The Cable:

Last night, shortly after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told journalists that the Obama administration "wants to see a stop to settlements -- not some settlements, not outposts, not natural growth exceptions," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called a confidante. Referring to Clinton's call for a settlement freeze, Netanyahu groused, "What the hell do they want from me?" according to his associate, who added, "I gathered that he heard some bad vibes in his meetings with [U.S.] congressional delegations this week."

Begin with financial reparations to Gazan survivors of your country's terrorist war crimes committed between 4 November 2008 and 20 January 2009, for repairs or reconstruction of all damaged or demolished property. And for every Gazan murdered, quadruple the going rate for suicide bomb attacks. Then prosecute everybody in your shady government involved in that criminal conspiracy.

Or you can suffer an international embargo that makes current trade in Gaza look like London, Hong Kong or New York. Despite having no other ally you have abused my great nation's loyalty and generosity. Understand your position, on the double. It's either your military industrial corporatists or your people. You cannot serve two masters.

Begin with the recognition of Israel and as a Jewish State, Then pay reparations for 61 years of suicide bombings, murders of Israeli civilians, constant attempts to destroy Israel. After the 1948 War, the areas not accepted by the Arabs was supposed top be negotiated. It was never "Palestinian" or Arab land. Unfortunately the Palestinians have never accepted any deals offered including 98% of the Westbank areas.
Gaza has fired over 10,000 rockets into Israel since Israel gave up all claims to Gaza in search of peace. Perhaps it is time to demand that the Palestinians, (both sides) agree to recognize Israel before demanding a new state that will live in peace with the Jewish state. So far, the world has had some problems with Islamic states, none of which have recognized Israel in its 61 years of existence. We seem to be blaming the victim rather than the aggressors.

I want us to walk away from the middle east peace talks and let them work it out.
They've had their chance with us. Stop all financial support. We got our own big issues.

Actually, that kind of disengagement (over the last eight years) is one of the reasons we are at this point. I agree with lbsaltzman above that this is teh time for ALL concerned for Israelis and Palestinians to actively engage and (sometimes with tough love) pushing the two sides together to get a solution.

Peace can't be achieved by sitting back and doing nothing, And while the settlements look like a big concession from the Israelis, the Palestinians will also have to compromise to, on issues likee right of return,(though I think, right now, to get them to buy into the process, massive humanitarian aid is needed now)

I agree. Stop all aid to israel and all other ME countries. Use the money to create energy independence here. Mass transit, alternatives to petroleum.

Please.

Our material support of Israel has bred an entitled arrogant country who even attacked us to maintain surprise in their attack on Egypt.

Time to stop material support and simply become old friends.

Speaking symbolically, friends don't let friends drive drunk. George Bush was more than happy to serve Israel eight years of cocktails enabling them to drive themselves further and further away from peace and security. The unhealthy symbiotic relationship between the neo cons here and the far right in Israel was to both countries detriment, as each became more isolated, aggressive and self defeating. Obama and Clinton are finally giving Israel what it needs, tough love. They clearly see the obvious, that indulging Israel's worst instincts is not in our interest, or theirs.

Oops, Netanyahu didn't get the memo? HIllary does not need Jewish voters in NY anymore. Used and cast aside. Vintage Clinton.

This man defied already a different American Pres and ended singlehandedly a peace process that was led almost to success by his predecessor as long as that was possible.
"What the he**..."? That's what I expected from this guy. He needs a picture drawn for him.

It's like "Oh you REALLY want those settlements frozen? the token gesture won't do?"

I almost feel sorry for Netanyahu, because he is now in the unenviable position that if he gives Obama (and Clinton) what they want (and are going to increasingingly put pressure on him for) --a REAL Settlement freeze (Oh, and by the way, those settlements will have to go in a final solution), his government will probably fall, because his right-wing parties (and even many in his own Likud Party) will not go along with this willingly.

But I said I only almost felt sorry for Bibi, for,as you say, he is in a catch-22 of his own choosing.

My sympathies lie with the Israelis living within the green line, forced to subsidize the ideologues, and the Palestinians, who are losing land every day, and who every day see their rights repressed without due process.

I do not want to throw my tax dollars away on mideast policies doomed to fail.
I do not want to pay to relocate israelis from the west bank.
We need mid east strategies with costs born by the mid east.

I probably will be attacked by some posters, but I am a firm believer in the two-state (two nations) solution. Netanyahu is just perpetuating an age old fight that just will continue to go back and forth, over and over, until the agression really causes all out destruction. Someone has to take the high road, and frankly both sides are at fault equally. I support Israel, but I don't think that we should follow a course that will ultimately prolong the violence or worse. The two state solution is fair and equatable and being totally obstinate and defiant about the settlements is NOT acceptable.

I believe what Obama and Clinton what Netanyahu to do is comply with the existing agreements, work on a two state solution - allowing the other state to receive supplies and food for a change and a true commitment to peace.

That is "what the hell" Obama, Clinton and millions more want of you Mr. Netanyahu.

IMO The settlements are not the obstruction, they are a response to Arab obstructionism. Israel will never agree to the right of return, so it's all just babble and froth. Huffington continues to prove that nothings changed. Age old Jew hate is once again easily roused with ignorance and lies. I have just one question, how come the Arabs do not see any self interest in wanting a resolution to this conflict? I seems quite Bi-Polary. Do they find some divine purpose in conflict?

I read here on this site just the other day that Obama and Jordan"s King Abdullah (my friend Bubba's favorite King) are working on finding a just alternative to "Right of Return"

This would be the big (and considering the amount of land and populations involved) I mean BIB concession on the Palestinians' part.

I do , however find it ironic that you talk about the big problems being "Arab obstructionism" in that they will not CONCEDE a RIGHT of RETURN (HOW THOUGHTLESS OF THEM!!!) But there is NO problem with Israel building ILLEGAL settlements in occupied land!

cognitive dissonance much?
