BAGHDAD — The U.S. military says an American soldier has been killed in a grenade attack in northern Iraq.

That raises the number of American troop deaths so far in May to at least 21 _ the deadliest month for American forces in Iraq since September, when 25 died.

A statement says the grenade detonated Friday near a patrol in the northern province of Ninevah.

It doesn't give more details. But insurgent activity has continued in Ninevah and the provincial capital of Mosul despite security gains elsewhere in Iraq.

At least 4,303 members of the U.S. military have died in Iraq since the war began in March 2003. That's according to an Associated Press count.

Confusing paragraph about the number being 21 or 25 killed in May. As they are all ours whether the number is up or down it is not a number I like. When I hear Cheney talking his "points" and attempting to protect himself and what he has done it angers me more! 4000 plus dead, thousands wounded, too many suicides and PTSD all because Bush and Cheney wanted to be war presidents. Neither one really wanted to be soldiers but killing of our own makes it like genocide because of these guys and those who "helped" with the torture memos and orders and on to the next things. The need to be there manufactured by several who will never face punishment in the human sense and wear prison garb. I am saddened whether the soldiers die over there or here.....

The people of Iran were led to believe ALL our troops would be out by 2011. Recent statements have contradicted that understanding. This may be the beginning of a new insurgency and in itself gives us an excuse to stay.

The increase in violence may be what we want.

The overwhelming majority want us to leave, and there is NO evidence that we intend to do it. Our grand daughte's husband just got shipped out to Iraq. (what's going on here)

Bring ALL our troops home.

The headline claims 25 in May - but the text of the article says 21. Either we're tied with September - or we've still got a couple of days to get there.
