowledge, President Bush has not been convicted (except in your mind).

You can live in your fantasy world; but President Bush will not be convicted of any crime, just as he wasn't impeached by the Dems in Congress during 2007 or 2208.

he may never be a "crimminal" by legal definition, and be convicted, but by moral/ethical standards and in the minds ofvast majority of the world, he is a war crimminal.
