Wikipedia has banned the Church of Scientology and its members from editing its site after discovering that members of the church were editing articles in order to give the church favorable coverage.

The move is being hailed as "an unprecedented effort to crack down on self-serving edits," and it is the first instance in which Wikipedia has banned a group as large as the Church of Scientology.

The Register reports:

According to evidence turned up by admins in this long-running Wikiland court case, multiple editors have been "openly editing [Scientology-related articles] from Church of Scientology equipment and apparently coordinating their activities." Leaning on the famed WikiScanner, countless news stories have discussed the editing of Scientology articles from Scientology IPs, and some site admins are concerned this is "damaging Wikipedia's reputation for neutrality."

One admin tells The Reg that policing edits from Scientology machines has been particularly difficult because myriad editors sit behind a small number of IPs and, for some reason, the address of each editor is constantly changing. This prevents admins from determining whether a single editor is using multiple Wikipedia accounts to game the system. In Wikiland, such sockpuppeting is not allowed.

The Wikicourt considered banning edits from Scientology IPs only on Scientology-related articles. But this would require admins to "checkuser" editors - i.e. determine their IP - every time an edit is made. And even then they may not know who's who.

The case — the fourth Scientology-related dispute on the site in four years — opened in December 2008 and closed Thursday with the Wikipedia arbitration committee voting unanimously to block IP addresses associated with the Church from editing the site.

"The purpose of Wikipedia is to create a high-quality, free-content encyclopedia in an atmosphere of camaraderie and mutual respect among contributors," part of the decision read. "Use of the encyclopedia to advance personal agendas - such as advocacy or propaganda and philosophical, ideological or religious dispute - or to publish or promote original research is prohibited."

"Editors who access Wikipedia through an organization's IP address and who edit Wikipedia articles which relate to that organization have a presumptive conflict of interest," it continued. "Regardless of these editors' specific relationship to that organization or function within it, the organization itself bears a responsibility for appropriate use of its servers and equipment. If an organization fails to manage that responsibility, Wikipedia may address persistent violations of fundamental site policies through blocks or bans."

Story continues below

Scientology, the committee concluded, is so controversial a subject that it requires special oversight for the site's purposes:

3.0) This longstanding dispute is a struggle between two rival factions: admirers of Scientology and critics of Scientology.

A) Editors from each side have gamed policy to obtain advantage and disputes have spilled over into, for example, articles for deletion, the reliable sources noticeboard, the conflict of interests noticeboard, and sometimes the administrators' noticeboard.

B) Aggravating factors have been (i) the presence of editors openly editing from Church of Scientology equipment and apparently coordinating their activities; and (ii) the apparent presence of notable critics of Scientology, from several Internet organisations, apparently editing under their own names and citing either their own or each other's self-published material.

C) Each side wishes the articles within this topic to reflect their point of view and have resorted to battlefield editing tactics, with edits being abruptly reverted without any attempt to incorporate what is good, to maintain their preferred status quo.

D) The worst casualties have been biographies of living people, where attempts have been repeatedly made to slant the article either towards or against the subject, depending on the point of view of the contributing editor.

E) However, this problem is not limited to biographies and many Scientology articles fail to reflect a neutral point of view and instead are either disparaging or complimentary.

Read the full decision here.

Okay Jeffrey Barea, I"m responding directly to you. You said you'd like a discussion. Let's do it. And no, I'm not in the Office of Special Affairs for goodness sake. Everyone is so paranoid. As for those picking on Ron Paul, that's fine with me. My name is RonPaulFan, not RonPaulKoolAidDrinker. I don't agree with everything he says, and it disturbs me that so many of you swallow everything that either President Obama, or on the other side, President Bush, say. No one speaks for me, but me. I like many things about President Obama, and also dislike many things about his policies. There's nothing wrong with having individual thoughts. You all should try it some time. It's the same with your views and ignorance about Scientology.

