Wikipedia Scientology

Wikipedia has banned the Church of Scientology and its members from editing its site after discovering that members of the church were editing articles in order to give the church favorable coverage.

The move is being hailed as "an unprecedented effort to crack down on self-serving edits," and it is the first instance in which Wikipedia has banned a group as large as the Church of Scientology.

The Register reports:

According to evidence turned up by admins in this long-running Wikiland court case, multiple editors have been "openly editing [Scientology-related articles] from Church of Scientology equipment and apparently coordinating their activities." Leaning on the famed WikiScanner, countless news stories have discussed the editing of Scientology articles from Scientology IPs, and some site admins are concerned this is "damaging Wikipedia's reputation for neutrality."

One admin tells The Reg that policing edits from Scientology machines has been particularly difficult because myriad editors sit behind a small number of IPs and, for some reason, the address of each editor is constantly changing. This prevents admins from determining whether a single editor is using multiple Wikipedia accounts to game the system. In Wikiland, such sockpuppeting is not allowed.

The Wikicourt considered banning edits from Scientology IPs only on Scientology-related articles. But this would require admins to "checkuser" editors - i.e. determine their IP - every time an edit is made. And even then they may not know who's who.

The case — the fourth Scientology-related dispute on the site in four years — opened in December 2008 and closed Thursday with the Wikipedia arbitration committee voting unanimously to block IP addresses associated with the Church from editing the site.

"The purpose of Wikipedia is to create a high-quality, free-content encyclopedia in an atmosphere of camaraderie and mutual respect among contributors," part of the decision read. "Use of the encyclopedia to advance personal agendas - such as advocacy or propaganda and philosophical, ideological or religious dispute - or to publish or promote original research is prohibited."

"Editors who access Wikipedia through an organization's IP address and who edit Wikipedia articles which relate to that organization have a presumptive conflict of interest," it continued. "Regardless of these editors' specific relationship to that organization or function within it, the organization itself bears a responsibility for appropriate use of its servers and equipment. If an organization fails to manage that responsibility, Wikipedia may address persistent violations of fundamental site policies through blocks or bans."

Story continues below

Scientology, the committee concluded, is so controversial a subject that it requires special oversight for the site's purposes:

3.0) This longstanding dispute is a struggle between two rival factions: admirers of Scientology and critics of Scientology.

A) Editors from each side have gamed policy to obtain advantage and disputes have spilled over into, for example, articles for deletion, the reliable sources noticeboard, the conflict of interests noticeboard, and sometimes the administrators' noticeboard.

B) Aggravating factors have been (i) the presence of editors openly editing from Church of Scientology equipment and apparently coordinating their activities; and (ii) the apparent presence of notable critics of Scientology, from several Internet organisations, apparently editing under their own names and citing either their own or each other's self-published material.

C) Each side wishes the articles within this topic to reflect their point of view and have resorted to battlefield editing tactics, with edits being abruptly reverted without any attempt to incorporate what is good, to maintain their preferred status quo.

D) The worst casualties have been biographies of living people, where attempts have been repeatedly made to slant the article either towards or against the subject, depending on the point of view of the contributing editor.

E) However, this problem is not limited to biographies and many Scientology articles fail to reflect a neutral point of view and instead are either disparaging or complimentary.

Wiki did the right thing, but, they'll just start using their home computers to do it. They are brainwashed by L. Ron's BS and think anything they do to someone who is not of the Church is fair and right.

They ought to sell the wiki, walk away and let someone else start anew. Create again the spirit in which it started.

They could have solved this problem by having a pro and con pages, but these self-righteous so called "editors" just had to feel important. They do this all over the place - petty rules and regulation which closes the wiki out to people who aren't as anal retentive as a number of people who sit, bot guard and flag for anything to feel important.

No one should contribute or support that.

The wiki is dead. RIP

From Wiki:

In the OT levels, Hubbard explains how to reverse the effects of past-life trauma patterns that supposedly extend millions of years into the past. Among these advanced teachings is the story of Xenu (sometimes Xemu), introduced as an alien ruler of the "Galactic Confederacy." According to this story, 75 million years ago Xenu brought billions of people to Earth in spacecraft resembling Douglas DC-8 airliners, stacked them around volcanoes and detonated hydrogen bombs in the volcanoes. The thetans then clustered together, stuck to the bodies of the living, and continue to do this today. Scientologists at advanced levels place considerable emphasis on isolating body thetans and neutralizing their ill effects.

It costs about $20,000 or more to get to this data as I hear it. OT7 and OT8 are pretty strange as well. Thankfully all this is online now.

The Wikicensors had better be careful. Don't they know that you don't mess with Scientology?

