U.S. Rep. John Sullivan, of Oklahoma, checked himself into the Betty Ford Center in California on Thursday night for treatment for alcohol addiction, according to a written statement from his office.

Hopefully he has taken the first step in taking control of his addiction. Best wishes sir.
I wish him and his family well but I am wondering if he regrets or would like to take
back any votes he made while under the influence of alcohol?
So does this mean republicans believe in treatment for addicts and decriminalization?
No, it just means they get to go to glamorous clinics while the poor will just
have to live with,or die from, their addictions.
Alcoholism is a terrible illness, the suffering it causes hurts more than the victim!
Tough times ahead for the rest of his life, good luck to him!

I respect Sullivan's candor and wish him nothing but success with his recovery.
But it shouldn't be overlooked that he chose to be in the public eye and was sent to DC to represent the people of Oklahoma. His request for privacy, after having abused his constituents' trust, seems a bit misplaced.

Will he be paying for these clinic visits... using his own money or taxpayer's money?
Someone needs to investigate this. If he was a poor man with no health care benefits, how would be getting to fix this problem?
These people are abusing the system and nobody investigates how they get their fix.
His job is as a member of Congress. He has government health care as do all other Congressmen. It is paid for by the public as are their salaries.
If he was a poor man, hopefully he'd go to a free clinic to seek rehab.
Don't begrudge anyone trying to deal with this disease. Alcholism is a disease.

Most people who have medical insurance can get in-patient substance abuse treatment. As a member of congress, he has a pretty good health insurance plan.
But your point that such treatment should be available to all is valid.
A very brave step especially for someone in his position which could be signing a political death sentence.

Does anyone else notice that this story broke on a weekend, "take out the trash" day (okay, that's Friday,but close enough)?
I wonder what other shoe is going to drop soon. Pardon my cynicism...I hope it truly is just because he hit bottom and completed the first step and not because of some circumstance that his influential position is allowing him to keep under wraps that the normal citizen would have been plastered all over the news.