I have a great deal of respect for Scientology for a couple of reasons:

1) Taking on the failed and destrutive Psychiatry industry
After 50 years in practice, other than continuing to perform electro-shock therapy and lobotomies, they have also gone into cahoots with big pharma to medicate the world. Where I live, prescription drugs are far exceeding "illict' drugs on the streets. Most perscribed by doctors with state contracts paid for by us the tax payers. Scientology wants to put these folks out of business and rightfully so.

2) Narcanon - one of the most succssful programs drug addiction programs in existance
It has been adopted by Italy and other countries because of its effacacy.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:07 PM on 05/29/2009

You do realize they are trying to debunk psychiatry because it directly contradicts their own teachings and is their primary competition? They aren't so much trying to put them out of business as take their customers.
Also, lobotomies were never a common procedure, and fell out of favor more than 30 years ago following the successful creation of antipsychotic medication. Today the practice has all but vanished entirely. It's even illegal in some countries.

Yeah, they stopped lobotamies in mass since the 1980's however they still take place. I noticed you didn't mention anything about electro-shock therapy. As for antipsychotic medication, maybe they were "successful [in the] creation of antipsychotic medication", however from "successful" in benefits to our society as promised. Prozac in our ground water, suicides due to failed and lax regulation and testing and as mentioned in my previous post, state-contracted doctors handing out perscriptions in exchange for golf and weekend junkets to the point where vicadin, xanax, etc. are edging in on the crack and meth marketshare on the streets.

Scientology sued the Cult Awareness Network (CAN) for saying they were a cult. In a bizzarre settlement, the courts awarded the organization (CAN itself) to Scientology. Now if you call CAN their reponse is that "Heavens no, Scientology isn't a cult. We'd be happy to send you some information on them." Seriously twisted!!!!

One of Scientology's proselytizing tactics is to show up and render aid to populations that have been traumatized. Little do they know these victims will be further victimized by Scientology. They are not doing this out of kindness, but seeking new victims for their financial schemes. It's like dracula showing up to volunteer at a blood bank.

Noone who has learned critical thinking (i..e; a college education) would ever fall for Scientology's pitch. They require vast hordes of uneducated schlubs, and uneducated movie stars (Travolta, Cruise, Allie, Ribisi), etc. to advance their toxic ideas.

Time magazine exposed them in an extremely disturbing cover story available here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thriving_cult_of_greed_and_power

As long as I breathe, I will caution people about these lunatics.

I agree, I also want to warn people as often as I can. I met a woman who had been in the cult at the lowest level. They give you a script to read and make you call all your relatives to get LOTS of money. I believe you start by asking for $10,000.

They all lived together and were not allowed to go out except when they were working, inviting people off the streets to come in and learn more. She also told me of physical beatings for people who didn't behave.

When I met her, this woman had just returned home from San Fran and she was absolutely traumatized; she was not making any of this up.

I looked into it, spending hours researching all I could and it gets scarier and weirder. There have been a few deaths resulting from their practices. If you can stomach it, I urge everyone to research this. It is gruesome and needs to be exposed.

The science of psychology does need a lot more progress to be valuable. But Scientology trying to gleen the people who need psycological help is the caged snake eating a baby rat. It is a vulnerable situation

Same with Narcanon. Same wih the Christians and AA. All of these recruit by selling their diety as a savior over their adiction. Vultures to the vulnerable.

Although I will admit I'm not sure how Ron Paul got pulled into this discussion (I haven't read all the comments so I'm sure I'll see it eventually) If we're going to use his own words than perhaps there are some that are especially interesting to me:

From The Revolution: A Manifesto:

A substantial portion of the conservative movement has become a parody of its former self. Once home to distinguished intellectuals and men of letters, it now tolerates and even encourages anti-intellectualism and jingoism that would have embarrassed earlier generations of conservative thinkers.