The previously run down city of Clearwater, FL has been devoured by this cult, blue uniformed Flag members walking the streets, all the devalued real estate bought up and renovated for their use, the medical examiner hounded out of office after the death of a mentally ill member in their "care," city elected officials becoming their water carriers, legit drug treatment oranization taken over and anti-psych counselers put in their place to waylay unsuspecting people looking for help---and nobody dares cross them for fear of being targeted by slander and lawsuits.

Why Clinton actually agreed to grant them status as a religion is a mystery. Added insult to the tax exempt status of accepted religions that make millions on businesses.

You're right about the mystery surrounding their tax-exempt status. For 30 years, the U.S. government refused tax-exempt status. But just 5 years after Scientology was exposed as having falsified records and conducting a harassment campaign, the commissioner of the IRS singlehandedly gives it to them, under suspicious circumstances.

http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/Cowen/essays/nytimes.html

More than 15 years later and they still use this to "prove" that they're a real religion. Makes me sick as an American who sees paying his taxes as a patriotic duty.

This should have been done years ago. Also, they should ban the federal government from editing it's own biographies, as well as banning notables from editing their own profiles. I don't wanna read someone's self-serving biography they wrote for themselves, I wanna see the truth.

Wikipedia is a great idea, and can be a great informational tool, but I think they should move to a system where they at least verify the editors of their content.

I hope all of you kicking Scientology realize they are not that different than the rest of the delusion religious groups in this country. And I hope you speak out against them also.

The idea of spirituality does have a purpose and can server a positive influence as long as the people practicing it remember it is just a idea or art form and not "THE TRUTH." This is why some Buddhist say Kill the Buddha if you see him.

Speak out for reason and equality, not self-serving imagination games and exclusivity.

Avoid membership in religious groups.

while i agree, scientology is the worst imo. other religious organization don't sue anyone and everyone who crticizes them or gets in the way of their money-making, brain-washing ways nor deem those who critize it as "fair game" and seek to destory their lives through slander, intimidation, and harassment.

nor do they deem people "SP's" and break up families.

scientology is not a religion, it's a cult.

Thank you. While some churches go overboard and I'm thinking excommunication, they don't get downright crazy and they don't try to scare you into complying with them with blackmail material.

At worst, some churches make their congregations feel "guilty" if they don't tithe and some will threaten certain members with excommunication but I really don't think excommunication is the threat is used to be when the Catholic church was the only game in town.

you are clearly ignorant of scientology or the nature of criticism against scientology. beliefs aside, the organizational practices of scientology are very damaging and fraudulent in ways that your local church/synagogue/etc.. typically are not. whether something is a cult is determined not by beliefs (with the exception of belief in an infallible leader who must be obeyed) but by whether the groups structure, tactics, and behavior are coercive to members. scientology fits the bill.

The defining difference between Scientology and the vast majority of religious groups is the issue of control. Most other groups not only allow controversy, but actually make adjustments based on which arguments within the group have been validated. In addition, if there is some irreparable disagreement, those who disagree are free to leave the group.

Neither of these obtain in Scientology, and the methods by which the leadership maintains control are comparable to the way the Mafia maintains control. The evidence is incontrovertible that this is an organization devoted to scam. It does not fit under the rubric of "religion" by any definition.

your despcription of if you see a buddha in the road kill him is part of an idea or art form is incorrect, it is for a practioner of buddhism to understand the awakened (the buddha) is not outside of you but within you. everyone has buddha nature inside them...even us lazy buddhists..
your argument would aptly be more in line with relgion than spirituality. but even this has its place.

The decline in American devotion to God can be directly attributed to the extensive reading of so-called "science" fiction by our young people, a poisonous rot about creatures not of God's making, alien societies without a good Christian among them, and rawsex between unhuman beings with three heads.

It's a bit outdated, but if you Google, in decades long past part of right-wing Christian paranoia included reading "futurist" stories in school, which were supposed to be deliberately corrupting the imaginations of children and making them afraid and confused. At the top of the hit list was none other than Ray Bradbury, whose Fahrenheit 451 was blamed for a school shooting. Many even tried to ban Frank Baum's Oz novels

It's the fault of fiction writers! Burn the books! Burn them all! The Christisn God is too weak to stand up to the forces of fiction!

This happens on every Wiki article that is controversial. Try adding something to the Foie Gras article that mentions cruelty of force feeding or unhappy ducks. The food industry actually has lawyers overseeing articles of interest and keeping truths that would hurt the industry from seeing the pages of Wikipedia.

Wikipedia is an internet battleground for interest groups, it is not the place to go for unfiltered truth, for the most part. Highly valuable internet real estate for free? You BET there are coordinated groups working hard to keep their edits front and center.
