Wikipedia has banned the Church of Scientology and its members from editing its site after discovering that members of the church were editing articles in order to give the church favorable coverage.

The move is being hailed as "an unprecedented effort to crack down on self-serving edits," and it is the first instance in which Wikipedia has banned a group as large as the Church of Scientology.

The Register reports:

According to evidence turned up by admins in this long-running Wikiland court case, multiple editors have been "openly editing [Scientology-related articles] from Church of Scientology equipment and apparently coordinating their activities." Leaning on the famed WikiScanner, countless news stories have discussed the editing of Scientology articles from Scientology IPs, and some site admins are concerned this is "damaging Wikipedia's reputation for neutrality."

One admin tells The Reg that policing edits from Scientology machines has been particularly difficult because myriad editors sit behind a small number of IPs and, for some reason, the address of each editor is constantly changing. This prevents admins from determining whether a single editor is using multiple Wikipedia accounts to game the system. In Wikiland, such sockpuppeting is not allowed.

The Wikicourt considered banning edits from Scientology IPs only on Scientology-related articles. But this would require admins to "checkuser" editors - i.e. determine their IP - every time an edit is made. And even then they may not know who's who.

The case — the fourth Scientology-related dispute on the site in four years — opened in December 2008 and closed Thursday with the Wikipedia arbitration committee voting unanimously to block IP addresses associated with the Church from editing the site.

"The purpose of Wikipedia is to create a high-quality, free-content encyclopedia in an atmosphere of camaraderie and mutual respect among contributors," part of the decision read. "Use of the encyclopedia to advance personal agendas - such as advocacy or propaganda and philosophical, ideological or religious dispute - or to publish or promote original research is prohibited."

"Editors who access Wikipedia through an organization's IP address and who edit Wikipedia articles which relate to that organization have a presumptive conflict of interest," it continued. "Regardless of these editors' specific relationship to that organization or function within it, the organization itself bears a responsibility for appropriate use of its servers and equipment. If an organization fails to manage that responsibility, Wikipedia may address persistent violations of fundamental site policies through blocks or bans."

Story continues below
advertisement

Scientology, the committee concluded, is so controversial a subject that it requires special oversight for the site's purposes:

3.0) This longstanding dispute is a struggle between two rival factions: admirers of Scientology and critics of Scientology.

A) Editors from each side have gamed policy to obtain advantage and disputes have spilled over into, for example, articles for deletion, the reliable sources noticeboard, the conflict of interests noticeboard, and sometimes the administrators' noticeboard.

B) Aggravating factors have been (i) the presence of editors openly editing from Church of Scientology equipment and apparently coordinating their activities; and (ii) the apparent presence of notable critics of Scientology, from several Internet organisations, apparently editing under their own names and citing either their own or each other's self-published material.

C) Each side wishes the articles within this topic to reflect their point of view and have resorted to battlefield editing tactics, with edits being abruptly reverted without any attempt to incorporate what is good, to maintain their preferred status quo.

D) The worst casualties have been biographies of living people, where attempts have been repeatedly made to slant the article either towards or against the subject, depending on the point of view of the contributing editor.

E) However, this problem is not limited to biographies and many Scientology articles fail to reflect a neutral point of view and instead are either disparaging or complimentary.

Read the full decision here.

Comic Zantor, you say Scientology operates like a cult? Gee really? I suppose the "cult of Christ" as it was known didn't? I really don't mean offense, but have you ever taken a course on theology? If so, you would know that all new religions are called, considered, and behave as a cult.

Since my other post didn't make it:

Scientology is a tiny tiny tiny religion that bares absolutely no consequence in your life or the world. Islam and Christianity on the other hand...Well in particular extremist muslims, cut people's heads off and blow themselves up, Christianity tells Africans that condoms are bad, so H.I.V continues to spread like wild fire...But yes I realize it's easier just to keep bashing little ol' Scientology in order to make yourselves feel better.

I'm not a Scientologist, but I like it when people think for themselves and don't buy into jargon that is fed to them. It's just like all the talk about how Scientology costs so much money. Why do you care? When's the last time a Scientologist knocked on your door trying to convert you? The answer is never. Scientologist only bother other Scientologist into taking more courses. And to those who talk about the "money" it takes, I guess you haven't been to a Baptist mega church lately or read any books about all the real estate holdings of the Vatican. All I ask of you, is to read.

