PARIS — Serena Williams was sure the ball went off her opponent's arm, a no-no in tennis. The opponent, Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, insisted the ball went off her racket. Williams accused Martinez Sanchez of "cheating." Martinez Sanchez thought that was a "stupid" thing for Williams to say.

Then consider that the point in question helped Martinez Sanchez win the first set of their French Open match Saturday. Oh, and that Williams had a coughing fit during a third-set changeover. All in all, what eventually became a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory for Williams stands as the latest example of the athlete/actress' penchant for theatrics.

"I'm, like, drama. And I don't want to be drama," a hoarse Williams said, straining to get the words out. "I'm like one of those girls on a reality show that has all the drama, and everyone in the house hates them because no matter what they do, like, drama follows them. I don't want to be that girl."

Perhaps. But the 2002 French Open champion, who dabbles in acting, sure seems to find herself in the middle of unique on-court situations.

Even Williams made passing reference Saturday to two episodes by naming the opponents, if not mentioning the details: a 2003 French Open semifinal loss marked by Justine Henin's gamesmanship and Williams' postmatch tears, and a 2004 U.S. Open quarterfinal loss to Jennifer Capriati that contained enough questionable officiating to prompt the introduction of replay reviews in the sport.

Here's what happened in Saturday's third-round match:

At 2-2 in the first set, Williams double-faulted to give a break point to Martinez Sanchez, a Spaniard who is ranked 43rd and never has reached the fourth round at a major. On the next point, Martinez Sanchez raced to the net behind a drop shot that brought Williams forward, too. Williams ran up and smacked a backhand right at Martinez Sanchez.

In what seemed to be an effort to protect herself, as much as to try to hit a volley, the left-handed Martinez Sanchez raised her racket, quick as could be. The ball ricocheted back _ off her racket? off her arm? off both? _ and past Williams. The point was awarded to Martinez Sanchez, giving her the game.

Story continues below

NBC, which televised the match, showed The Associated Press replays in which the ball appears to glance first off Martinez Sanchez's right forearm, then off her racket, before going over the net. Tennis rules say if a ball touches a player, the point is lost.

As the women headed to the ensuing changeover, Williams tried to say something to Martinez Sanchez, who kept walking. Then Williams spoke to the chair umpire, Emmanuel Joseph, saying, "I felt so bad. I didn't mean to hit her."

Repeatedly pointing to her own forearm, Williams told Joseph, "I don't know why you gave her the game. That's totally not cool."

"She better not come to the net again," Williams said.

At her postmatch news conference, Williams was asked whether she thought the ball touched Martinez Sanchez.

"I didn't 'think' the ball touched her _ the ball did touch her, 100 percent, on her arm. The rules of tennis is when the ball hits your body, then it's out of play. You lose a point automatically," Williams said. "So the ball hit her body, and therefore, she should have lost the point _ instead of cheating."

Could Martinez Sanchez have been unsure whether the ball made contact with her arm?

"I hit that ball rather hard," Williams said. "She knew that ball hit her."

A moment later, rolling her eyes, Williams added: "It was like, 'No way.' I would never do that. I've never done that. I've never sunk low."

When Williams' comments were relayed, Martinez Sanchez said: "I don't like to comment about this. It's a stupid comment."

Asked in both English and Spanish whether the ball hit her, she repeatedly said it went off her racket.

As for Williams' health, the 10-time Grand Slam singles champion said she's been fighting a cold.

"I thought," Williams said, "I was going to cough up a lung or something."

Talk about drama.

"Cheat" is a strong word for this situation.

However, if the ball did touch Martinez, goos sportsmanship dictates she should have said something to the judge.

It's akin to a golfer signing off on their scorecard if their caddy has made a mistake.

What word would you have used for the situation then? hmm?

You can cheat by omission, by failing to tell the truth. No worries, Justice was Served; the Cheater lost the match. which shows , she didn't have confidence in her ability to win fairly!

