Egyptian Cuts Off His Own Penis After He Was Refused Permission To Marry Girl From Lower-Class Family

CAIRO — A 25-year-old Egyptian man cut off his own penis to spite his family after he was refused permission to marry a girl from a lower class family, police reported Sunday.

After unsuccessfully petitioning his father for two years to marry the girl, the man heated up a knife and sliced off his reproductive organ, said a police official.

The young man came from a prominent family in the southern Egyptian province of Qena, one of Egypt's poorest and most conservative areas that is also home to the famed ancient Egyptian ruins of Luxor.

The man was rushed to the hospital but doctors were unable to reattach the severed member, the official added citing the police report filed after the incident.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with the press, added that the man was still recovering in the hospital.

Traditionally, marriages in these conservative part of southern Egypt are between similar social classes and often within the same extended families _ and are rarely for love.

I think this is the mentality that controlled "marriage between a man and a woman" for the last 4,850 years or so. It also was the type of mentality that controlled many societies. This is what has been fought against by those who understand social freedom and equality. This is what the toad brains hold up as justification against same sex marriage. It exists in every society: ignorance, self-righteousness, intolerance, no respect for individual rights, religious prejudice...male dominance. Do not laugh at me this is the mentality that formed societies' main framework. It took education and the fight against oppression to knock it down piece by piece. It is what subjugated minorities without brute power to silence. It's the living Bible in action. It's not just restricted to this town in Egypt it's alive in the US. Mormons, Evangelicals, Extreme right, Conservatives, Red Necks anyone who believes they have the right to deny anyone their total freedom is still operating with a mindset that goes back thousands of years. Yes even that darling of the beauty contest set, Carrie Prejean thinks it's okay to crush another individual's right to freedom just because she thinks so. Oh yeah and because a very old book that was written in another time when fathers told their sons who they could marry was the rule.

Well ... if he's the only son, then he's deprived his father of grandchildren and the line of his name dies. As sick as it seems to us, in that culture his father may feel disgraced. But that's quite a severe remedy for revenge.