AmandaBC, you say "only if you have a great lawyer." Can you please tell me the last time Scientology has sued a person? Surely, you're not still using the same old news from the 90's? I don't remember Keith Olberman, Bill Maher, Jon Stewart or anyone else that makes fun of them or criticizes them being sued. So please, remind me? I'm very curious as to the year of the last time the church has sued an individual. Please AmandaBC, please tell me you don't just write comments based on things you hear second hand?

AmandaBC, made a joke, based on the reputation the CoS has for being extremely litigious. And they didn't get that reputation for no reason.

And I have certainly heard Bill Maher and Jon Stewart criticize all other religion/cults too.

The Vatican doesn't thugs out to destroy your reputation. The Vatican doesn't charge you money to learn what they believe. The Vatican doesn't refuse life-saving psychiatric care. The Vatican doesn't make all your friends and family cut themselves off.

The Vatican doesn't force you to have an abortion. The Vatican actually pays a fair wage to its workers.

All things the Church of Scientology takes the opposite approach.

How many other true believers will work to distort reality as reported in Wiki?

We will need reputable organizations presenting their thoughts more than ever.

As on earth, there will be a weekly gathering of the righteous in Heaven to worship the Creator on Sunday mornings.
On our way to Church, there will be a window through which He|| may be viewed. We'll gaze at the torturred bodies of the unrepentant and the infidels and hear the wailing of the lost, tormented with fire and brimstone for all eternity. The window will serve as a vivid reminder to the redeemed about the consequences of sin.
This leads many people to ask, “How can I rejoice in the Heavenly abode knowing full well that a close family member has been condemnd to He||?”
In Heaven, the righteous will fully comprehend the exceeding sinfulness of sin. They will understand God's perspective. They will look upon those iniquitous family members with utter contempt, guilty sinners who deserve their fiery fate.
God is love.

Yesterday, in the tiny part-time branch library in the tiny town where I live, I was looking through the old books for sale and came upon two sealed copies of a DVD called, "Scientology: an Overview". The librarian had no idea where they'd come from. Even in a one-horse town like mine we're not safe from their propaganda.

The blurb says the DVD "presents more than 80 videos describing the basic beliefs and practices of the Scientology religion". Notwithstanding, the DVDs make very attractive coasters.

So they charge a lot of money to find this out? Again, why do you care? When's the last time a Scientologist knocked on your door and tried to convert you? The answer is, never. Scientologists hound other Scientologist for "more courses" "more auditing"- they don't even bother with non scientologists. Furthermore, have any of you been to a Baptist church lately? They're mega complexes. And let's not even get into the Catholic church's wealth.

And then I read, "Well no other church sues journalists." Again, this is ancient and outdated info. Everyone makes fun of Scientology now, and the Church of Scientology no longer sues anyone. And by the way, can someone explain to me why it's so weird that a new religion/cult, would attack those who disagree with them? Again, and I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but do any of you read history or the accounts of early cults called Islam and Christianity? Keep in mind, Islam didn't spread due to their great ideas, it spread based on the sword.

Scientology is a tiny religion that bares absolutely no consequence in your life or the world. Islam and Christianity on the other hand...Well particular muslims cut people's heads off and blow themselves up, Christianity tells Africans that condoms are bad, so H.I.V continues to spread like wild fire...But yes I realize it's easier just to keep bashing little ol' Scientology in order to make yourselves feel better.

The reason why most of you on this blog, and tv shows such as The Daily Show, and Bill Maher, Keith Olberman, Bill O'Reilly, etc. all ridicule and bash Scientology, is because it's SAFE to ridicule Scientology. Notice that Wiki is not doing this to editors of Islam, Christianity or Judaism. I've read comments saying, "But they believe in Aliens." To that I say, so what? How is that your business, and why is that so weird?

I read that they're weird because they're against anti depression/anxiety meds, etc. So is the University of Maryland a Scientology school? After all, they recently released a disturbing study, which found that American children are FOUR TIMES more likely to be on anti anxiety medication than European children. And yet European children have free health insurance. Do any of you find that strange? All that is happening, is our kids are becoming zombies while big pharma makes more billions of dollars.

Europe has prudently gone secular, and is living in relative peace because of that. But the process took time. Religion serves to fuel wwars and encourage division. Bravo to Germany for banning (whatever that means) another cult from taking up residence in their country to hoodwink citizens.