Iran, incidentally, may have noticed a pattern: if countries do have a nuclear weapon, they tend to be left alone, or possibly even given a subsidy. If they do not gain such a weapon they find themselves threatened with war. With that kind of foreign policy, what country wouldn’t want to pursue a nuclear weapon?

and my personal favorite:

Neoconservatives, the false conservatives

I'm not saying I agree with everything he says but at least I respect him...unlike the Palins, Limboughs, O'Reillys, Hannitys and all the other re-DUH-plicans out there

L

The Church of Scientology is a ruthlesss and dangerous cult that masquerades as a religion. Its purpose is to make money.
On the surface, Scientology seems reasonable. The insane content is only revealed after the member has been "cleared" and made more susceptible. They practice a variety of brain-washing and mind-control techniques on weak-minded people. Its aim is to enslave them to further its wicked ends.
The writings of their founder are incontrovertible testimony to this wickedness.
Revelations from God are not transmitted through con men.

This seems like a silly decision to make
Wikipedia already has a policy that if you work for an organization you aren't supposed to edit that page.
So for instance a priest is already supposed to be excluded
But saying anyone who is a member can't edit is pretty crazy.
Its like saying Christians can't edit the Christianity page.
Or to take it the extreme, english speaking people can't edit the english section of wikipedia.

Arguments should be won or lost on their merits not the messenger. That's the whole point of a place like wikipedia. Everyone is anonymous . It only matters what you say not who you claim to be.

And its pretty trivial too because there isn't really any way of enforcing it. They can try to ban individual IPs but any good troll knows how to use a proxy server.

I think the point is that the edits weren't made in good faith. Had they had the appearance of neutrality, Scientology might have gotten away with it. The problem here is that members of Scientology went a bit crazy and made a ridiculous amount of work for the members of wiki to the point that they had to take extreme measures to keep them from vandalizing the wiki.

When one person or a group of people make more work for admins than anyone else because they are behaving like children and they know better, they deserve to be banned.

And yes, they can use a proxy server but they've been warned. It's not the first time an org has been caught but it does draw attention to what they've been doing which is probably what wiki wanted all along.

The banning was probably secondary.

The following are all quotes attributed to L. Ron Hubbard.

“I'd like to start a religion. That's where the money is!"

“Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man really wants to make a million dollars, the best way would be to start his own religion."

“THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN CONTROL PEOPLE IS TO LIE TO THEM. You can write that down in your book in great big letters. The only way you can control anybody is to lie to them."

“Not smoking enough will cause lung cancer!"

“ MAKE MONEY. MAKE MORE MONEY. MAKE OTHER PEOPLE PRODUCE SO AS TO MAKE MORE MONEY."

I wonder how you would react if you came home from work one day ( I am assuming you have a job) and found out that your significant other ( agian i am assuming you have one of those as well) had donated your house to that cult.

If I came home own day and found the entire house had been donated, I would feel really stupid for being with that person first of all.

But its kind of unrealistic, Is your name on the deed? Is the property in your name? Is property that is jointly able to be donated with the consent of only one of the owners?

Scientology has the same right to exist as the other religions; and we have the responsibility to ridicule it at least as much as the other religions. Banning religious practices leads to matyrdom, don't give them that publicity advantage.

I've come to realize, based on the comments in this blog, that most of you don't seem to have a college education. I say that based on the fact that I keep reading entries about how strange this cult is, where as with any basic study you would see that the way the Church of Scientology operates is completely normal for a religion in it's first century of creation. I now realize why so many arguments I've read seem so illogical. So let me be the one to say that I'm sorry. It's not fair to expect a good argument, comments or debate from the uneducated. Again, I'm sorry. I'll watch Bill Maher tonight since he uses facts and logic whereas the majority on this blog say things like, "wiki is cool", (yeah taking sides against only one religion is fantastic) or "scientology is expensive" (Christianity is poor I know, I feel so sorry for those broken down mega churches and millionaire preachers) or "scientologists believe in weird things" (because after all believers in Allah and his prophet Muhammad are completely logical, right?) Wow.
