LOS ANGELES — Phil Spector was sentenced Friday to 19 years to life in prison for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson, who was shot through the mouth in the music producer's home six years ago. Spector, 69, looked straight forward and showed no emotion as Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler ordered a term of 15 years to life for second-degree murder plus four years for personal use of a gun.

Clarkson's mother, Donna, made a brief statement before sentencing, speaking of her daughter's fine qualities, sense of humor, intelligence and dedication to her craft of acting.

"I'm very proud of Lana, proud to be her mother," Donna Clarkson said. She added, "No one should suffer the loss of a child."

The judge also ordered Spector to pay $16,811 in funeral expenses, $9,740 to a state victims' restitution fund and other fees.

Spector, dressed in his customary dark pinstripe suit with a red silk tie, was led away immediately. His attorney asked that he be transferred immediately from county jail to a state prison. It was not immediately known to which prison Spector would be assigned.

Spector gained fame decades ago for what became known as the "Wall of Sound" recording technique that changed rock music.

Clarkson was most famous as the star of Roger Corman's 1985 cult film classic "Barbarian Queen." She was 40 when she died.

Spector's young wife, who is in her late 20s, attended the sentencing.

"This is a sad day for everybody involved," Rachelle Spector said. "The Clarkson family has lost a daughter and a sister. I've lost my husband, my best friend. I feel that a grave injustice has been done and from this day forward I'm going to dedicate myself to proving my husband's innocence."

Spector's son Louis, accompanied by his wife, also came to the sentencing. He had attended much of the trial.

"I'm torn about this," he said. "I'm losing my father who is going to spend his life in jail. At the same time, justice is served."

Deputy District Attorney Alan Jackson said afterward that the outcome sent a message: "If you commit crimes against our citizens we will follow you and prosecute you. And no matter whether you are famous or wealthy, you will stand trial."

Asked how he felt about Spector personally, Jackson said, "I find nothing tragic about him. Everything he did was intentional."

Jackson said the case was "rock solid" legally and will not be subject to a successful appeal.

Defense attorney Doron Weinberg told reporters that the appeal will be extremely strong.

"Mr. Spector did not kill Lana Clarkson," he said, "and we hope by the time we are through we will be able to prove that."

Spector had two trials with essentially the same evidence. His first in 2007 was televised gavel to gavel and spectators flocked to the courtroom. But when the jury deadlocked after a five-month trial, his legal "dream team," which at times numbered half a dozen lawyers, bailed out.

By the time the second trial started in 2008, interest had waned. The judge ordered cameras turned off and only a handful of spectators and reporters stopped in sporadically to watch testimony.

During jury selection, only a few panelists remembered Spector's heyday as producer of teen anthems including "To Know Him is to Love Him" by The Teddy Bears, The Ronette's "Be My Baby," The Crystals' "Da Doo Ron Ron" and The Righteous Brothers' classic, "You've Lost that Lovin' Feelin'." Spector also worked on a Beatles album with John Lennon.

Ironically, Clarkson didn't know Spector's music legacy either when she met him only hours before she died at his Alhambra "castle" in February 2003. She was working as a hostess at the House of Blues nightclub on the Sunset Strip, where she had to be told by a manager that Spector was an important man.

His time had passed. Clarkson's career also was ebbing. Their fateful meeting, recounted in both trials, led to her death and the end of his life as he knew it. For the next six years he spent millions of dollars on lawyers as he sought to prove that Clarkson killed herself.

But what had happened inside his house was never clear. Clarkson's body was found slumped in a chair in a foyer. A gun had been fired in her mouth. Spector's chauffeur, the key witness, said he heard a gunshot, then saw Spector emerge holding a gun and heard him say: "I think I killed somebody."

Weinberg said forensic evidence proved that Clarkson shot herself and cited her desperation at not being able to get acting work. Jackson said the shooting fit the pattern of other confrontations between Spector and women.

Much of the case hinged on the testimony of five women from Spector's past who said he threatened them with guns when they tried to leave his presence. The parallels with the night Clarkson died were chilling even if the stories were very old _ 31 years in one instance.

Weinberg said Spector's appeal will assert that the judge erred in allowing the women to testify.

i was just thinking that rachelle spector could have joined forces with oj looking for the real killers at various golf courses and nightclubs around the country, but oops..he's in jail for robbery, but really, we all know, murder.
i hope mrs spector loses the spector fortune in the civil suit....for sure her payday for marrying him will be drastically reduced. oh wait, she married him because he is so loving and kind, handsome and a real giver. good luck to her. whatever she gets, she's gonna really earn.

