WARREN, Pa. — A northwestern Pennsylvania newspaper is apologizing for running a classified advertisement calling for the assassination of President Barack Obama.

Warren Times Observer Publisher John Elchert says the ad appeared Thursday. It read, "May Obama follow in the steps of Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley and Kennedy!" The four presidents were all assassinated.

Elchert tells The Associated Press that the newspaper's advertising staff didn't make the historical connection.

He says the newspaper turned information over to police and that the Secret Service is investigating the person who placed the ad.

A note in Friday's paper says the newspaper "apologizes for the oversight."

I guess this is another demonstration about how poor our educational system is. Not one of these individuals were able to make the very obvious connection? I guess they were thrown off by Garfield and McKinley, thinking one to be a cartoon cat and the other the name of a mountain.

Unbelievable! ANYONE who even read that "ad" should have known what it was advocating. If they didn't, then they should get out of the newspaper business.

Just amazing! Not even the least popular President in recent history, GWB got this kind of treatment, no one called for harm to come to him. Where is your outrage people, your silence makes it okay, no President should ever come to harm from anyone, especially his own countryman. Its disgraceful!

The paper's editors, along with the person who placed the ad, should be arrested. Threatening or inciting to kill the president is treason.

Stupidity is not illegal. Unfortunately. The person who placed the ad is the one who committed the illegality.

So you believe that a newspaper's - any American newspaper's - editors are unaware of the common link between Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley and Kennedy?

Even if they are dumb enough not to realize Garfield and McKinley were assassinated, how would they not catch the reference to Kennedy and Lincoln? People who subscribe to such a paper would be wise to cancel their subscriptions. What kind of a newspaper doesn't make such a glaring connection?

Haha you should walk around your local town with the ad and see how many people won't even come close to making the connection.

Anyway makes historical fact retention such a good measure of intelligence?

I have written this on this site and I will ask it again:Pray for this president! I simply do NOT recall anyone in the "liberal" or progressive media or regular "anti-Bush" crowd calling for Bush's assasination. No one wants to admit it, but a lot of this is modern day racism on the part of Hannity/Beck/Limbaugh!!! I NEVER heard them calling for the assasination of Clinton or Gore..

I agree. You don't have to scratch the surface very deeply and the old racism pours out. I am optimistic that when all of us older people, who were brought up in a much more racist world, are dead then society will be better.

Who in the media has called for the assasination of any president?

Glenn Beck said that Obama was a vampire and the only way to be rid of a vampire was to put a stake through its heart. Sorry that sounds like a message encouraging people to kill the man to me.

In her book, "High Crimes and Misdemeanors", Ann Coulter stated that the question was "whether to impeach or assassinate" Clinton.

Quote:
"In this recurring nightmare of a presidency, we have a national debate about whether he 'did it,' even though all sentient people know he did. Otherwise there would be debates only about whether to impeach or assassinate."

Then there's G. Gordon Liddy, who used to "joke" that when he went shooting, he named his targets, "Bill and Hillary Clinton".

When Lincoln was assasinated, people throughout America, whatever their political affiliation, went rampaging looking for the killer, lynching people who looked like the suspect (Booth), burning down property suspected or even rumored to be associated with the plot.

Napolitano was right to warn about a rise in rightwing, white supremist, Aryan power extremism. This Warren Times Observer should either be completely cleansed of its editorial staff, or it should be stripped of press credentials, fined, etc. for advocating such a crime. Its no surprise that the terrorism of 'white men' is tolerated and excused but everyone else's political opposition is unconscionable, (ala Reve Wright, decorated war hero).

Any newspaper staff that doesn't make that historical connection needs to be fired.

This is sedition. Is the FBI investigating?
