Oklahoma's Tulsa World newspaper reports on a bizarre scuffle this past week after a highway patrol officer pulled over an ambulance that was carrying a patient headed for the hospital, but didn't have its siren on.

The patrolman apparently intended to issue a 'failure to yeild' citation to the ambulance driver, and was angered when he believed one of the paramedics gave him a middle finger.

Despite being told that the woman in the ambulance needed to get to the hospital, the trooper insisted that one of the paramedics be detained in his car. When he tried to handcuff a paramedic, a fight ensued, which was filmed by the husband of the patient.

Eventually the patrolman allowed the ambulance to go to the hospital. An investigation over the incident "has been turned over to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol's Internal Affairs Unit and a county prosecutor," the Tulsa World reports.

I remember seeing this on another post a few days ago, I hope this gains traction nationally. For people who claim that racism is dead, this is a glaring example of the opposite..

Hardly a shock- most midwestern white cops see ALL African Americans as criminals.

Tulsa, Oklahoma has a VERY, VERY dark history in racism, but I'm not convinced this is whole story. I was once stopped by OHP for having an out of date tag and you would've thought the car was stolen the way they screamed at me through both windows (btw: I'm white, female & 120lbs). And a few years ago, they played target practice w/ my friends show dogs instead of calling animal control.

This is the south, and it's rooted deeply in the "bring it on" attitude and trying to prove they're tougher than anyone else. Let's not forget, this is the state the worships Toby Keith and Chuck Norris.

The obvious reasons aside, the priority should have been the patient. If the officer didn't think the ambulance was following correct protocol, he should have gave them a ticket at the hospital. The state would be getting ready to cough up some HUGH bucks if the person being transported had a life-threatening condition and died while the troopers were playing deputy dog.

I use to think that cellphones with cameras were a waste of time. Now I see that it could save someone's life from a policeman. I'm going to have to get me a camera on my cellphone. This is not just Oklahoma. I know that the majority of policemen are, by and at-large, only serving to uphold the law. However, there are too many (one is too many) that allows things to happen and they don't do anything about it. These guys have fellow policemen working along-side them and they know who are just about off the rocker. No reporting incidents, just as what happened in Birmingham, is just as bad.

Wow. I hope the old Sonics are having a great time in Oklahoma...up here in Seattle, the the cops only harrass peaceful protesters and let people be murdered during Mardi Gras celebrations.

Cops and steroids...not a good mix, but something that is on the rise.

They said that the patrolman had a woman in his car when he stopped the ambulance. Who was the woman in the patrol car?

Ok,

I am a usual defender of cops. I agree this is totally ridiculous and the officers involved should be suspended at best fired at worst.

But, this is what I want to really say....

What right do any of you have to judge any state, region, or location arbitrarily?
Discrim inatory behavior exists everywhere. To belittle one region of the country because of a few peoples actions is in and of itself discri minatory. It borders on class icism. You might possibly live in a wealthier region of the country, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist there.

Instead of being r a cially biased many of you are class icist. Which raises a question some of you should really examine...

How heinous this is! And what about the patient in the ambulance?! What were those troopers thinking? Beyond belief.

here's the sad thing about this and many other incidents. A lot of black and white people in here, while showing sympathy, are ignoring the larger issue. They are acting like this bad behavior , and world view, exhibited by the cops is only limited to them--the "angry white male on steroids"--it's not. The real and deeper problem is a general hostility/lack of respect/criminialized view of black people. A lot of white folks in general share these feelings toward black people. It manifests itself in our every day lives in everything we do as humans. It affects, the way we talk to one another, the way we approach each other, how we interact...certainly how we treat each other. Its easy for the cops to act like this, if they assume black people are criminals--who just don't know it yet--and they have to be the one's to probe this issue. Once you criminalize/demonize a people it's easy to assume that they are up to no good. This assumed -criminalized notion applied to blacks becomes pervasive and is transferred to blacks & people of color. As was in the case of Sean Bell--where white/non-white officers pumped 50 bullets into the young man on his wedding day--he had no weapons/ or drugs on him. They probably thought he was up to no good. Can someone again tell me, why the young man died?