I thought the same thing. None of this had to happen. If someone, anyone, had the courage of their convictions 30 years ago when he was pulling guns on people left and right, and called a cop to have him locked up. He got away with bullying for years, and left unchecked people will finally snap and do what they have always threatened to do.

Never cared for him after I read Ronnie Spector's autobiography. He made Ike Turner look like husband of the year.

Well, James Brown could be in that bad husband club too. But it's about time Phil Spector got put away. His wife Ronnie's experience with this maniac was chilling. Spector has a very long track record of playing with guns(putting them in women's orifices) and acting out in a violent way towards women, but his money and influence kept him out of jail. Even his own son says justice was served. Now that he is almost 70, probably be put in the geriatric ward...after he goes through detox and withdrawal.

Whiles she looking for justice, Phil's wife can also pick up where O.J. left off and try and find the real killer in that case...

I believe he is guilty but I believe that allowing those 5 women to testify to prior acts tainted the jury. Am I correct that none of those 5 women sought out criminal or civil admonishment for any of Spector's previous behavior? As much as I dislike saying it, if that's the case, he deserves another trial.

What does one have to do with the other? They testified as to how he acted towards them, and there was nothing to suggest any had an agenda. There is a list a mile long of people he threatened and pulled guns on. It would have been better for him if someone had filed charges, because he would have lost his guns if convicted. All he had to do was sit back and collect the royalties on all those songs he produced, but he finally went a step too far. If you have five women saying he pulled guns on them, that would seem to indicate a pattern.

Exactly my point! One has nothing to do with the other. Their (5 women) testimony was prejudicial and tainted the jury.

Maybe some of thesse other women were too intimiadted by Spectro's repupation in the industry to sue him or bring charges against him. They also may have been exptremely fearful. Anyone would be if someone had pulled a gun on them. howveer knowing that Spector was really up on charges of murder is something else and that provides a comfort zone for witnesses to testify.

I've never heard of anyone commiting suicide with a witness, and especially a woman with a gun who shoots herself in the face. Suicide is a lonely act. Except for this who have jumped off bridges, people leave notes but never witnesses.

It is called character witnesses. And obvious legal reason they were allowed. Maybe out of fear, they said nothing, they just stayed away. Someone with his money could make someone disappear if they brought up a criminal case against him, not like he would sit in jail untl a trial for just brandishing a gun and threatening. He would get out on his own recognisance, and with his temper probably would lead him to do worse.

Sounds like these character witnesses had a vendetta against Spector. Look, I said I believe he is guilty but still, we have to honor his civil rights to have a fair trial.

He's had two already. Nope, he's guilty as the day is long and for that he gets the opportunity to die in prison.

I will vouch for how naive people in the music industry can be,this guy is what we see in bad movies and when it becomes real you can get so afraid that you want to cut and run and not cause any waves that might get you very hurt . Like his son says and knows from first hand experience -justice is served, please don't discount these women 's statements they spoke from their hearts not for fame and fortune . Nobody wants to hate this guy he brought it on himself.

Given his age, he'll probably go to a medium-security facility with the comfortable, loose-fitting jumpsuits.

I suppose he'll get paroled in half this time but he'd still be 78 or so and he'll probably die in prison and that's a good place to end his miserable life.

I'm shocked that he's convicted. For how long the trial took...and all the arguments...I thought, that it was actually the girl's fault that she ended up dead--at least that's how it seemed to me.

You don't go to a stranger's house in the middle of the night to kill yourself with a gun in the front hallway, especially when you don't own a gun.

I suspect that when Lana refused to go any further into his house, when she insisted that she was going to leave, that Spector put his gun (the one he always carries with him) into her mouth and pulled the trigger. That's what the evidence showed, by the way, including Spector's statement to his driver that he had actually just done that.

you honestly thought it was at all conceivable that she went to some guys house and decided to kill her self? the same day she bought 6 pairs of shoes for her new job? the same night phil walked out of the house holding a gun and said." i think i killed somebody?' an actress who went to the guy's house because she was told he could help with her career decided that that would be a good place to off herself? wow.... those defense juries must love you when youre on jury duty. i fear for our legal system i really do. theres a sucker born more than every minute.