While Serena had every right to argue her point (it looks like she was right on), for her to say that she doesn't like drama rings pretty hollow. After Henin beat her in the French, she blamed her own errors and said Henin made "a lot of lucky shots." When she lost to Henin at the Australian Open, she blamed injuries and said if she'd been healthy, she absolutely would have won.

If you listen to her comments after a loss, she frequently comes across like a bad sport. Not a lot of grace in defeat. She seldom praises her opponents.

Serena is an amazing player, but I wish she would at least acknowledge the abilities of her opponents once in awhile.

I agree 100%! Serena actually looks very fake and shallow minded many times in interviews and on the court. With as much success as she and her sister has had, you would think she would handle herself like her big sister, in that she maintains an overall positive spotlight. There's clearly some pyschological issues with her that 'after-tennis' she will have a rough time at life. 'Keep'n-it-real RiggsM.D. K.C,Mo.

The girl tried CHEATED and Serena had the right to call her out on it! End of Thread.

It is what it is...... cheating!! Serena called it! I watched the match and Serena wacked the heck out of that ball right on Sanchez's right forearm. Sanchez turned around and tried to touch the arm unnoticed and it didn't work. I noticed it. She is a freakin CHEATER! Trust and believe she is bruised on that arm and her spirit!

Peace!

Serena, I love you and hope you win the French open. Try to overlook the cheaters and airheaded referees and just concentrate on going for the gold. Best of luck (but you don't actually need any luck, because you're the best).

Excellence (such as that viewed in the Williams sisters) is difficult for many to digest because first they would have to suspend their other isms before recognizing their athletic greatness. While others wait for them to catch up, I will simply continue to enjoy their prowess on the court --domestically and internationally. Go Serena!

Cheating may not had been a nice way to put it, but that is why there are referees in the game. The ref made a bad call, happens in many professional sports. Mistakenly or not, Serena seemed to give her response to a question as best as it could be described, because at any given moment, her opponent could has said something. But how professional would that had been? The nature of competition will prevent a person from saying, "Please award the point to my opponent, it touched my arm before I hit it." So, really I don't put anything against Martinez either. It is competitive sport, that requires referees who can make a good judgement call based on the rules of play.

" The nature of competition will prevent a person from saying, 'Please award the point to my opponent, it touched my arm before I hit it.' "

By your statement above is obviously clear that you do not play the sport of Tennis.

kboard is right.

Tennis is a gentile sport that has at his hallmark a sense of fair play and sports(wo)manship.

It is totally within reason that Martinez should've had the chair judge awarded the point to Serena. It has been done before

If you would like to see an example of good sportsmanship, please watch Roger Federer. I have also seen Andy Roddick overrule a call or two. Some people just play the game at the highest level from every aspect of the game.

I saw the video and Serena didn't "accuse" her of cheating she CAUGHT her. The ball undoubtedly hit her arm.

I really love that picture of Serena. One can easily try to imagine the power of Serena's body but imagination fails to grasp or to be grasped by the full power of those thighs.

My god. I'd pay a small fortune to feel them wrapped around me.

Excuse me, Mr Hendicks, but ESPN showed that clip in ultra-slow motion, from 5 different angles...the ball DID hit Martinez' arm. Talk about shoddy journalism.

Exactly, the point of this story is whether the ball touched her opponent's arm---nothing else.

If in fact, the ball did as it showed, then the rest of the article is more about the drama that this correspondent is engaging, rather than the drama he is trying to project upon Serena.

It really ain't about the ball hitting the forearm as it is more about the author's disdain for Serena. I mean, let's be honest. We know the drill.

I saw the tape, the ball hit her arm, then her racqet.

She won the point and the set, but Serena won the match and is in the quarterfinals, where I hope she can go all the way to the title.

Now that we know it wasn't just an accussation, the headline should be changed to something like "Serena Catches Martinez Cheating," imo.
